Timeshift BTRFS Error

Post by suphicakir »

Hello friends.

I have been using linux for a long time. I tried many distributions and I installed linux mint again and continue with linux mint. I'm still using Mint now. I have a quick question for you. My system's local language settings are Turkish. While the local language of the system is English, I can back up the btrfs file system with Timeshift as both btrfs and rsync, I don't have any problems. When I change the system local language to Turkish, when I try to take a backup with btrfs from the Timeshift visual interface, it gives an error starting with @ and @home and does not backup. It doesn't do it on restore. It is very interesting that when I enter this command "sudo timeshift --create --comments "Return Back" --tags D" from the terminal, I can get a backup.

Have you encountered such an error before? I've done a lot of research on the solution of this, but I couldn't come to a conclusion. Can you help me?

Kind regards.

Note : My English is not very good, I translated this text from Turkish to English using google translate. I put my question to you as politely as I could. If I used a rude expression, I apologize in advance. :)

Re: Timeshift BTRFS Error

Post by Reddog1 »

Timeshift supports BTRFS snapshots, but not backups. A snapshot is taken from the selected BTRFS partition, and cannot save across a different partition. If you want to backup btrfs snapshots, then you have to use the combination of btrfs send and btrfs receive commands, or use a program that does. BTRFS can take snapshots and backups to external storage, which Timeshift doesn't support. Timeshift doesn't do btrfs backups, it just takes snapshots on the same partition. If you use btrfs, you should be using another program to backup snapshots (look into 'snapper'), not Timeshift.
it gives an error starting with @ and @home
This indicates that the snapshot of / (root) and /home is attempting to save to somewhere other than @ (/) and @home (/home). Note above:

A snapshot is taken from the selected BTRFS partition, and cannot save across a different partition

From the wiki:
Only Ubuntu-type layouts with @ and @home subvolumes are supported
@ and @home subvolumes may be on same or different BTRFS volumes
@ may be on BTRFS volume and /home may be mounted on non-BTRFS partition
Other layouts are not supported
I've used BTRFS in a virtual machine (Garuda linux uses btrfs as default), but I'm not expert.
