[RESOLVED] logitech T-BB18 trackball freezes mint 21

Post by SaintDanBert »

After some tinkering and an update cycle, this issue disappeared.
I just hate that! Now I have no idea what made it go away.

Thanks in advance to all who tried to help or read my OP.

=========================================
Friends, I'm desperate for help here. I'm grateful in advance for any help available.

I'm trying to use a Logitech TrackMan Wheel under Mint 21.1. This device has been around forever in internet time so I might need legacy drivers or something. I'm completely stumped.

Is anyone using a trackball and having trouble with a "freeze" from time to time? This happens regardless of the active application or for attempts to select one of the desktops or status line items.

I first noticed this when I "switch users" or "wake from sleep" or "wake from hibernate."
{ASIDE — While I type this it occurs to me that I have not looked at the device ownership or permissions. Since it is my workstation without any other people involved, all "users" have 'admin', 'root', 'wheel' or similar "super user" membership.}

Several things happen during the "freeze".
  • the ball does not move the mouse pointer
  • neither the left or right button result in any happening
  • the wheel does not scroll the current page
It is nearly impossible to do anything on a GUI workstation without a working pointer. As a result, I feel compelled to simply reboot. (I'm not aware of any other way to wake things up.) Similarly, I'm stumped to find ways to troubleshoot this behavior.
