[SOLVED] - TimeShift does not complete

Post by guille_pm »

I have searched the forums and web trying to find a solution, but nothing has worked so far...
I'm trying to create a snapshot using TimeShift, but it doesn't seem to be doing much.

Here are my specs

The terminal stays there, I even left it for 10 hours, but it didn't move.
It seems like TimeShift is estimating an initial snapshot of 140 TB, although I'm running on a much smaller partition.

What do you think could be the problem?

Thanks in advance!!!

If you have included /home, don't.
Do you have any partitions on other drives (or network shares) mounted outside /mnt or /media?
Have you messed around with the filters in settings?
140TB - not surprised it is still going after 10 hours.

I would never had believed, that a private user would own a 3 digit value of TB drives, even with external drives. Something is unbelievable.

Seriously: A drives sizes in the system (inclusive not used parts) are far less than 2 TB. So something must confuse Timeshift and out of this reason TS does something wrong.

if you check properties for /proc you find out the exact value is 140.7 TB i'm sure on your system also.
something happened when OP included which folders to backup and need to check what's selected

Yup, you're right, /proc properties says that there are 468.592 items totalling 140,7 TB. I understand now that I could filter this directory out of my Timeshift snapshot.
It's weird though that Timeshift has been working well so far, and I have not done any changes to filters.
Anyway, I'll give it a try and see how it goes.

in your case if you haven't changed any settings more than likely your drive is FULL with automated snapshots. how large is your timeshift folder?

I gave it another try, but the same thing is happening.
Before doing it, I actually deleted all existing snapshots, deleted all logs and removed Timeshift (remove completely using Synaptics)
I then installed it again, set it up, and verified that /proc is being excluded (I left the defaults, and checked the Summary page, /proc/* is listed there)
Then tried it again, but it's stuck in "Syncing files with rsync". The bar below is empty, and the time remaining shows "??? remaining".

This is the log

[15:43:59] Snapshot location: /run/timeshift/6512/backup
i have more than one drive i backup to and different locations but your location should not be in /run folder. check timeshift > settings > location

I am not sure about your first log, but your latest log makes it look like there may be some odd recursion going on. You have a partition /dev/sda7 as /home. But the latest log states that Timeshift is mounting that same partition to /run/timeshift/6512/backup. I wonder if you see a /home/timeshift directory? If Timeshift does not specifically exclude that directory, then it may be trying to back up the very directory into which it is trying to save snapshots.

I exluded /home/timsehift and tried again, but got the same result.
However, I found a log file called rsync_log in the snapshot folder, rsync always stops at file /opt/chroot/proc/kallsyms. I excluded that only file, and then it stopped at /opt/chroot/proc/ioports, so I then exluded the whole directory, /opt/chroot/proc/*.
I ran it again, and it is now running fine, at 450k+ files (this being a first snapshot, I guess it will take some time).
Still, I do not know the implications of exluding directory /opt/chroot/proc, as it is not in the directories excluded by default...

Thanks!

I have a number of folders in /opt but not a chroot which sounds like you have been building something in there.

I had to also exclude /opt/chroot/run/timeshift/*, as it would seem it was looping trough that directory. The run after that completed fine.
Again, I'm not sure of the implications of excluding both these directories
/opt/chroot/proc/*
/opt/chroot/run/timeshift/*

Thanks!

I haven't done anything weird or funky, only install some basic software (different VPN clients, some IBM java-based software, etc, everything meant for work). Not sure what could have caused this.

you should not even touch exclusions in new timeshift settings. you say you excluded /root? i stayed away from timeshift long time because i could not understand the settings. one day i just installed it, chose location and things worked.

start from the beginning and if you could post snaps of your settings

PS: you say it's working now? something still not clear as to why you need to exclude folders and do not know which.

What you say is what it's actually bothering me. I never ever had to play around with Timeshift settings. When I first installed Mint, I just selected the location and it worked like a charm. A few days ago I tried doing a snapshot prior to the upgrade and it did not work. That's why I started this thread.

Now, by default (I never touched this), Timeshift exludes all files from user directories
/home/guille
/root
/home/cshell

And excludes the following patterns

/home/guille/**
/home/cshell/**
/root/**

In order to have TImeshift complete a snapshot, I had to manually add the following patterns

/opt/chroot/proc - I exluded this one because Tiemshift gets stuck in several files in this folder, like kallsyms and ioports
/opt/chroot/run/timeshift - This one I exluded because Timeshift was looping trough it, saving the same objects over and over
