[SOLVED] No sound and Dummy Output ruining my experience

Post by Melu »

Hello everybody. I hate to ask for help in this forum but I have no other option to open a new thread, altho I researched in this forum.
It happened probably after an update, done few days ago on the 16th, about since the problem started, maybe? (on Monday I had no problem). Internal laptop speakers don't work at all, neither jack/outside speakers, while bluetooth speakers work badly. I would appreciate a lot your help and I'll try my best to give you the info you need.
Changin kernel didn't help and I tried to install other drivers unsuccessfully.
I learned to show you these 3 outputs while a song or video is playing:

Do you have the latest bios for your computer?

Moving up to tha latest kernel recommended for Mint 21.1 may help. Worth try. Latest is 6.1.0.1012-oem
There is a reason why kernels change - improvement.

It was the latest Bios version, and HP wanted me to even rollback. This hasn't changed anything.

Does your laptop come with any "Function Keys / hardware switches" ?
You may have accidentally switched default audio output off.

inxi detects your controller but alaplay -l does not list any pch device.

Yes, there are two buttons close to keyboard, for Wifi and Audio. Audio is on.

I keep trying to find a solution and I removed speech-dispatcher also, but this didn't help. Dummy output still there and nothing I tried works.

Usually, when this happens, one should roll back to a Timeshift snapshot of when their system was working and then test the updates to see which one might have caused the change.
Melu wrote: Thu May 18, 2023 9:26 am Changin kernel didn't help and I tried to install other drivers unsuccessfully.
What drivers did you try to install?
Did you remove those drivers after you discovered they did not work?

When did you install JACK?
And do you know it was not running when you ran inxi?

Code: Select all

Audio:
  Device-1: Intel Haswell-ULT HD Audio vendor: Hewlett-Packard
    driver: snd_hda_intel v: kernel bus-ID: 00:03.0
  Sound Server-1: ALSA v: k5.15.0-72-generic running: yes
  Sound Server-2: JACK v: 1.9.20 running: no
  Sound Server-3: PulseAudio v: 15.99.1 running: yes
  Sound Server-4: PipeWire v: 0.3.48 running: yes
The aplay -l output does not show a sound card. That is why "dummy output" is showing.
Melu wrote: Mon May 22, 2023 10:09 am This solution from askubuntu gave me as a result a new output and replaced Dummy Output, but no sound yet.
What is the new output? HDMI output was showing in your prior aplay -l output so I do not see new output.
Melu wrote: Mon May 22, 2023 10:47 am This is my alsa-base.conf. Can you notice something wrong?
If you did not change anything here and did not do any ALSA updates, then there should not be anything to see here.
Melu wrote: Tue May 23, 2023 2:51 pm I keep trying to find a solution and I removed speech-dispatcher also, but this didn't help. Dummy output still there and nothing I tried works.
Try reverting to a Timeshift snapshot of when your system was working. You keep making changes which is only going to make it harder to find the problem because you now have so many changes.

Boot to a live session and give us the results of aplay -l.

Yes I did Timeshift as well, it didn't solve the issue.

This is the difference from the non-live aply -l ? I noticed in my research that basically I couldn't get the analog, or "analog-output" to be recognised/to work. I looked into this direction but I haven't found a solution.

Then it is possible the problem is not due to an update.
Melu wrote: Thu May 25, 2023 6:51 amI wasn't succesful at installing new ones, I remember terminal gave me errors.
I am not aware of a way to install any audio drivers. The drivers are in the kernel and not installed separately so I have no guesses as to what you tried to do.

That is the issue. Something in your install changed because the live session is showing that audio card exists on your system.

What is the output of

Code: Select all

journalctl -k | grep -Ei "ALSA|HDA|sof[-]|HDMI|snd[_-]|sound|hda.codec|hda.intel"
I'm not sure this will work How can I enable the drivers for beats audio speakers for hp envy dv6? because your install is not currently showing the audio card, but maybe it will be helpful later if we can get the card to show.
