How to record streaming sound such as a radio program? [SOLVED]

Post by mmm »

[SOLVED - by installing the flatpak "Recorder", which is simple to use and works well.]

I would like to record this BBC Radio 4 programme:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0532g05

What program should I use?

There used to be something called audio recorder, which recorded any sound being played by the computer speakers, but that doesn't seem to have a version for mint 21.
I'm using mint 21.1 cinnamon.

What's the best thing to use?

It is in 21.1 Software Manager as well, but only as a Flatpak..

I generally use Audacity, However, it can sometimes be a pain to get it to recognise the audio stream, Pulse Audio is required for some streams.

I tried Recorder but could not make it do anything at all.
There were no instructions or help file or manual - nothing!
Please tell me how to make it work.

Open the Software Manager and search for "Audacity."
in Audacity and go to the "Edit" menu. From there, choose "Preferences", and select the "Devices" tab. Set the "Recording Device" to your system's audio input

You could also use VLC.
If you can hear the stream, you can also do a a simple arecord command.

"Recorder" from Software Manager looks simple.
Can anyone here get it to work?

It is very simple.
Open the Recorder App.
Press the Record button.
It will automatically start an MP3 file with todays' date & time.
Start any item you want to record.
Stop recording when finished.
The title of the saved file can be edited into something more readable by using the pencil icon.

Thank you RIH
First I installed it on a desktop - inspiron 620 but it would not launch - no idea why.
Then on this ideapad z570 - and it worked!
Sound quality is good.
Could not be simpler to use.
The files are in a strange place - a hidden folder:
/home/john/.var/app/com.github.alexkdeveloper.recorder/data/Recordings/28.05.2023 14:15:17.mp3
Why would they be placed there?
Can they be moved?
Is it to do with flatpak?

You could certainly move recordings after completion if, for example, you wanted to use something other than recorder to play them.

I think that the whole idea of Recorder is that you have your recordings placed in a certain location for it to play them, modify titles, as well as record.
It makes the program far less complicated that way as the user has very few choices to make. The fact that it is recording to an obscure location I guess has the advantage that any user is highly unlikely to be using the same folder for personal reasons & so keeps simplicity again.

Thanks again, RIH.
I now want to find why I cannot install Recorder on the Inspiron 620.
Terminal gives this:
john@insp620:~$ flatpak list
error: While opening repository /home/john/.local/share/flatpak/repo: opening repo: opendir(objects): No such file or directory
john@insp620:~$

That error from flatpak list does not happen on other machines.
Any idea what it might mean?
Or how to fix it?
(BTW I have done a lot of searching.)

If necessary I may do a clean install of mint 21.1 cinnamon.
But that would take a long time on this computer because there's so much on it.

Mmm. strange

Your system is saying that it cannot open
/home/john/.local/share/flatpak/repo
on your machine as it does not exist.
I have just had a look at a "clean" copy of Mint & that file exists even if you have no flatpaks installed.
In that case the terminal reply to your flatpak list input should just be blank.

If I were you :D
Firstly I would open up Software Manager & type in Recorder.
What options does that give you? If it is already loaded then you should have Launch or Remove.
If it does not Launch then I would remove it.
Then I would copy the Folder
/home/john/.local/share/flatpak/repo
from the machine where Recorder is working to the non-working machine.
Now try installing Recorder again from Software Manager..

RIH - Thanks yet again - that has done the trick, and saved me a lot of trouble!
I did everything you said.
The terminal command "flatpak list" now shows:

john@insp620:~$ flatpak list
Name Application ID Version Branch Installation
Recorder ….alexkdeveloper.recorder 1.0.12 stable system
Mesa …ktop.Platform.GL.default 23.0.2 22.08 system
Mesa (Extra) …ktop.Platform.GL.default 23.0.2 22.08-extra system
Intel …top.Platform.VAAPI.Intel 22.08 system
openh264 …esktop.Platform.openh264 2.1.0 2.2.0 system
GNOME Application … org.gnome.Platform 44 system
Mint-Y-Aqua Gtk Th… …tk.Gtk3theme.Mint-Y-Aqua 3.22 system
john@insp620:~$

as it does on the other computers.
I hope that some time I will be able to help someone as much as you helped me!
