Hello, I have a custom desktop running Linux Mint that keeps crashing. The display goes black with no signal and mouse/keyboard do not work except SysReq with REISUB. Kernel is tainted from nvidia gpu and I have installed and uninstalled nvidia drivers and every kernel in update manager to no avail. I have also tried newer kernels with mainline kernel installer up to 6.2.8. How do I go about cleaning what needs to be cleaned to install kernel and drivers that aren't tainted ?

You can not. The kernel is always tainted when you install a third-party driver such as Nvidia. In fact, there is a problem if the kernel is not tainted. What is a tainted kernel in Linux?

The fact the kernel is tainted has nothing to do with your display going black or your mouse or keyboard not working. Are you only worried about the kernel taint or are these other issues the real problem?

output of journalctl -rb -1
I just checked this and it appears you may be running into the issue with the nvidia-blacklist file which is preventing the Nvidia driver from loading.
Check to make sure there is not a "blacklist-nvidia.conf" file (or something similarly named) by getting a list of the files in the /lib/modprobe.d directory.

Yes the other issues are the real problem, with no display, mouse or keyboard it's pretty much useless. The tainted kernel was something I found when trying to figure it out. It happens randomly from 5 minutes to 12+ hours in use.

Do you have the computer set to automatically suspend if it is not in use? If that is the case and you are using an Nvidia driver, please make sure you have the workaround mentioned in this post in place. Most 700 and 900 series GPUs have the issue. If you need detailed instructions for editing the file then see this post and the subsequent ones in that topic.
Some GPUs also have uses resuming from suspend when using the open-source nouveau driver.

No it is set to never in power management. I've switched to nouveau driver and same problem still exists.

If you're not using the nvidia driver, and at least you are not in the output above, then this will remove any reference for the nvidia driver(which is possibly not even on the system anymore), from any attempts at booting it.
Just curious, when the screen goes black, how are you sure that the mouse and keyboard aren't working? -because you mention using REISUB.

ps. disable your onboard intel gpu.
I couldn't keep messing around with rebooting constantly to have a system that worked. The nvidia gpu has been removed, now running on built-in graphics. About five hours so far and it hasn't went black yet, but that doesn't mean anything. It will sometimes go 12 hours or more without going black. The gpu was there for the color scheme and was not needed.
How do I know the keyboard and mouse not working is a good question. I said not working because they would not wake the computer like they used to. Sysrq key I thought worked regardless of system state and REISUB was only thing I was able to do with keyboard.

The nvidia gpu has been removed,
Ok, great. At a minimum this should either show some different result or not. -which is good in the end, that's progress.

keyboard and mouse not working
Based on the stuff, and I'm not completely guessing, but I would see the keyboard and mouse were working, and probably was a gpu-related problem. -well REISUB worked so that's a thing.

Keep us posted.
I believe I'm going to blame it on the graphics card. 24 hours now without issue using integrated graphics. The card was kinda old and well used over numerous PC builds. Never had problems with it until recently and going back to a kernel and drivers that worked before should work now and that's just not the case. I didn't need it but the gaping hole kinda sucks. Oh well, is what it is and ain't what it ain't.

I haven't read through this whole thread but I had a similar issue and it ended up being a hardware issue, popped cap on motherboard or GPU.
If you hardware is of age I would look for signs of power supply and or board issues. Just a thought, if it's 5 years or older, over worked, over temped, etc,
it's a very likely issue.
