[Solved] LM21.1: Probs with Wacom Pen

Hi Folks!

The Object is a Fujitsu Lifebook T730.
This is a Notebook equipped with a turn- and flipable 14"Touchscreen (1280x800), which can be transformed into a Tab.
It also has a "Wacom Pen" which can emulate a mouse and control the cursor on a distance of approx. 3-5mm from the screen (no direct touching necessary).
This Notebook was running on LM20.3 and everything worked like a charm.

Yesterday I made a clean Install of LM21.1 - and the Pen isn't working any longer! :(
Fortunately I made a Clonezilla-Image of the System, so I could revert everything.
Pen is working again like nothing happend. :D

What can be the Problem? What can I do to make the Pen work on LM21.1?

What desktop environment were you using with 21.1?

I ask, because when I switched to Linux last month, it was because a recent Windows 10 update was causing problems with my Wacom tablet and pen. I started with Linux Mint 21.1 and Mate, but while the pen was behaving better, it was still not behaving 100%. I was advised to switch to Cinnamon instead of Mate, and the pen is now better than ever. It was never this responsive under Windows!

There's probably a way I could have avoided a full reinstall, but given how new I was (and still am) to Linux Mint, it was just easier to download the new ISO and start over.

I'm using Cinnamon on both Versions and in 20.3 the Pen is working fine, on 21.1 it isn't working at all.

Is the pen showing up if you run xinput?
Is the pen showing up in the Graphics Tablet app?

The Difference is directly visible in the Virtual core pointer-section.

What can I do to get the Pen working in 21.1? Which Graphics Tablet App do you mean?

Cinnamon has an app called Graphics Tablet. I am not sure if your screen registers as such or maybe just the pen shows up?

Is secure boot enabled? You can check by running the following in a terminal

Hi!

This Machine is from 2010! It already has a TPM, but no UEFI or Secure Boot Option in BIOS!
I think, the FUJ02e7-Driver is the Answer to this Problem.
How can I activate it in 21.1? Or is it not incorporated in this Version?

Please open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click the Copy button in the lower right and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware.

Isn't that a Windows driver? You cannot add a Windows driver to Linux Mint.

I went through the Wacom documentation and I don't see where anything was removed so I do not know why it might not be working in LM21 versions.

Is /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/70-wacom.conf the same for both installs? I don't have an LM21 install available right now, but there is a line in that file for LM20.3 that mentions FUJ02e7

The Beginning seems to be identical to LM20.3, but, as can be seen, the driver is unloaded due to an Error in Communication between the Hardware and the OS in LM21.1 (see the markers in both Files).
What can I do to make this thing work?

I did a search on that message and found a topic from 2009 where someone indicated they had the problem on a cold boot, but if they restarted X Server then it worked. You can restart X Server with Ctl-Alt-Backspace. (You will lose anything you have open when you restart X Server so keep that in mind.)

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find recent information about such as issue. Let us know if restarting X Server works (or at least makes some changes to the messages in Xorg log.

You could test to see if the issue is kernel related by installing the 5.15 kernel on your LM20.3 install. You can do that in Update Manager. Let us know if you need directions for doing that.

No changes on a warm Boot of the X-Server, neither in behaviour, nor in the Log. :(

Any more Ideas?

Looks like LM21-Versions (21 & 21.1) have some more Probs: FJS Esprimo Mobile V6555 - Nvidia Graphics (Geforce 8200) and Chipset (MCP79) are not recognized and Driver Manager insists that there are no Drivers necessary (you can see from screen resolution that this is wrong...).
Notebook will only run in recovery mode with wrong screen resolution.
But I have found a workaround for this: install LM20.3, install the recommended Nvidia-Driver via the Driver Manager, reboot, update everything and perform a 2-Step-Upgrade to LM21.1 afterwards (21->21.1). Worked w/o Errors for me.

There may be a way to customize one of your files, but I'll have to see if I can find an explanation on how to do that.

The inxi information you posted in this topic shows the computer does not have Nvidia graphics. :?

If you are talking about a different computer, Nvidia stopped supporting drivers for the Geforce 8200 quite a while ago (Nvidia-340 was the last one in 2019) so the only supported option for LM21 versions is the open-source nouveau driver. That is why Driver Manager tells you there are no drivers for it. Nvidia-340 is a proprietary driver. There is no way for Ubuntu/Linux Mint to update the driver so it works properly on LM21.

The Nvidia-340 works properly with the 5.4 kernel and the X.Org version in LM20 versions. That driver went end of life before LM21 was released. People have run into issues trying to use the Nvidia-340 on LM21 versions with the newer kernel and X.Org because Nvidia never designed that driver to work with them.

I found someone with similar output who noticed a change between versions of Fedora Serial Wacom problem after update. Looks like it is the same wacom version 1.0.0 that your output shows for LM21. LM20.3 is using version 0.39.0. Unfortunately, there is no response to the Fedora topic.

Apparently, support for serial devices was dropped Keep the serial code alive? #197.

I had a bunch of other information typed and I hit something and lost it. :( What I recall from what I lost is you would have to manually compile a driver to use it.

I think the best advice is to just keep using your LM20.3 install.

Yeah, you're right: the ESPRIMO is a different Notebook and the next "Patient".
The Problem was, that even the "Nouveau"-Driver was not loaded and so the screen was only at 1280x720 instead of 1280x800.
The respective Sys-Report stated N/A in that field.
So I tried 20.3 and the (recommended) Nvidia-Driver in the Driver-Manager.
Afaics, there seems to be no issues, but Time will tell...

Thx for your kind help, but I never had written nor compiled a driver in Linux (my last Compilingprocess was in the 68k-era back in late 80ies on an ATARI MSTE).
I know how to write Programs in Basic/Pascal/Python and Assembler (Z80 and 68000), but the last Programming-Project was a quite a long time ago and my Knowledge of C/C++/C# is near 0.

I believe the Linux libwacom site has directions, but what you would be doing would be creating a driver using the older files. You already have the older files with LM20.3 without having to do anything special.

I don't do development work for Wacom drivers to understand all the ins and outs of all the components. I also do not have your hardware to do any kind of testing. You are welcome to research it yourself to see what you can find.

I will try that asap.
But for now, I tested LMDE4 and LMDE5: the Pen is supported in both Versions!
What the Hell is the Prob in LM21.1, that this is not working?
LM20.3 is working, so are both LMDE-Versions.
For me, this looks like a veritable Bug in LM21.1. :evil:

I spent many hours (yes, literally hours) researching this issue. For you to come back swearing saying it is a bug in LM21.1 is quite disappointing. I already posted information which indicates this problem is happening in Fedora and that support for serial drivers was dropped.

The serial code inside the driver is effectively unused and definitely
untested. It's been a decade since the last serial devices came out and few of
those will be in active use, the few that are are likely supported by
the inputattach code we keep in place for now.
The inputattach aspect was one of the things I was researching and lost when I had the glitch. If I recall correctly, someone tried commenting out the first line in what is /lib/udev/rules.d/60-inputattach.rules, but I do not remember the details. I had gone from one link to another to another and doubt I could find it again.

Both LMDE versions and LM20.3 all use older kernels and older packages than LM21 does so it is not surprising the older software works better with your older hardware. LM20.3 is supported for another 22 months so you have an option that works for quite a while into the future.
