Linux Mint XFCE 21 (Latest) screen resolution, text size, icon size, display - broken! [Solved]

Post by ScarletMcLearn »

Hello.
Hope you are doing well, and thank you in advance for reading this.
Please feel free to skip ahead to the PROBLEMS or TRIED FIXES sections if that helps save your time.

I am using Linux Mint XFCE 21 (Latest version) on an ASUS Vivobook Laptop and running 2 External Monitors (using VGA Splitter) as Secondary Display.

Backstory:

The first time I had installed Linux Mint XFCE 20, it had some screen resolution, text size, icon size, button size, title bar and panel sizes, and display issues.

I had gone over this forum and resolved to solve them.

Today I changed my old VGA cable and plugged in VGA Extender connected by Ethernet Cable to my External Monitor.

Then the problems started happening -

1. The screen resolution has been completely broken with the VGA Extender and Ethernet Cable connecting to External Monitor

2. The text size, icon size, button size, title bar and panel sizes were all too small.

3. The display looks broken - as in stretched or breaking. Its a bit hard to explain, hence I am providing images shortly.

I went over this forum again and tried to fix it.

I tried several suggestions - changing font size options, scaling options, and resolution options.

But none of them were working.

Then I restarted my PC, and all the fonts became huge!
- I think Linux Mint XFCE was NOT rendering the changes until restart, and I thought it was not working, so set large values to test it. And after restart, everything went huge and now I cant even use my PC (cant navigate around PC or do anything - all the windows and buttons and options get cut off and flow out of screen due to their size!)

I first used Timeshift to go back to a previous version where things were working. But it seems Linux Mint XFCE kept track of the customization to display settings (font size, etc) and there was no change (everything was still huge).

I somehow managed to press ALT+SPACE and used the keyboard to select move and tried moving the windows and opening terminal.

From there I upgraded Linux Mint XFCE from 20 to 21 and installed all the latest updates (hoping it would undo the mistake). The upgrade was successful, but the broken settings which I had mistakenly saved were still in action (they were not erased by the upgrade).

I tried tweaking the settings and restarting every now and then, and managed to resolve a lot of the problems. But some of them are still remaining and I am having a hard time fixing them.

Some of the problems remaining:

1, Screen resolution is still broken / looks weird :
https://pasteboard.co/5pAuIg44jzgE.png

2. The Panel (Task bar) icon sizes are not consistent :
Some are too large, some are too small
https://pasteboard.co/fpjZdsyxKkQ7.png

3. The Start Menu Icons are huge:
https://pasteboard.co/ZrgAmsYcWyHL.png

4. The icons are huge globally:
https://pasteboard.co/PNwlXldC0YUI.png

5. All the panels are of broken sizes (either too large or too small):
https://pasteboard.co/cijVLeZVkUhR.png

6. The Title Bar, Title Bar Text and Title Bar Buttons - size is also not consistent (huge in some places, small in some):
https://pasteboard.co/DeyE4tdXZwGf.png
https://pasteboard.co/5EmbOhe4Wp3T.png

7. All Windows/Apps are opening in disproportionate / huge sizes - they are going out of the screen due to being so huge:
https://pasteboard.co/spfMKvZCI33Y.png

8. The notifications are also huge - the notification icon is huge, the text is tiny.

9. The Desktop Icons and Texts are tiny:

Some of the things I have tried tweaking:

1. Changing Size in Desktop > Right Click > Desktop Settings > Icons -
https://pasteboard.co/efl9bo53YDmV.png

2. Changing the Resolution in Start > Display > General -
https://pasteboard.co/756w7xWqdF4X.png

3, Changing the Font Size in Start > Window Manager > Style -
https://pasteboard.co/LabdD4RVpcQa.png

4. Changing the Font Size and Custom DPI Settings in Start > Appearance > Fonts -
https://pasteboard.co/OCdehBPeiCbm.png

5. Changing Row Size in Settings > Panel > Display -
https://pasteboard.co/fIWz7dIJAbth.png

6. Changing Size and DPI Settings in Start > KDE System Settings -
https://pasteboard.co/gtGVObjDLaU1.png

I have been trying all day to fix these issues, but have not been able to.

Please guide me how I can fix these. Your time and effort is greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Waiting eagerly for any solution or suggestion.

P.s. I am also adding the output of the following command

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxz
if it helps:

I have moved your topic to the Graphics Cards & Monitors forum which is where we usually handle screen resolution issues. Stickied to the top of that forum is Tips for Troubleshooting Graphics Issues (including external monitors not working) which explains many issues are because the graphics drivers are not installed or not installed correctly. There are examples of what a correct install inxi output will be.

Your computer's Nvidia drivers are not installed as you would want them to be. Nearly everything you did was trying to compensate for the fact the basics were not in place. While your output shows the Nvidia device driver was loaded, there is no nvidia display driver loaded. Nouveau is loaded instead of nvidia.

min: 640x480
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa Intel UHD Graphics 620 (KBL GT2)
v: 4.6 Mesa 22.2.5 direct render: Yes

Additionally, your output does not show a VGA port so I'm not sure what kind of cabling you are using.

To fix the nvidia/nouveau issue, try the solution in this post.

Ethernet is used for connecting devices on a network. Your external monitor should be connected directly your computer. I don't understand what type of cable you are describing. :?

The graphics drivers are loaded when you boot the computer. I suspect the drivers are an issue which is why you didn't see changes until you rebooted.

The listed output in inxi looks weird too. res: 1536x1152 We need to get the correct display driver loaded before being able to address the resolution.

The rest of your issue could be a variety of problems, but let's get the correct graphics drivers loaded and see what issues remain after that.

I would also like you to provide a link to more information about the cable you are using to attach the monitor to the computer. I suspect that may also be part of the problem.

Thank you for your suggestion.
I tried fixing the Nvidia Driver, but I think was messing up.
One of the mods - Larry - suggested I try a new user account.
I created one and most of the issues were fixed in it.
Still a few issues remain.
Will open a new post for this as that is purely graphics card related.
Thank you again!

Display hazy, blurry, stretched, broken - does not look okay - Linux Mint XFCE 21 on ASUS VIVOBOOK with NVIDIA GP108M.

Hello.

Hope you are doing well.

I am using Linux Mint XFCE on ASUS Vivobook.

The display is not looking good - blurry / stretched / broken.

I had installed NVIDIA Drivers based on the instructions I read on this forum, but its still not working.

I am providing the output of the following command below:
Input 1:

Code: Select all

sudo inxi --full
Input 2:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxrz
Please suggest me what I should do to resolve it without destroying my entire device/display - I only have one PC and I don't have any way to debug it if the display goes down completely. I would appreciate if you can guide me in a way where that wont happen.

Thank you for your time!

I tried fixing the Nvidia Driver, but I think was messing up.
One of the mods - Larry - suggested I try a new user account.
There are no mods on this forum named Larry.
ScarletMcLearn wrote: Sun May 28, 2023 4:28 amStill a few issues remain.
Will open a new post for this as that is purely graphics card related.
If you would have read the post I made, you would know this topic is already in the Graphic section and I gave you advice for graphics. Please stop creating duplicate posts.

ScarletMcLearn wrote: Sun May 28, 2023 7:04 amThe display is not looking good - blurry / stretched / broken.

I had installed NVIDIA Drivers based on the instructions I read on this forum, but its still not working.
Please provide the output of

Code: Select all

cat /etc/modules
and the url which gets returned when you run the following command:

Code: Select all

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | nc termbin.com 9999

This output says you did not go to the linked post I gave you and run that advice. I will copy and paste the information from that linked post here:
Try this method to load the Nvidia kernel modules a little earlier in the boot process.

Use this command to open the modules file: xed admin:///etc/modules

Add this at the bottom:

Code: Select all

nvidia
nvidia-drm
nvidia-modeset
After adding those lines, save the file and then reboot the computer and provide the output of

Code: Select all

inxi -Gxxx
The information in the url (the Xorg log) seems to match the inxi output. Nvidia is not loading probably because nouveau is getting in ahead of it. The change in /etc/modules above should correct that.

Could you please explain what instructions you followed?

One should open Driver Manager and install the driver. That does not appear to be what you did. Not only did you install CUDA, ncompute, nsight, and profiler, but you also are missing your nvidia-prime-applet which means you likely tried removing Nvidia driver files using wildcards in the terminal.

Your nvidia output appears to be missing packages normally installed. I've not seen those files missing in other outputs so I'm not sure what you may have done.

There was an error in the Xorg log which I presumed was due to nouveau loading first, but now I'm wondering if it is because of what packages are installed.

Code: Select all

[ 11.481] (EE) [drm] Failed to open DRM device for (null): -2
Do you need CUDA, ncompute, nsight, and profiler? I'm asking so I can figure the best way to try and get the proper packages loaded.

Apologies for the delayed response. We are having massive internet outage in our area.

I had installed Nvidia Drivers using the Driver Manager.

Later on I also installed CUDA following the guide on Tensorflow documentation.

I believe there it mentioned to remove some of the defaults - I had followed those instructions.

I don't need CUDA and the other packages you mentioned.

Please suggest what should be the best way without completely going blind from display drivers being broken.

I'm going to have you remove packages and then re-install. Hopefully, the outage will cooperate.

I found this post with output and everything from nvidia-prime to the bottom is missing from your install including the screen-resolution-extra and xserver-xorg-video-nvidia-525 packages.

To clean up your system and install just the Nvidia driver, I recommend the following steps
  • Remove all nvidia packages by running sudo apt-get purge *nvidia*
  • Re-install the nvidia-prime-applet (which is actually a Linux Mint file) by running sudo apt-get install nvidia-prime-applet
  • Reboot the computer. (The open-source nouveau driver should load and your system is using Intel anyhow so there should not be problems.)
  • Install the Nvidia-525 driver by running apt install nvidia-driver-525
  • Reboot the computer.
That should load the nvidia display driver and we can check with the output of inxi -Gxxx.

Great!
I performed the steps you mentioned and the latest output as per your suggested command is :

The nvidia display driver is now loaded. You should also have an nvidia-prime-applet in your panel (probably looks like an Intel icon?).
ScarletMcLearn wrote: Sat May 27, 2023 11:46 amI am using Linux Mint XFCE 21 (Latest version) on an ASUS Vivobook Laptop and running 2 External Monitors (using VGA Splitter) as Secondary Display.

Today I changed my old VGA cable and plugged in VGA Extender connected by Ethernet Cable to my External Monitor.
Do you have a link to a description of this cable and any adapters you are using?

The reason I am asking is because the inxi output indicates all external ports are connected to the Intel GPU and there are no VGA ports on the laptop.

Graphics:
Device-1: Intel UHD Graphics 620 vendor: ASUSTeK driver: i915 v: kernel
ports: active: DP-1 off: eDP-1 empty: HDMI-A-1,HDMI-A-2 bus-ID: 00:02.0

chip-ID: 10de:1d10 class-ID: 0302

The output only shows one monitor which is connected through a displayport (DP) which to me would indicate you are using some type of adapter? Adapters can cause problem because they may not let all the monitor details pass through to the computer so the computer knows what is attached.

Monitor-1: DP-1 res: 1536x1152 hz: 60 size: N/A modes: max: 1024x768
min: 640x480

The Xorg log showed both the laptop display and the DP-1 with screens connected. (However, there was only EDID info printed for the laptop display.)

Code: Select all

[ 11.844] (II) modeset(0): EDID for output eDP-1

Do you have the laptop display disabled in the Display app? (that's what the inxi data seems to indicate.)

What are the make and model of the external monitors and what are the connection types at each end.
