Post by Virus- »

Hello I have a strange problem with my laptop, 1 boot out of 3 +- the sound will crash at start up, there will be no sound, no volume. When the problem occurs, It takes 3 4 minutes to boot and the same time to shut down. During shut down sequence I get the following error:

Is there anything I can do to stabilize the computer?

Thanks.

I recommend you upgrade your kernel. A 10th-gen Intel CPU should be using something newer than the 5.4 kernel.

Instructions for upgrading to the 5.15 kernel:
  • Open Update Manager.
  • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
  • Make sure 5.15 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
  • Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

Hello I am having some problems with my laptop, same thing as the original question. Previously my tass was to update the Kernel and the computer which I did, but it didn't work.

The problem is caused by using HDMI, I want to connect my laptop to the TV in order to watch videos on the TV. Each time I connect my TV on the laptop, it works for the sound and video in HD resolution but when I disconnect from the laptop and reboot, the OS is damaged, it takes 5 minutes to boot and the sound demon is crashing at start up, shutting down takes another 5 minutes (or more) and often a reboot won't repair the OS, the only solution is to install a fresh clone.. not very convenient.

I don't know what to do, maybe there is a procedure to connect and disconnect HDMI... I need to set the sound to HDMI out then I need to set the display to get dual screens basically, I tried a couple of procedure to correctly disconnect the cable but nothing seems to work without damaging the OS.

I want to subscribe to Gaia streaming services but the computer needs to be stable before..

If you guys can help me.

Thanks

I am not familiar with removing a cable causing damage to the operating system. That is quite unusual and makes me wonder if there is some other problem, possibly already on your clone.

Can you please run the inxi output with the TV attached? The data you posted does not show HDMI audio values.

Also, with the TV attached, please provide the output of aplay -l

HEre is the requested info,

-Computer booted and running.
-Plugging in HDMI while Amplifier and TV are already ON, I am getting the second screen directly by hot plugging HDMI.
-Switching sound to HDMI built in audio manually.
-Everything works fine.

The current clone is stable, it'e the first time I connect the HDMI in the computer. I don't have the problems at start up and shutdown, the problems should start in 2 or 3 days.

Where is the amplifier in this setup? Is the TV connected to the amplifier and the amplifier is connected to the computer?

Or is the TV directly connected to the computer and the amplifier is only connected to the TV?

The problems don't happen for several days? Does that mean you can disconnect and reconnect the HDMI cable with no problem during that time?

@smg

The HDMI from computer to the amplifier that is managing all the HDMIs (Blu Ray and DVR and "game" line in for the computer). Then there is another HDMI from the amplifier to the TV.

I can connect and disconnect the HDMI from the computer without problems, But I should start having problems in 2 or 3 days with the sound daemon it's always the same pattern.

I tried to disconnect the HDMI today with this procedure:

A. Toggling off the amplifier and the TV.
B. Manually setting the audio back to "Speakers built in audio" in Linux mint.
C. Disconnecting HDMI. (Will flicker the laptop screen even if the amplifier is switched off)
D. Rebooting twice with no problems.

Now waiting to see.

Having the amplifier as an extra piece of hardware means there is an additional variable in the system which might be a factor.

I don't have any guesses at the present time why timing would be a factor in whether or not it works.

SOLVED

Conclusion, my laptop is stable with the following procedure to connect and disconnect the HDMI.

CONNECTING LAPTOP TO TV
1. Turning off the TV + Amplifier
2. Connecting HDMI cable into laptop.
3. Opening the TV and amplifier.
4. Setting amplifier to the right line in.
5. Setting sound to HDMI on the laptop sound settings
4. Streaming on the television.

DISCONNECTING THE LAPTOP FROM THE TV.
1. Leaving the laptop ON
2. Turning off the TV and amplifier.
3. Setting the sound back to laptop speakers. <-- This is the critical part
4. Disconnecting the HDMI while laptop is still ON.
5. Shutting down the laptop.
6. Rebooting.

Looks pretty stable like this.
