Constant high CPU in 21.1 MATE

Post by michalis »

Hello,

I have recently upgraded from 20.3, to 21 and then to 21.1.
All went normal and all personal data kept intact.
Immediately after the upgrade I noticed a CPU fan spinning and a temperature increase by an average of 10°C.
When anything is done (especially with any browser) CPU spins up, temp increases by 15°C, then it goes back to the "normal" of +10°C.
E.g. you click on a page, launch the Thunderbird or whatever app, or open a document again a spark and then to "normal" +10°C.
Even when simple cron rsync job runs, e.g. sends updated files to the backup NAS, I notice it!!!!! (before the upgrade never)
Even typing in the command line, I have a delay!!!!

The weird is, that the Desktop is way faster than before!!!

I dig around the net and applied the following:
  • Removed PPA and additional repositories.
Checked if software rendering is taking over
    Set a value in GRUB.
Used one of the new themes
    Updated python3
Removed Bluetooth (I do not use it)
Certainly is NOT an outdated system or CPU, as right before the upgrade, the PC was excellent
I believe that it is a combination of the used kernel and some graphical properties of the system.
Keep in mind that this is my work PC, so there is no room for fresh installations etc.

Here are some outputs you might require:

Re: Constant high CPU in 21.1 MATE

I am still investigating the issue, as I would like to avoid fresh installation.
I believe that it has to do with the combination of Xorg, Nvidia drivers and probably the kernel.

Added this line to /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

Code: Select all

Option "UseEvents" "on"
and downgraded to Nvidia 510 (while in 20.3 I had the 390).
The above saved about 4 degrees of temperature and reduced a lot the lagging while typing in the command line.

BTW: I totally removed flatpak, because excluding the fact that wanted to download hundreds of MB, it installed its own Nvidia driver (!), as well tons of gnome related packages, which I believe they should have caused an increased CPU allocation due to its sandboxing.

While investigating I discovered that

Code: Select all

sendmail
had a huge queue of mails from root, toward my email provider, which they were not able to be delivered. I do not remember if I had configured in the past to do some test, but every time it attempted to send the emails, CPU sparked.
So bye bye sendmail.
Obviously that was present also before, but CPU was not susceptible and passed unnoticed!

Still under investigation, with the most important is to avoid the CPU spark, every time I open a new TAB in Firefox!
