I need include Win7 in Boot-Menu after HDD failure. Linux Mint 21.1 Cinnamon 64

Post by Spezi »

After a HDD failure, where my boot info was, I did not have my boot menu. I was able to have my Linux Mint entry back. I installed a second Linux Mint to think it will help to get the Win7 back in boot-menu, but did not work.

I made a Boot-Repair info and tried to run Boot-Repair. But I think I made it worse.

Before Boot-Repair:

Code: Select all

boot-repair-4ppa200 [20230320_1052]

============================== Boot Info Summary ===============================

=> libparted MBR boot code is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda.
=> Windows 2000/XP/2003 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdb.
=> Windows 7/8/10/11/2012 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdc.
=> Grub2 (v2.00) is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdd and looks at sector 1 of
the same hard drive for core.img. core.img is at this location and looks
for (,msdos6)/boot/grub. It also embeds following components:

    modules
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
    fshelp ext2 part_msdos biosdisk

Suggested repair: ______________________________________________________________

The default repair of the Boot-Repair utility would reinstall the grub2 of
sdd6 into the MBR of sdd.
Grub-efi would not be selected by default because legacy Windows detected.
Additional repair would be performed: unhide-bootmenu-10s win-legacy-basic-fix

Confirmation request before suggested repair: __________________________________

SFS detected. You may want to retry after converting Windows dynamic partitioning (SFS partitions) to a basic disk. This can be performed via tools such as TestDisk or EASEUS-Partition-Master / MiniTool-Partition-Wizard.
Are you sure you want to continue anyway?

Final advice in case of suggested repair: ______________________________________

Please do not forget to make your BIOS boot on sdd (ATA SSD N18A) disk!

Why do people always look for the most complicated solution?!?
Try the simple one first. I hope you have a working Linux? Boot it, open Terminal and enter the command: sudo update-grub.
Already at the end of the process you will see if the LM has detected Windows 7 of sdc1. If so, after a restart you will see the selection menu.
But it might not. As far as I could read the data, one of your Linuxes is installed in efi. Windows 7 doesn't support it and they will never see it.
If that's the case, copy your precious data, then reinstall everything again in LEGACY MODE - first Windows, then the LM you want.

Thank you for your answer.

Yes, I have functioning Linux Mint on sdd6.

I tried already this

viewtopic.php?p=2260286&hilit=include+w ... u#p2260286

Sudo update-grub was included but did not function:

Code: Select all

pezi@spezipc:~$ sudo update-grub
[sudo] Passwort für spezi:

Sourcing file `/etc/default/grub.d/50_linuxmint.cfg'

Found Linux Mint 21.1 Vera (21.1) on /dev/sdd7

Today I made another Boot-Repair info using my USB-Stick with Linux Mint 21.1:

============================== Boot Info Summary ===============================

What I did not understand is why the drives are recognized ok with the USB-Stick and when I start the installed Linux Mint on sdd6 it says 3 times invalid volume, what was also the output in the Boot-Repair summary after using it.

The summary say that I have Windows XP installed on sdb. That is not true. This is only a data drive like sda. I loose my Windows XP and a big data partition when this drive crashed. I think these are old infos.

Before the crash all was booting well. The Boot-Menu comes up and I could switch to Windows 7, while my Linux Mint on sdd6 was the default boot.

I think there is only a small part in the config which it is not set or not set correctly.

I dont like to install my Windows 7 again for 3 reasons:

1. I do not have the key here.
2. My CD-Rom drive is faulty and open/close automatic more or less frequently, in Windows like in Linux, so I disconnected it.
3. I have so much configuration there, I do not like to loose this all.

I hope my explanation helps to find out what is wrong. If you need some more information, do not hesitate to ask.

I think this mess can only be fixed by a complete reinstall, but follow what I wrote you about BIOS - legacy mode.
1. Install Windows 7. There are tools on the web that can display the registration key. You can create an installation disk on a flash drive at a friend's place.
2. Install LM.

Have you tried going into BIOS and booting from sdc, it may show in BIOS ast HDD2?

When my hardrive (1 TB) crash (one partition with Windows XP and the other one only as data) after that I got a message during booting the drive with the Windows7 installation. Something like that: "no system found, please select a drive with a installed os. (Of course I am not wondering because all the boot info was on the crashed harddrive)

When I booted the Linux Mint drive it was getting into rescue mode.

Now, after I have Linux Mint back with a Boot-Menu, all drives goes into this Boot-Menu, except the drive labeled "Games" which is sda and I substitute it in the same motherboard slot where the broken harddrive was and formatted it with NTFS, because I like to use it as SSD for Windows games.

As the USB-Stick with Linux Mint detect my Windows 7 SSD correctly, is there not a possibility to start Windows 7 with commands in the console like:

bcdedit, chainloader or winload.exe as a workaround?

Maybe I could make a script and execute it for easy use.

Yes, read my post. It is booting and showes the Boot-Menu without the Win7 entry.

Finally I made it.

during booting my Windows 7 SSD I got an error that the Bootmanager is missing.
I solved this with following command in the console of the Windows 7 CD:

BCDboot d:/windows

Now I can boot into Windows 7 again.

Thanks for all who contribute to this topic.
