Cinnamon desktop keeps crashing and other weird behavior.

Post by Ozen »

Hello all!
I've had an issue for a few weeks now that I can't quite figure out. My desktop seems to be crashing and bugging out frequently. What generally happens is the bottom taskbar stops functioning. It'll freeze up or just lose all icons and lose functionality in both cases. The only reason I suspect it's the desktop process that's breaking is because one time I got a crash pop asking if I wish to terminate it or wait.

As for causes, it usually happens after putting the system into suspend mode, but that is normally most of the time and isn't every time. The only time I'm able to consistently cause the behavior is actually playing a videoplayer, such as youtube, in a firefox window, and then suspending the system. Other times it can happen after running a videogame.

There are other issues with the GUI here and there but this taskbar one is the main one I want to address. The other has to do with how when I right click stuff, that little menu doesn't always appear next to my cursor, but somewhere else on the screen. It's quite disparaging. I really don't know how to trouble shoot this issue properly. I don't know where to find the relevant logs or if I even need to go that far. Maybe I just need to reinstall some software?
Regardless, I'd like all of your help! Thanks in advance!
SPECS!

Your system's root partition is quite full.

Partition:
ID-1: / size: 915.32 GiB used: 798.79 GiB (87.3%) fs: ext4
dev: /dev/nvme0n1p2
ID-2: /boot/efi size: 511 MiB used: 6.1 MiB (1.2%) fs: vfat
dev: /dev/nvme0n1p1

For best performance, I suggest being below 75% and the lower the better.

Asking if you wish to terminate what process?

It's possible a newer kernel will also help with performance. The 5.19 kernel is available in Update Manager.

Instructions for upgrading to the 5.19 kernel:
  • Open Update Manager.
  • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
  • Make sure 5.19 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
  • Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

It sounds like you may have added an applet or extension that is not working well with the desktop.

Error messages related to the desktop are usually in the .xsession-errors file which is a hidden file in your home directory.

Maybe start with figuring out what is consuming all that space in / ( aka root )

1st guess... Timeshift snapshots in which stock settings...in which. target /run/timeshift

2nd. too many kernels. .

3rd. Maybe you ran a rsync command trying to backup /home to another drive and kept cancelling it in the middle of it ( not sure why but it began filling up my / partition ( which I Have set separately from /home and /boot ) and I wasn't even targeting the same physical drive with the rsync.

Beyond that, I apologize for I haven't anything better to offer at this moment.

The process it asks to terminate was literally called "desktop". As if desktop was a running application.

Also, it got worse, and stranger as well! Now when I run systemctl suspend I, instead of the taskbar breaking the screen just won't come back on! I know it's running but the screen stays black. It's not even glowing like it's connected, just pure black and off. Now the only time I can safely suspend at all is pressing the buttons manually on the desktop, and even that doesn't work smoothly everytime. (I.E pressing the mint logo in the bottom left, the red power button, and then suspend.)

I did get the newest linux kernel like you asked, and that hasn't changed anything from what I can tell.
I went ahead and uninstalled most of my applets and desklets that it would allow me to. The only thing I have now is a sticky notes applet.
Here's the logs from .xsession-errors
I see a critial warning around line 71, but nothing that sticks out to me. But I also don't know what I should really be looking for.
I also can't tell what the storage issue is. I don't think it's snapshot. I only see my weekly, monthly, and daily snapshots. I don't see a ton of duplicates or anything. How would I go about looking for "too many kernels"?

You have 25 flatpaks installed so you have a lot of software installed. That means one of your snapshots is probably significantly larger than one of mine because you have so much additional software installed.

To check for installed kernels, you can open Update Manager, select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue. Then look for how many kernels have "Installed" in the middle column. (The list that comes up is all the available kernels and not all of them are installed.)

What was the variety desktop you had installed? I am asking because I am not familiar with that software.

Code: Select all

I've been hitting the same problem, and slowly narrowing down the suspects.

I just have bare minimum installed on 32GB drive, 3GB swap, 13GB used, 13GB free, no flatpaks.

It always seems to involve Firefox & Notes while trying to switch between them or minimise/maximise/close window.

I noticed that Ozen also said "The only thing I have now is a sticky notes applet. "

The other factor that I'm really suspicious of is 'maximise window'. As I see it there are 3 levels to this? 1) I've put a custom desktop Keyboard Shortcut Ctrl-Super-Up to maximise window, 2) Firefox has it's own 'Maximise Window' F11, and 3) Many streaming services have their own 'Full Screen' option. I've no idea how they all fit together, but looks to me like plenty scope for trouble.

Last time I was on Notes and tried to hit Alt-Tab to go to Firefox, everything froze, then few seconds later 'Fallback mode' do you want to restart Cinnamon? - say Yes and the desktop restarts and restores without loss of anything, so that's good. (you can try out restarting Cinnamon anytime by right-clicking on empty space in the panel, Troubleshoot, Restart Cinnamon)

I'd be interested to know if someone gets same problem with Notes not installed.

Ozen.
I've had a more careful read of your posts and I'm pretty sure we're seeing exactly the same thing.

my log, which looks similar to yours (it's the "Window manager warning: Buggy client sent a _NET_ACTIVE_WINDOW message with a timestamp of 0" that is identical) is below. p.s. I don't have 'variety' and there's no mention of it in my log files.

I'm finding that it happens very rarely, maybe once every couple of days after thousands of window operations and I've not had any joy trying to replicate the fault reliably.

I still think it's Firefox/Notes that sometimes have a conflict over which windows they are using (or something), or maybe just Notes on its own. I'm using both of them constantly.

Next time you see it, have a more careful read of the error pop up message. I suspect it's asking if you want to Restart Cinnamon - if so, click 'Yes' - it just refreshes the windows (in layman's terms) and they come alive again for me as they were when it froze.

Once I get a better benchmark maybe I'll get rid of Notes for a while and see if it stops happening.

ok,

I've more or less figured out what it is, and can reproduce the problem within a couple of minutes, though would take bit of time to work out the exact sequence & timing.

It's nothing to do with Firefox.

Just Notes + any one other running app.

I'm getting regular crashes by using Alt-tab to switch between the 2 apps and hitting the desktop applet Notes icon (which toggles notes on/off) at about the same time. So the root cause is something like Alt-tab trying to select a window that no longer exists.

The first pic shows the error message that pops up - just clicking Yes is safe & you don't lose anything.

The second pic is System Monitor trace before, during & after the crash.

One solution that seems to do the job for me is to make sure 'Show in taskbar' in Notes Preferences is turned off.
