[Solved] Cursor keeps jumping to bottom left screen.
Hi. This is my first post ever as a Mint user of 3 years now. I have to say I love it. But..
I'm using an HP All in one desktop, with a wireless mouse. In just about every PC session, the mouse pointer is OK for an irregular period, then starts to jump by itself to the panel at bottom left of the screen. Sometimes it will even start up programmes from icons down there (e.g. Terminal, Libre Office, Software Manager) without me even touching the mouse. Sometimes "ESC" will bring it back, but only for a short time.
I've searched everywhere for answers, and find that it is making computer use almost impossible.
I've tried updating, disabling the Touchpad in Preferences (not that my PC has one), trying 2 other mice (corded and wireless), restarting the PC (works for a little while), all without fixing the problem. My system printout is like this (is it enough?):
System:
Kernel: 5.15.0-67-generic x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 11.3.0
Desktop: Cinnamon 5.6.7 tk: GTK 3.24.33 wm: muffin vt: 7 dm: LightDM 1.30.0
Distro: Linux Mint 21.1 Vera base: Ubuntu 22.04 jammy
Machine:
Type: Desktop System: HP product: HP Pavilion All-in-One 24-r0xx
I'm pretty low on the Linux technical food chain, and don't understand much of the more complicated stuff, But I'd love to get this sorted.

Please open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click the Copy button in the lower right and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware.
You mention you adjusted Touchpad settings. Did you adjust any Mouse settings?

Re: Cursor keeps jumping to bottom left screen.
Thank you for answering my query. The only mouse adjustments were to increase the pointer size, and turn on the "Ctrl locates pointer" toggle. The system report is added. Also I'm wondering if there might be a driver conflict between the drivers for HP wireless keyboard and Mouse (a separate dongle for each)?

Re: Cursor keeps jumping to bottom left screen.
I tried that for the first time today.
Is one wireless and the other bluetooth? If you have a wired options available, you could check that theory.
Are you using fractional scaling? Sometimes that causes odd issues. The default is for it to be on and you can disable it (for a test) in the Display app.
I suggest doing a bit of cleaning on your computer's root partition. Ideally, you want to be no more than 2/3-3/4 full. You are currently over that which can sometimes affect graphics performance.

Re: Cursor keeps jumping to bottom left screen.
Thanks SMG,I think the problem has been resolved. I'm holding my breath though. I checked fractional scaling and that was off. So I connected up wired keyboard and mouse, and that seemed to fix it. The problem mouse and keyboard are both WiFi, but had a separate USB dongle each. I think there must have been a conflict there somewhere. Hope it stays fixed.
Thanks for your advice re overstuffed boot drive: I hadn't noticed it creeping up, and didnt know about the performance consequences. I have pruned it back to 58% from 87% and I think the gaming graphics are better.
It's a privilege to be part of the Linux community, with all the people who are so willing to help out. Thanks again.

Re: Cursor keeps jumping to bottom left screen.
It Hasnt Stopped!
Within minutes of my last post, its back to the old problem. Cursor jumps to bottom left and sometimes opens programmes without any input from me.
So.... the wired mouse and keyboard go back on, and we'll see if that does it.

Re: Cursor keeps jumping to bottom left screen.
They probably are. That much of a change would make a difference.
Is this screen a touch screen?

Re: Cursor keeps jumping to bottom left screen.
Do you have an option in BIOS/UEFI to disable the touchscreen? If so, give that a try. There may be some type of interference happening.

Re: Cursor keeps jumping to bottom left screen.
I'll try the BIOS. Meantime, listing my system inputs comes up with this:
(apologies if I havent pasted it in correctly). I have only the Logitech wireless mouse and keyboard in use. I'm seeing other pointers listed and another keyboard. This looks wrong but maybe it isn't? Maybe past (replaced) hardware?

Re: Cursor keeps jumping to bottom left screen.
No, it looks okay. It shows your Logitech Wireless Mouse, Logitech Wireless Keyboard, and the Touchscreen (Weida Hi-Tech CoolTouchR System).
The virtual XTEST ones and the AT Translated Set 2 keyboard show up for most people.
If there is no setting in the BIOS/UEFI to disable the touchscreen, we can give it a command to turn it off for the current login cycle as a test.

Re: Cursor keeps jumping to bottom left screen.
I've just had a look in BIOS settings and there seems to be no way to disable Touchscreen.
Re: Cursor keeps jumping to bottom left screen.
Code: Select all
⎜ ↳ Weida Hi-Tech CoolTouchR System id=10 [slave pointer (2)]
If is is still 10, open a terminal and type:
Code: Select all
xinput disable 10
Let's see if that makes a difference with this issue.
A woman typing on a laptop with LM20.3 Cinnamon.
Re: Cursor keeps jumping to bottom left screen.
Thanks. Ive just checked and id is still 10. I'll disable it as per your instruction (and for each boot cycle) to see what happens. May be a few days before I get back.
Re: Cursor keeps jumping to bottom left screen.
Thanks SMG. I think disabling the touchscreen has fixed the problem. I've been using this method for a few days now and the erratic pointer has largely disappeared. You can probably anticipate my next question - how can I permanently disable the touchscreen?
Re: Cursor keeps jumping to bottom left screen.
Let's see if the following disables the touchscreen. If it does, then we will not have to worry about the input value changing and you can either add this as a start-up application or add the line to your .login file.
Code: Select all
xinput --set-prop "Weida Hi-Tech CoolTouchR System" "Device Enabled" 0

Re: Cursor keeps jumping to bottom left screen.
Another thing that causes cursor jump is the trackpad. I have mine set to turn off while typing. Just turning it off completely might be fine too.

Re: Cursor keeps jumping to bottom left screen.
I removed all the extra spaces. Maybe they are needed. Try this:
Code: Select all
xinput --set-prop "Weida Hi-Tech CoolTouchR System" "Device Enabled" 0
- You can click "SELECT ALL" to the right of CODE: in order to select everything.
- Then do Control-C (hold the Control key and, while holding it, press the C key) to copy what you selected.
- Then in the terminal window select Edit > Paste.
Code: Select all
xinput --set-prop "Weida Hi-Tech" "Device Enabled" 0

Thank you so much for your patience. Yes I'm familiar with selecting and pasting. I've tried both of your suggestions:
