(Solved) Some menu items have stopped

Post by edwardj_meech »

I'm using Linux Mint 20.3 on a PC. I have just noticed that clicking 'Menu - Control Center - System Settings' does nothing. Also, 'Menu - Preferences - Screensaver'. These are just two - there are others. I found this problem because I wanted to change the time out of the screensaver. This is not something I want to do often so I have no idea how long it's been like this and in the grand scheme of things isn't important. But I suppose there is a setting somewhere that is causing it.
I have no problems with Mint or installed software - I keep the system updated.
Any Ideas any one?

Which desktop are you running? (From the name "Control Center" I think it's MATE maybe?)

Can you run those programs from the Terminal and post their error messages? I am not sure what the Terminal commands are for those though, since I don't use MATE... Maybe mate-screensaver?

That's weird. It says you are using Cinnamon, but I am not aware of any "Control Center" on Cinnamon.

Can you try launching these from the Terminal?

Code: Select all

cinnamon-settings

Code: Select all

cinnamon-settings screensaver
EDIT: Ah, I just found something called cinnamon-control-center which opens a weird simplified version of System Settings. I think this might be an old deprecated version of System Settings that got leftover maybe?

Hi,
Thanks for the prompt reply.
Cinnamon-settings Gives a response - 'No module named 'certifi'' Also Cinnamon-settings screensaver.
'cinnamon-control-center' gives the simple System setting window as you say.
How do I update cinnamon?

The Terminal shows the following - none of which I understand, while control-center is running.

Great - that has solved the problem. Maybe it happened during an update?
Thanks for your help.
