Gentoo live ISO

Post by t42 »

Today I downloaded Gentoo live ISO which features KDE Plasma 5.26 desktop, it was a weekly 4.0 GB snapshot livegui-amd64-20230312T164650Z.iso taken from https://www.gentoo.org/downloads/, The live desktop turned out to be responsive and snappy. Installed software allows to use it as a rescue media or as a full-featured live OS : kernel 6.1, Firefox, Chromium, Falkon, Ktorrent, LibreOffice, VLC, Kdenlive, KDE Connect, Inkscape, GIMP, Kate, Gwenview, Gparted, photorec, testdisk, cryptsetup, Clang, GCC, meson, Java. Note that Gentoo runs on the SysV with OpenRC.

My jaunt into Gentoo was Sabayon Linux, which is now sadly discontinued.

Yes Sabayon did system installation and configuration considerably easier. Anyway these days Gentoo stance with these live CDs is different, if you are fine with KDE you have nicely configured live system immediately. I was working several hours on it until all I need was already installed and recent. I'll keep this USB drive for Kate alone, saves me from installing more than sixty KDE libraries in my system for one editor.

Too late for Gentoo. Too late.
I remember the hype around Gentoo back when it came out. Stiff necks were all about Gentoo this n Gentoo that.
It gave Slackware -previously the top distro for the snobbish Linux enthusiast - a run for its money. We were such peasants with our "precompiled binaries".

These days I believe Calculate tries to fill the gap left by Sabayon.

"pre-compiled binaries" is what brought me into Debian, Ubuntu, Mint.
Debian comes with over 59000 packages (precompiled software that is bundled up in a nice format for easy installation on your machine), a package manager (APT), and other utilities that make it possible to manage thousands of packages on thousands of computers as easily as installing a single application. All of it free.
