Paid help troubleshooting LM freezing bugs.
I've had a miserable time installing LM 20 and 21 on a newer laptop.
So many hard shutdowns, and intermittent freezing all the time.
Where does one go to get professional help? I can't really afford to be wasting so much time chasing bugs and I don't have the expertise.
I really enjoyed LM for a 2nd life on my older laptop, worked near impeccably, BUT IT'S SO UNRELIABLE AND UNSTABLE WITH NEWER TECHNOLOGY..
I wish had just left the factory windows install on it.
Asking/waiting for help on some forum, hoping more experienced people will take the time to help you is like begging for change in the street. Might work out ok if you have unlimited time to wait around, but if you've got stuff to do it's entirely impractical.

When you say 'Newer Technology' what are you talking about? Desktop, laptop, what make and/or model. How did you install LM 21.1, via CD, thumb drive? I am going to make some assumptions.
1. You used a thumb drive to install, when you get to the part where you select where to put the installation select 'Format Disk' and do a clean installation. Follow the instructions. If you tell it to erase the HDD it will take quite some time so be patient and get sandwich or something. Let me know how it comes out.

have you tried
if you really need a stable machine with newer hardware, i recommend to try https://fedoraproject.org/ and see if it is compatible with your hardware
OEM Kernel

Re: Paid help troubleshooting LM freezing bugs.
+1. I've seen these offers for years, it's a lot harder than you think to find anyone willing and able to do it. Esp. the able part.Midnight True wrote: ⤴Mon Apr 24, 2023 8:02 pm have you triedOEM Kernel

I've done a fresh install of 21.1 and 20.3 over 10-20 times now.
I've tried every kernel under the sun, a, b, c, d... OEM, Generic... all of it.
I'm still getting intermittent freezing.

Re: Paid help troubleshooting LM freezing bugs.
awww that is unfortunate, fedora has cinnamon spin too https://spins.fedoraproject.org/cinnamon/ ... trying a live boot or just a minimal install (dual boot with your current LM at moment) with dedicated minimal partition just for testing. Fedora is known to ship all the latest feature linux offers on every version release cycle, yet stable compared to arch, thus making them suited for newer hardware. However if the intermittent freezing still persist even with fedora, it might be hardware related, you can check your machine's component if they are might loose or dirty or malfunctioning.
To my knowledge OEM kernel is specially written by ubuntu to work with newer hardware but they prefer hardware support for server machines. Fedora on the other works well with desktops out of the box.

Re: Paid help troubleshooting LM freezing bugs.
Thank you for your compassion Midnight True.
One theory on the problem is that because my machine is rated for Windows Only, I have to have Windows on it for the purposes of updating the firmware/BIOS/UEFI.
So, maybe I NEED to have dual boot with WIndows for this purpose, even if I don't want it. LAME.
I'm so over it... I can't believe I wasted my hard earned cash on a lemon. I spent so much time researching every last little detail and I had no idea that there was even such thing as a WINDOWS specific LENOVO!!!! ARGHHH!!!
I thought Lenovo was supposed to be so awesome for Linux, that's specifically why I purchased it. But, it would seem they're just another crap corporation producing proprietary junk, where the end user gets stuck dissatisfied.

Re: Paid help troubleshooting LM freezing bugs.
it would be nice to know something about the PCs hardware:
viewtopic.php?t=318644
copy the result of that, back here, on your reply.
as an side note, the Lenovo range of PCs was / is quite popular,
on this forum, for an period of time, and there is lots of folks that are using an re-cycled Lenovo laptop.
- myself include, and I've an whole heap of these PCs.
then, things were changed, specifically with the new PCs being customised for the win-8 system,
and these types of PCs are less easy to convert than their predecessors were.
it's not impossible though, just an little more tricky,
and my later Laptops, all of which are now an HP brand, were originally with that win-8 system.
the thing is, that the Windows System is an highly customised system,
that relies heavily on using external manufacturer supplied drivers, to run theses machines,
and any Linux System is often, just an plain vanilla system,
thus, there can be some issues with hardware, when converting these PCs to any Linux System.
it does happen.

Re: Paid help troubleshooting LM freezing bugs.
Everything seems to run fine other than this bizarre intermittent freeze.
I could post the -Inxi as I have about 50 times already asking for help, but nothing ever happens, and I don't find the answer.
I've begged any experienced user to help me troubleshoot the journalctl logs, and see if I can figure out the problem.
So, if you have something to offer - feel free to chime in on my most recent cry for help in the appropriate forum.

I like your gusto tho, Pierre!

It may be a memory issue, go to the following URL and download the test app. run it overnight or whatever length they recommend.

How professional? Most computer shops have at least one person on team who does Linux. Not gonna be cheap, though.
Another option is to post on a local bulletin board. Students are cheaper, but still learning. It's a trade-off.

I did a full memtest when I installed the 32GB RAM.
It came back fine, that was just a few months ago.

Yes, I paid someone to install my m.2 and 32GB ram, and it looked pretty easy to do.
But, I'd never ripped open a laptop before, so was anxious to do so without supervision.

Re: Paid help troubleshooting LM freezing bugs.
Years ago I had intermittent hangs/lockups on an HP due to
https://askubuntu.com/questions/52096/w ... olapic-etc
As recall, many chip manufacturers are deferring power management to the OS. What this means is that (just like in display boot strapping) there is a point where the hardware bootstrapping does a hand off to the OS. (for display driver and power management)
In my case, I had to turn off the power management with grub options.

Could you tell me more about 'turning off power management' thru grub?

Re: Paid help troubleshooting LM freezing bugs.
This:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBootParameters
should explain how to temporarily edit boot options for testing and then how to add them permanently once you find ones that work.
In my case, I added
noapic acpi=off
after the queit option (the end of the grub line)
That might not work for you, but you can try it since it's just editing the grub command line at boot and no permanent changes are done until you you edit grub.

Re: Paid help troubleshooting LM freezing bugs.
I was hoping that last intel graphics chip update would do the trick, but it didn't.
I'll try anything at this point.
I'm not having freezing until hours into the session, days sometimes, tho...
So, I'm not sure it's related to boot.
I tried changing the intel p state drivers to acpi, and some other things, but still had freezing at some point.
SMG thinks it's a hardware issue, but my BIOS hardware tests say everything is fine?

The switches I used turned power management off
