Thunderbolt to HDMI on Mac Air 2015 keep disconnecting[SOLVED]

Post by chrishe0514 »

I recently install Linux Mint 21.1 Cinnamon on my 2015 Mac Air, when I tried to connect a external monitor, the monitor did show the desktop but it blackout every few second. I tried different monitor and HDMI cable, same thing happened. When I switched back the Mac OS, the monitor worked fine.

Welcome to the forum, chrishe0514.

Please open Update Manager and run all the available updates. Your system is not using the latest kernel, Cinnamon, Mesa, and probably others as well. Maybe that will help.

If it does not help, are you booting with grub? If so, we can try adding a kernel parameter which may help.

Updating did fix the blackout! Thank you. But then I found that there is no sound on the HDMI output.

Sound drivers are separate from the graphics drivers and the no sound problem is not a problem with graphics driver. Please go to your first post in this topic, click the pencil icon, and add [SOLVED] to the beginning of the title so others know you are no longer seeking help on this issue.

With regards to sound, please check the Tips for Troubleshooting Sound Issues Rev. 1 which is stickied to the top of the Sound forum. If you are not able to solve the issue with those tips or through searches on that forum related to Apple hardware, please create a new topic in that forum.

You may also want to consider your options for keeping your system cooler. Apple hardware tends to run warm and yours definitely is.
Sensors:
System Temperatures: cpu: 84.0 C pch: 78.5 C mobo: N/A
Fan Speeds (RPM): N/A

I will point out there is no sound coming through. The output is 0.00 dB.

Code: Select all

  * index: 2
	name: <alsa_output.pci-0000_00_03.0.hdmi-stereo>
	driver: <module-alsa-card.c>

	        balance 0.00
