My laptop has no sound

Post by avficus »

Hi all.

My new laptop has no sound with internal speakers, no sound with headphones with 3,5 mm plug.

I read these tips at viewtopic.php?t=389383 and installed Intel sof-bin drivers as suggested. I am not sure if driver installation went right.
Installed also 6.1-oem kernel as suggested.
I tried these tricks at https://itsfoss.com/fix-sound-ubuntu-1304-quick-tip/
And some of these at viewtopic.php?p=2334032&hilit=no+sound+ ... l#p2334032

No success.

Code: Select all

~$ inxi -SMA
System:
  Host: onn-Linux-Mint Kernel: 5.15.0-73-generic x86_64 bits: 64
Desktop: Cinnamon 5.6.8 Distro: Linux Mint 21.1 Vera
Machine:
  Type: Laptop Mobo: N/A model: N/A serial: <superuser required>
    UEFI: American Megatrends v: CC-BI-13.3-Y116GRX200-GF56A-218-C
    date: 06/23/2021
Audio:
Device-1: Intel Celeron/Pentium Silver Processor High Definition Audio
    driver: snd_hda_intel
  Sound Server-1: ALSA v: k5.15.0-73-generic running: yes
  Sound Server-2: PulseAudio v: 15.99.1 running: yes
  Sound Server-3: PipeWire v: 0.3.48 running: yes
aplay -l
aplay: device_list:274: no soundcards found..

I had also driver "sof-audio-pci-intel-apl" instead of "snd_hda_intel", but above tricks did not helped, no matter which of them was in use. Driver changed when I change one audio related setting in UEFI. With 6.1 kernel there is again "sof-audio-pci-intel-apl".

Sound Settings shows on Output tab "Dummy Output" and Output volume is set 90%. Sounds tab volume is set 40%.

I don't want to use any external sound card or device, because I don't listen music with my laptop. I need sound e.g. for listening news.

Hopefully someone can give a help.

Welcome to the forum, avficus.

Please open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click the Copy button in the lower right and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware.

Sound issue are very much hardware dependent so we need to know what the laptop is. An output of N/A N/A is not very helpful so you really need to supply the full inxi info.

I see in your other topic you list a laptop with the Intel Celeron N4020 CPU and a chip ID: 8086:3198 for the sound.

If that is the same laptop as the one in this topic, then your computer likely has the ES8336 card and support for it did not even start until the 5.19 kernel so a 5.15 will never work. Based on what I found, it's possible you may need to go to using a mainline kernel to get something new enough to have the fixes for your computer.

However, you need to give more information so we would know what is appropriate advice.

Sadly, there is also N/A fields.
This laptop brand and model is Onn. WY133A.
This is unknown brand for me.
I have a doubt that Chuwi could be a same.

At a moment I have Kernel 6.1.0-1013-oem x86_64 installed, together with 5.15.0-73.
Both works well. Only difference I noticed that with that newer Kernel there is stripes and bars flashing on the screen, if I unable DSP (Digital Signal Processor) setting from UEFI. DSP setting is sub menu for HD Audio menu.

This chip-ID is the same one several others have. Some have been able to get sound, while one person is still having issues.

You need to use the newer kernel and will likely have to add some additional firmware. With the 6.1-oem kernel loaded, what is the output of

Code: Select all

journalctl -k | grep -Ei "ALSA|HDA|sof[-]|HDMI|snd[_-]|sound|hda.codec|hda.intel"
That will let us know what firmware would be needed.

Or both Chuwi and Onn use the same parts.

I have not heard of others having flashing on the screen with the Intel Celeron N4020. I do not know why DSP might relate to that. :?

This was all of the output? There is usually more, but the fact the driver is changing when you change the DSP setting might be the reason.

What is the output of aplay -l?

And you currently have it abled?

According to what I found, DSP = Digital Signal Processing.

Yes, that was all of the output. I just double checked it.

~$ aplay -l
aplay: device_list:274: no soundcards found...

Correct, currently I have DSP enabled in UEFI.
UEFI doesn't explain DSP, but I also think it means Digital Signal Processing.

I hope this is allowed to attach, here is a photo of HD-Audio settings in UEFI:

The screenshot you posted has "Audio DSP Compliance Mode" showing as "Non-UAA". Change it to UAA (the second option) and then post the output of inxi -Axxx and

Code: Select all

journalctl -k | grep -Ei "ALSA|HDA|sof[-]|HDMI|snd[_-]|sound|hda.codec|hda.intel"
If that does not show new information, I have an idea of something to try with the 5.15 kernel.

Go back and disable DSP so the snd_hda_intel driver is used.

Then what I would like you to try is to boot into the 5.15 kernel and use the snd-intel-dspcfg.dsp_driver=2 kernel parameter. As per this post and the next, that should force the SST driver rather than the SOF driver. I don't know if that will work because I'm not really sure that is what your computer uses, but without any sound card showing up, all we can do is guess at this point. :|

To boot into the 5.15 kernel, bring up the grub menu, select the Advanced Options, and then select a 5.15 kernel. If you do not normally see the grub menu, repeatedly tap the escape key during boot to bring up the grub menu for your UEFI boot computer. Then open Update Manager and remove the 6.1-oem kernel.
  • Open Update Manager.
  • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
  • Make sure 6.1 is selected on the left panel and then click the option on the right panel with "Installed" in the middle column.
  • Click the "Remove" button.
With the 6.1-oem kernel removed, your system should automatically boot into the 5.15 kernel.

You can use the following information How to add a kernel parameter to temporarily or permanently add the kernel parameter. When you add it temporarily, it adds it only for that current boot cycle, so if, for any reason, it seems to cause issues or it does not work, all you need to do is reboot to clear it. If you need more details than that topic provides, just let us know.

I am not sure what all the BIOS/UEFI options are supposed to do, but let's see if the kernel parameter changes any of the output.

I disabled DSP, but now it is not snd_hda_intel driver which loads, it is snd_soc_skl.

Code: Select all

~$ inxi -SMA
System:

  Sound Server-3: PipeWire v: 0.3.48 running: yes
Here is evidence how I booted with kernel 5.15 and modified grub:

Code: Select all

And what is the output of

Code: Select all

journalctl -k | grep -Ei "ALSA|HDA|sof[-]|HDMI|snd[_-]|sound|hda.codec|hda.intel"
Do you remember which setting had the snd_hda_intel? Maybe I misunderstood what you wrote earlier?

You have understood totally right. Driver snd_hda_intel is loaded when DSP is unabled. It is kernel parameter "snd-intel-dspcfg.dsp_driver=2" together with unabled DSP in UEFI, which loads driver snd_soc_skl. I checked it twice.

That's fine. That is not a factor in this issue anyhow.

The messages indicate NHLT table not found so it would seem non-UAA setting is needed for those.

That was not what I was expecting, but your system has a lot of BIOS/UEFI options that I don't think others have.

If you select F3 Optimize defaults setting, what are the defaults? (It may be easiest to just post screenshot(s).)

Try that setting with the 5.15 kernel and this kernel parameter snd-intel-dspcfg.dsp_driver=1. It's my understanding that normally forces the system to legacy sound, but your system has so many options that I'm not sure what it will do. :|

I did. No sound and Sound app still shows dummy output (but dummy output is not written in English, it's written in Finnish).

Re: My laptop has no sound

What about this https://github.com/thesofproject/linux/ ... 36-support
Could there be a solution?
First link on that page https://thesofproject.github.io/latest/ ... 36-support
I run that ‘alsa-info’ command and one line under title "ACPI Device Status Information" was "/sys/bus/acpi/devices/ESSX8336:00/status 15".

I feel that this might concern to this issue.
But I don't understand what I have to do to fix this.

What do you think? Could this be a solution?
How to fix this?

Re: My laptop has no sound

I have been searching a solution by myself a lot.

When I run commands below (booted kernel 6), I feel that there is contradiction between "snd-sof-pci-intel-apl" and "sof-audio-pci-intel-apl".
Then there is one line "snd_sof_pci_intel_apl".
I mean that why some starts as "snd-sof" and others as "sof-audio"? If a driver name starts as "sof-audio" and a module name as "snd-sof", can this be right?
I have to say that I don't understand these things, but anyway I noticed this. Could this lead some solution?

Here is examples of outputs, where I noticed this possible contradiction:
