Gave up waiting for root file system device

Post by Sultan »

Hi everyone,

I create this post because I have a problem. After installing Mint, the PC reboots and then comes :

Code: Select all

Gave up waiting for root file system device. Common problems
-Boots args (cat/proc/cmdline)
-Check rootdelay= (Did the system wait long enough?)
-Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; is /dev)
Alert! Uuid=925................... Does not exist. Dropping to a shell!
I'm a beginner with this OS (it starts well  ).
I tried Ubuntu too, same problem. For me, it's a problem with the PC I'm trying to install it on.
Maybe a BIOS manipulation...

Thank you very much

Can you boot the installer USB again, try the live system (I forget the exact words) rather than just running the installer, open a terminal and enter the command lsblk -fm and post that. And can you confirm that the output does contain the UUID (filesystem ID) that the boot process says is missing.

The output from inxi -Fxxxrz that deepakdeshp asks for might be helpful as well, even if from the installer rather than the installed OS.

I'm having difficulty reading the lsblk output, but it looks to to me as though you have two disks ~500GB and ~1TB that have unknown filesystem types. I don't see any sign of a disk that may have been formatted with a Linux compatible filesystem.
Sorry, but I have no idea what's going on there.

I'm wondering if it would just save more time in the long run to just start over and reinstall Linux Mint fresh and clean, but keep it simple. no special sauce..no formatting in the installation wizard nor gparted.

Afterwards and you can confirm you're able to boot normally to a fresh Linux Mint Desktop. grab a separate physical drive and do a Timeshift backup targeting that separate drive.

In fact anytime you do a new major settings adjustment or play with something completely new or that you don't understand, create a new Timeshift snapshot and entitle it something coherent to " before trying this new xy setting or program". That's what I've done and it's saved my bacon every time when crap goes south.

I'm not saying you did anything wrong, just putting a reasonable thought process out there.

Not only codes result on terminal are needed also you must copy and paste codes on terminal, do not write (see codes are inxi -Fxxxz with F capital letter not lower case f as you wrote).

I thought problems on accessing hardware/BIOS RAID volume were solved, at least on installing LM 21.1, but it looks like they are still after installing.

You can try on that busybox <initramfs> shell (look here) running kpartx -a /dev/mapper/isw_difeggidjh_Volume0 then exit to boot and do as indicated on that link.

If on Linux Live USB session run following codes, so you will be able to access your RAID volume partitioning (by example with Disks).

Code: Select all

sudo kpartx -a /dev/mapper/isw_difeggidjh_Volume0
Post back those and following codes result.

Code: Select all

sudo parted -l
ls /dev/mapper/
sudo dmraid -ay -vvv -d
cat /proc/mdstat
Once you can access RAID volume partitions you will be able to mount, chroot and run update-initramfs -u in order you can boot installed system w/o that problem (details on next post after seeing codes result).
