(solved) USB3 ports seem to be dead.

Post by bjhkjhkrdjbv »

I have three USB devices, two USB3 harddisks and a USB2 webcam. All three worked with all ports on previous versions of Mint. Now all three only work with the USB2 port and are ignored when plugged into any of the USB3 ports. Computer is a HP Z220.

Run

Code: Select all

.lsusb
Connect the device to the port and run lsusb again.
This time, you should see an extra device listed, with a Bus ID, Device ID, USB ID, and a description.

Also see output of

Code: Select all

usb-devices
for the command description use

Code: Select all

man lsusb

For the second "lsusb" a hard disk was connected to a USB3 port but the outputs are the same.

Found the solution elsewhere. In /etc/default/grub change
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash iommu=soft"
and run
sudo update-grub
Apparently this change costs nothing unless you need some special features for virtual machines

This worked for a short time. Now the problem is back despite the change. USB3 is dead and USB2 is working. I tried plugging in my phone and my harddisk, both with the same result. Both devices are built for USB3. Was there an update that affects USB very recently?

lsusb did not return any "Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub"
We got to know your usb 3.0 controller: lspci -nn

According to HP support
there is a "HP USB 3.0 2 x 2 Port SuperSpeed PCIe x1 Card" in your workstation, an add-in card.
I doubt HP made their own. It should be based on a common chip like NEC, Via, Asmedia etc.

I have personal experience of regressions affecting a via usb 3.0 card with LTS kernels 5.10 & 5.15 & 6.1.
Solution was installing a different non-LTS kernel.

This is a USB 3.0 controller. Not on an add-in card but integrated into the chipset and well-supported on Linux by all accounts..

HP support page states that this machine comes with pciex1 card with 2 ports but it is not detected.

So you have 2 USB 3.0 ports on the front side from Intel chipset and perhaps 2 USB 3.0 ports from the extra card at the back panel I/O?

And no USB 3.0 port either back or front is working?

The cards are no longer there. I have two USB3 ports and one USB2 port on the front side. They are connected to the motherboard directly. There are also USB2 and USB3 ports on the backside of the motherboard. All ports give electricity but only the USB2 ones recognize hardware under Linux. The BIOS sees the hard disk when it is connected to USB3.

Now USB3 works again. Update history shows some system updates today so that may have been it.
