[SOLVED] Boot stops after successful install with error message: nouveau trapped read at [...] 02 [PAGE_NOT_PRESENT]

Post by tkalvin »

I installed Linux Mint from a bootable USB following the official guide (https://linuxmint-installation-guide.re ... en/latest/). When I booted the USB media and selected the basic Linux Mint installer to boot, I got something like this message:

[367.631806] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: fb: trapped read at 01004ca000 on channel -1 [1fea0000 unkown] engine 06 [BAR] client 08 [PFIFO_READ] subclient 01 [IN] reason 00000002 [PAGE_NOT_PRESENT]

So I tried launching the installer in compatibility mode, and it worked correctly, I could install the OS without problems. However, after successful installation and removing the installer media, I got the same problem. After the Linux Mint logo appeared, and the cursor started blinking (during the boot process I guess), it printed pretty much the same error message I copied above.

Can someone help me with this, how could I achieve that the OS boot correctly? I found this question (https://askubuntu.com/questions/1262169 ... 00-on-chan) on AskUbuntu with a similar error message, but I don't really know what to do with it, because I don't run a command that I can change, or do I?

(PS.: I also posted a question on Unix & Linux StackExchange site about this topic, hoping it will reach more people this way.)

Hello and welcome to the forum.

What kind of computer are you using?
Boot up the bootable USB you used to install LM and type this in a terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxmprz
Post the output to this forum in "Code" tags. The button that inserts these tags is marked </>, which is in the mini toolbar above the edit box where you type your reply.
viewtopic.php?f=42&t=364929

Are you dual booting alongside windows?

Perhaps you should use the "edge" version of LM.

Thank you for the quick reply, unfortunately, I didn't get an email about it, I thought I will get one when my topic is updated, I guess I should've set up some notification. I went into the settings, but I couldn't find an option to set this, maybe someone could help me with it too? -- I found one while I was writing this, after the text field there is an 'options' menu but is there a way to change the default to notify me? Anyways, to answer your questions:
What kind of computer are you using?
This is a desktop computer that I built from different pieces I had at home. This is quite old, ca. 10 years average for all of the parts. I think the rest you will get to know from the command output you sent me.

The output of the command 'inxi -Fxxxmprz':

Are you dual booting alongside windows?
No. Linux Mint was installed on a completely blank SSD.
Perhaps you should use the "edge" version of LM.
What does it mean? How could I use it? Does it limit some features such as internet access, installing programs, games performance, or anything?

I hope I provided the information you asked for.

Looking forward to your (or anyone's) reply on how can I set up the PC so that it boots up Linux Mint.

It's your ancient Geforce card. Read the entire thread posted below. You might be able to install the deprecated Nvidia 340 driver for your card (but it might break your Mint 21 because of kernel issues). You might try installing Mint 20.x, which uses the 5.4 kernel, which Nvidia supports, and the Nvidia 340 driver should be in the Driver Manager. Mint 20 goes end-of-life in 2025. I'm surprised the nouveau driver doesn't work, but it's a known that there are some gpu's that don't like it.

Or, you could try a not-ubuntu distribution, maybe MX linux, which uses init by default, instead of systemd, and shares much of it's base with Anti-X linux, which is designed to work with really old and out-of-date computers. Or an arch-based distribution, which has an aur version of the 340 driver available with a new kernel.

I roughly read through the topic you linked. As I interpret, it is about someone wants to install Nvidia driver on a working LM system. My problem is that it can't even boot.

Is there a way to install the driver somehow outside the OS for example from the installer? Or is it possible to change installer so that it installs the driver?

If I'm wrong above, then could you please help me, how can I install the driver according to the posts you linked?

Sorry, I'm just a beginner with Linux who is now trying to change from Windows. And because of that, I would like to stick to one Linux distro so that maybe I could learn it better, and with this distro I already have some little experience.

The bottom line is you might not be able to fix this with an ubuntu-based distribution that uses a kernel newer than 5.8. The link I gave you stated plainly that support for the older driver (Nvidia 340) was dropped by Nvidia for newer kernels. And your nouveau driver, which is the kernel driver for all Nvidia gpus, appears to be either broken or simply not working with your particular card.

Compatibility mode is the very basic VESA driver. You may be able to get to a working desktop by booting with 'nomodeset', which is that driver.

To test it, if the grub menu is hidden, spam the ESC key from power-on (if you are booting EFI, for legacy boot spam the SHIFT key). That should bring up the GRUB menu, with the first entry highlighted.

At that point, type e (for edit). This will open a text window.

Arrow down to the line that begins with linux, and append nomodeset to the end of the line, keeping a space between the last entry and your nomodeset

Hit the F10 key to continue booting. This will change the driver to VESA for only a single boot cycle. It will revert on the next boot.

If you get to a working Mint desktop, the oldest Nvidia driver available in the Driver Manager is 390, I think, so that won't be an option. Your other choice is to use the ppa in the link (which could break your system), or to set the nomodeset permanently in your /etc/default/grub.

Frankly, if I was you, I would install Mint 20.3 because its default kernel is 5.4, and that should work with the 340 driver and even have it in the Driver Manager, though I can't swear to the latter. Mint 20.x is supported into 2025.

I tried editing the command line, but it didn't work. But I guess never mind because I installed the edition you suggested (Linux Mint 20.3) and it works well now!

So thank both of you for your time and help! :D

There's a github file that might solve your problem and allow ver 340 of the Nvidia driver to work with a newer kernel, but I really don't think it's worth the hassle considering that you have a working system that is supported for 2 more years, and I'm glad to have been of help.
