Unable to select certain display dimensions after GPU swap

Post by Amatereasu »

heya, so i just got my new rig set up, i have a Radeon RX 6500 XT, most importantly, my previous GPU was an HD 6570, and before when i used Mint i was able to select 1280x728 (because my monitor is 16:10), but now that i have this new GPU, it doesnt let me for some reason... the monitor tells me that its not compatible as dimensions, but i used it before??
is there anything i can do to fix this? i ended up having to use 1280x720 and everything looks just a LITTLE BIT compressed.. and the color range is all out of wack... really reduces the graphics capability of my very capable GPU on the screen
help? :3

Welcome to the forum, Amatereasu.

Please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxrz
Click </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply and then place your cursor between the code tags and paste the results of the command between the code tags
Results
. This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware.

Please also provide the output of

Code: Select all

xrandr
and enclose the results in code tags. The tutorial Displaying terminal output in a post has a graphic on using code tags.

1280x728 is not a standard resolution and is not a 16:10 aspect ratio, but is closer to 16:9.
1280x800 has a 16:10 aspect ratio.

What is the brand and model number of the monitor?

i have noo idea.. its old enough for it to have a VGA port on it, and it says "PHILIPS on the front of the monitor :'3
it might actually be 16:9, 720 fits fine on this screen, but when i used 728 it was way sharper and more clean looking,

Please describe what "not boot" means.

If you did not clean your root partition, your drive is probably full which will prevent the system from booting. At more than 93%, you were probably lucky you were able to boot to get the information you posted.

If you put in the correct password and the computer keeps coming back to the login screen, that is known as a login loop and, yes, a full root partition will cause that to happen.

When you say you just fixed it, does that mean you are now able to log in or do you need help clearing some space on your root partition so you can log in?

well, what happens is that when Mint boots it skips the login screen entirely, instead requiring me to login once i open (some) programs
my usual first thing i do once i boot is to open discord, so it then asks me to login, and that the "login keyring failed". it seems to be stable, and this was an issue for a loooongg time, enough for me to forget that i had a login screen in the first place lol
i am currently posting from my computer ^^ so im fine, thank you <3

This sounds like you have Mint set up to automatically log you in. If that is the case, then you would not see the login screen.
Amatereasu wrote: Sat Apr 01, 2023 10:45 pminstead requiring me to login once i open (some) programs
I've seen people post about issues like that, but would have to hunt for the topics. That can happen if you have your system set up to automatically log you in.

 I recall seeing topics where people were getting the keyring message when opening Chrome or other web browsers. Your issue is likely similar.

That's good. Make sure to clean out any old kernels you are no longer using and try to get your root partition below 75% full.

If you open the Display app, is there an option for 1920x1080 in the drop-down box for the monitor?

This sounds like you have Mint set up to automatically log you in. If that is the case, then you would not see the login screen.

I've seen people post about issues like that, but would have to hunt for the topics. That can happen if you have your system set up to automatically log you in.

it is available yes, but my monitor itself is 1280x720, not 1920x1080... Mint and even my motherboard seem to think that it is the default for some reason,

And you are not able to select 1920x1080 from the drop-down?

I wonder if the issue is your cable?

Check in /var/log/Xorg.0.log and see if the monitor's name/version number is listed. There is usually a section with specific information (if available) before all the lines listing the available resolutions.

off topic, but.. ive been in the process of copying my home folder for something like 20-30 minutes now, and its really choking my performance
i wish it showed an output log so i could know if it was even doing this properly, or if it was stuck or etc.

I usually just use the file manager to copy contents of my home folder to an external drive. Nemo gives the completion status.

If most of your root partition are files in the home folder, it's going to take a while. You have 140GB of data in your root partition.
