Hard drive filling up rapidly. [Solved]
Hi everyone.
Let me start by saying I am working at a very novice level with regards to any linux distro.
I'm currently running Mint 21mate on an older machine. I'm experiencing two problems which may or may not be linked. 1st and most important: For some reason my storage seems to be filling up dramtically for no reason that I can tell. I have downloaded some standard software on the PC (Libre, VLC, Koodo and Joplin) and am not using any kind of automated backups or antivirus programmes ( I completely disabled timeshift as it ate my hard-drive in the first week and I am not doing anything to require backups currently). All I have used the PC for is completing beginner linux courses online that use a little virtual machine to practice on.
My file system currnely looks like this:
As I say I'm a complete novice so I'm not even certain of a beginners guess. Are there settings/ or functions I should deactivate to avoid this or are there small errors occurring I need to address. I only need the PC for the most basic use at the moment as I'm just teaching myself how to use a linux system with it.
Second problem is when I leave the computer idle for more than an hour it is impossibly slow when I return. It takes a minute or too bring up the unlock screen after I move the mouse, keystrokes register slowly for the password, minutes to unlock and I have to restart it to get anything done. closing whatever I have been working on take ages and bringing up the shutdown menu takes ages. A restart fixes all this but is needed again after every few hours of use or standing idle. I can hear the computer working when I let it stand idle and the system monitor shows consistent moderate use of the CPU even when nothing is open and I'm not using the
I'm not sure if this constant working in the background is generating some logs or other outputs that are eating storage and memory. I switched from cinnamon to mate to see if it is lighter on resources but the problem still occurs.
The two issues may not be linked at all in which case I'm happy to open a new topic tackle them individually if needed.
I'm sure you may all need more detailed info than what I am able to give first time round but I'll follow any instructions given.
Many thanks

Re: Hard drive filling up rapidly.
At first we need to know, where you used the 900 GB.
There is a program in the system to analyze this. The name is language dependent, but if you open the menu and enter baobab in the search bar, you will get it. We need an analyze o the complete system ( / ). Be aware, that this will take some time. Also note, that you will see an error message, that not all folders could get inspected, this is normal and you can ignore it.

Re: Hard drive filling up rapidly.
Start with a "clean slate".
First, save your My Documents folder to an external source drive.
Second, burn the Linux Mint ISO image to an external USB thumb drive.
Third, shut down your system.
Now, start your system, then immediately boot to the BIOS menu by pressing (and holding) the appropriate Function key, e.g., F2.
Select the Boot sub-menu, then follow instructions to re-order the boot list, moving the external USB thumb drive to the first position.
Select Save option, then shut down.
Insert thumb drive containing ISO image, then restart.
Choose the option to "Erase everything and install Linux Mint".
Good luck!

/var/log exploding and eating my storage
Hi everybody.
This is an additional topic to one I started earlier. It can be seen here: viewtopic.php?p=2311813#p2311813
I was having trouble with my storage dissappearing. Some digging of my own pointed me to var/log expanding rapidly due to errors.
I ran ls -l /var/log
After running tail -200 /var/log/syslog I get this output
I think theres a sign of recurring error in all this. I've managed to gather info. I'm now a bit stuck for a fix.

Re: /var/log exploding and eating my storage
It is the same topic as in the other thread and so it has to get continued there. Otherwise we will jump back and forth and produce more misunderstandings than anything else.

Re: Hard drive filling up rapidly.
Hi.
I did some digging into my /var/log files.
ls-l /var/log shows:
syslog seems to be the large files.
i tried tail -200 /var/log/syslog
I think I'm on to something now but can somebody point me further.
Also, can I cap the size of the log files?

Thank you, I was getting near the limit. Can you explain in Newbie terms what this command means. I'm busy teaching myself command line basics. I recognise kind of whats happening but a pro's words would help.
Thanks again. narrowly avoided disaster

Your most welcome.
I am no "pro", though I have been around awhile.
The explanation of that command is;
First, all the
.gz
log files are older compressed logs, and removing them will still leave you the two most recent files to look at, so no harm removing them.sudo -- needed to do anything to do with system files.
rm -- is remove
* -- before .gz was used as a match for the 1,2,3,4
* -- after .gz was used to match all those -NUMBER.backup files you had.
and frankly I've never seen those backup files before, and wonder how you got them ?
You can if you like remove any other .gz log files. The kern.log.*.gz* files are quite large too ?
sudo rm /var/log/kern.log.*.gz*
Have you applied @rene's fix
Anyway my Mint 21 system is about 3 weeks old, and after running that same command myself my /var/log directory was a mere 75MB
here's a command to check that with easy to read output,
Code: Select all
rick@t420:~$ sudo du -h /var/log
80K /var/log/lightdm
36K /var/log/cups
16K /var/log/timeshift
4.0K /var/log/ntpstats
4.0K /var/log/private
4.0K /var/log/installer
4.0K /var/log/hp/tmp
8.0K /var/log/hp
104K /var/log/apt
4.0K /var/log/journal/36892a0f43ac45eeb59bbcb2ea2eac51
73M /var/log/journal/6c2e35427858496854596b4933396574
73M /var/log/journal
4.0K /var/log/samba
4.0K /var/log/openvpn
4.0K /var/log/speech-dispatcher

Re: Hard drive filling up rapidly.
Rick..thanks again hehe.
I worked my through the easy linux tips project which you recommended on the topic Rene referred me to. My disk usge has gone from 92% to 3%.
ls -l /var/log still shows the recurring error which is to be expected. I'm going to try changing the kernel parameters but some of the instructions look foriegn to me so IM gonna be spending some time researching that.

Re: Hard drive filling up rapidly.
I am trying o carry out the instructions for adding kernel parametres.
I can't access any option to press E to edit the linux boot entry.Pressing esc or shift on start up takes me to something that looks like the GRUB menu but offers only the option to boot or to go to ASUS own bios/system mangement screen. I've attached an image
Do I need to switch boot programmes to one that allows editing?

Re: Hard drive filling up rapidly.
That image is not of the Grub menu but of your BIOS. If you don't get the Grub menu automatically on boot (on a dual-boot system you do/would) you need to tap Esc in the window between BIOS and OS, i.e., when the BIOS is done initializing the system and loads Grub from disk.
If you have trouble there just use method 2 from the linked instructions immediately. You're quite likely to need to do so anyway -- and if not, it's as said there as easy undone as done anyway.

Re: Hard drive filling up rapidly.
Thanks everyone. PCI=commconf seems to have stopped the error. I hope one day I'll understand everything I've just done
Problem solved.
