What is the output for

Code: Select all

aplay -l
on your Linux Mint install?

The part I quoted is the audio card and the information I found for it indicates it has been supported since the 4.5 kernel.

You indicated you installed pavucontrol on Linux Mint. Please attach a screenshot (the attachments button is below the reply box) of alsamixer with the ALC3228 card selected. You want to make sure none of the columns have MM at the bottom because that means those options are muted.

If you need more information about pavucontrol, please check the Audio Volume Options section of the Tips for Troubleshooting Sound Issues Rev. 1 topic.

Yes, there is a LMDE section Debian Edition Support. Sound would be under Hardware Support in that section.

What kernel do you have installed right now on Linux Mint?

Did you have wifi with the Kubuntu 23.04 live session?

Okay. Usually, if a sound card does not show up, the only way to get it to appear is to use a newer kernel.
spaarks wrote: Thu May 04, 2023 3:29 pmYes I had wifi with Kubuntu Live and also with Ubuntu Desktop Live....but no sound with either.
I don't understand why you didn't have wifi with the 5.19 or 6.1-oem kernels when you have it with both the 5.15 and the 6.2 kernels, but maybe the information in this topic will help you because it looks like the same device and the same thing happened to that person no wifi after update (Solved). Just ask if you have any questions about the information in that topic.

That seems a bit too advanced for me. In any case the sound did not work in the newer kernels.

I ran a live Manjaro, which uses arch rather than ubuntu.
Alsamixer (F6) shows sofessx8336 soundcard.
I set max vol in alsamixer and the manjaro sound output. Nothing from speakers but sound from headphones but very low.

That does not tell me with what you might need help.

There are step-by-step instructions at the link which describes how to add the rtw88 driver from Larry Finger.
spaarks wrote: Fri May 05, 2023 8:31 amIn any case the sound did not work in the newer kernels.
I need to see the output of this command with the newer kernels.

Code: Select all

journalctl -k | grep -Ei "ALSA|HDA|sof[-]|HDMI|snd[_-]|sound|hda.codec|hda.intel"
You may need to add firmware so your sound works, but I can not know that without the data.
spaarks wrote: Fri May 05, 2023 8:45 am I ran a live Manjaro, which uses arch rather than ubuntu.
Alsamixer (F6) shows sofessx8336 soundcard.
The sofessx8336 is what the other person in the link I provided earlier in the topic has.
spaarks wrote: Fri May 05, 2023 8:45 amI set max vol in alsamixer and the manjaro sound output. Nothing from speakers but sound from headphones but very low.
I will repeat what I advised earlier:
SMG wrote: Thu May 04, 2023 8:52 amThe person in the other topic had to install alsamixer and make adjustments, "It work enabling both right and left Mixer DAC in alsamixer, also i put everything at 100% volume". However, that presumes all the correct firmware is installed which is why I ask for the output of the command.
It's hard to help you when you keep jumping around trying this and that and you don't provide the information I request.

I was trying to find a distro that works with the ssx8336 sound card. You seemed interested in the live Kubuntu. But you are right it only adds confusion so I will confine my posts to data you have asked for!

The other topic I provided in this post indicates it works with Linux Mint, but there may be some changes needed so it works.

Can you provide the output of

Code: Select all

journalctl -k | grep -Ei "ALSA|HDA|sof[-]|HDMI|snd[_-]|sound|hda.codec|hda.intel"
with the 5.19 or 6.1-oem kernel installed? If you do not have wifi working, perhaps you can copy it to a usb to switch to a different computer so you can provide the information.

Or you can see if you get a tether working as per the link in these instructions so you can get the wifi working

I'm going on a trip tomorrow and need my laptop to be fully functioning, so I'm going to re-install Windows for the moment.
I will return to this when I get back in a couple of weeks.
Meanwhile thank you very much for your help.

I have installed Ubuntu Lobster which uses Linux Kernel 6.2 but the sound is still not working.
The wi-fi is OK.
Sound was fine in Windows, but I'd prefer to stick with LM.

The person in this topic [SOLVED] USB audio output not working after update: only dummy output just found success with the essx8336 sound card in addition to the other person I previously mentioned.

You never supplied the information I requested earlier so I do not know at this time what might be needed for your situation. Please provide the output of

Are you still using the 5.15 kernel? I believe there are options for rtl8821ce which will work on newer kernels, but I suggest making a topic in the Networking forum to get help with that.

Are you now using a usb sound card? I noticed this in the output.

Code: Select all

Yes 5.15. I tried 6.1 but there were issues with WiFi.
Ubuntu lobster uses kernel 6.2 which does not work for sound either .
I was not using usb sound card at the time I took the output snapshot, but a usb sound card works ok.
On Windows the sound is ok, so my hardware is ok

And you didn't try installing any drivers to fix those wifi issues?

If the wifi is working with the 6.2 kernel, I believe you can install that same kernel with Mainline – Another Tool to Install Latest Kernel in Ubuntu / Linux Mint. Why don't you give that a try and then provide the output of

Code: Select all

journalctl -k | grep -Ei "ALSA|HDA|sof[-]|HDMI|snd[_-]|sound|hda.codec|hda.intel"
with the 6.2 kernel.
