[SOLVED] External screen working only with NVidia Performance-Mode

Post by maffin »

Hi!
Is it just me or with version 525 I get issues while using an external screen with my laptop?
I cannot use the external screen as primary without being in NVidia performance-mode, on-demand just simply does not work and only shows the cursor if I mirror the laptop's screen.
I feel like it's too early for me to blame these NVidia drivers since it's my first time with Linux Mint, but I wanted to hear you out just in case.
I'm wondering if it's an hardware limitation given that the HDMI port in laptops with a discrete graphics card are usually interfaced with it.
Sorry if my guess may seem really dumb.

Welcome to the forum, maffin.

Please open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click the Copy button in the lower right and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware.

This is likely the issue.

Your inxi output seems to indicate the HDMI port may only be attached to the Nvidia GPU which matches your observations.

Device-1: Intel Alder Lake-P GT1 [UHD Graphics] vendor: ASUSTeK driver: i915 v: kernel ports:
active: none off: eDP-1 empty: DP-1,DP-2
bus-ID: 00:02.0 chip-ID: 8086:46a3

Device-2: NVIDIA GA106M [GeForce RTX 3060 Mobile / Max-Q] vendor: ASUSTeK driver: nvidia
v: 525.89.02 pcie: speed: 16 GT/s lanes: 8 ports: active: none off: HDMI-A-1 empty: DP-3,eDP-2
bus-ID: 01:00.0 chip-ID: 10de:2520

Just letting you know if this is the correct link Product Support For FX517ZM, the latest BIOS/UEFI is 316 and lists "Optimize system performance".

Machine:
Type: Laptop System: ASUSTeK product: ASUS TUF Dash F15 FX517ZM_FX517ZM v: 1.0

Mobo: ASUSTeK model: FX517ZM v: 1.0 serial: <superuser required>
UEFI: American Megatrends LLC. v: FX517ZM.312 date: 02/24/2022

I'm not aware it would have any effect on this issue, but ASUS update usually do help with any performance issues.

Also, with a 12th-gen Intel CPU, I do recommend using a newer kernel than the 5.15 LTS for better support/performance of the cores. You can install the latest 6.0-oem kernel with

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install linux-oem-22.04b
and reboot.

Thank you, I've updated the kernel and the BIOS as well. I didn't know I could check such infos with inxi. Thank you so much!
