[SOLVED] Davinci Resolve 18.1 - Fusion Freezes Everytime (after working perfectly few days ago...)

Post by Linuxien »

[SOLVED]
I formated and resintalled linux mint from scratch, my ISO was linux mint 21.1

Hi !

I've always used Davinci Resolve 17.3 without any problems.

After a long pause, i've decided to install the newest version (18.1).

Everything worked perfectly (including the Fusion Tab).

Now i don't know why, as soon as I open Fusion it automatically freezes and i have to htop > sigkill the task (i've waited for 30 min max).

I've tried everything :
  • Touching the settings
  • Force OpenGL
  • Enable "auto" mode for GPU preferences
  • Uninstall from the installer
  • Uninstall from command Line
  • Manually delete all the files on the root files so that it wont reuse older parameters (don't recall the exact filepath)
But i'm still facing the same problem, each time I open Fusion it crashes...

One thing I might notice to be different though is that now, as soon as i open DR it promptes me with two messages :
  • Please update cache location for this project, current location is offline or not reachable //Cacheclip
  • Please update capture location for this project, current location is offline or not reachable //Capture
Earlier when i launched normally (just double clicking the icon) i was also prompted the following error message
  • The GPU failed to perform image processing because of an error. Eror Code : 999
I had to right click > Open with NVIDIA to not having this code, and sometimes even doing that when i was mooving inside the timeline i could see huge glitch on the video preview...

I've posted on the Forum but unfortunately there is nothing new ...

So I might have 2 main questions :
  • Do anybody knows how to solve this issue ? It worked perfectly before, so i'm thinking that it might be about some driver update or something that didn't went properly i guess (i do not remember what i've done previous to this, i've tried to Timeshift from a date where everything worked and nothing hapened, i've timeshift with and without a bootable USB key, nothing changed...)
  • If i need to do a hard uninstall (harder than i've already tried) can somebody explain me how to do it ?

Does this mean you posted on the BlackMagic forum?

That is odd. That sometimes points to the issue being a hardware change.

My first guess would be to try an older Nvidia driver, but I presume a Timeshift snapshot would have had one. Maybe try the Nvidia-525 driver?

Have you always used a low-latency kernel?

Hi !

Yes on the blackmagic Forum with logs. I thought that as I was using Studio i could have them give me support but they've told me on the phone that unfortunately they only offer support for CentOS :(

I did no hardware change unfortunately (i'm using a laptop).

Also i've tried all the available Nvidia drivers (if Ican recall correctly i'm pretty sure i've even tested the open source one).
Have you always used a low-latency kernel?
I didn't knew at the time but it seems like i was always on a non LTS, non Low latency kernel.

After doing eveyrhting i could (changing drivers, Timeshift, complete clean before reinstalling, etc.) i thought about trying to move to a LTS low latency.

But i've tried both the low latency and the normal latency and unfortunately the result are the same...

What i did not try though was to use my USB bootable key to try to install nvidia on a bottable install and then maybe check if the issue is still hapenning on a virgin instal, do you think it's a good idea ?

What's frustrating is nowing that it was perfectly working before, making me think that it's a solvable problem but i don't know how to do it

Yes, officially, they only support CentOS. However, I've helped enough people with DaVinci Resolve that I've spent quite a bit of time on the BlackMagic forum and know most people using BlackMagic on Linux-based distros are not using CentOS. They are using other Linux-based distros.

Unfortunately, It is not possible to do that because one must reboot the computer for the Nvidia proprietary drivers to load and you can not reboot the ISO live session of Linux Mint. You would have to do a complete fresh install to test that theory.

How did you install DaVinci Resolve? Is there the possibility an update came through for it that might have caused the change to happen?

When I did a search on Fusion freezes, I discovered it is apparently a common problem across many versions going back years. Considering you had it working, I figured none of those solutions would apply, but maybe you will find a tip that works for you.

Ok that's unfortunate ! Maybe one day they'll support mint ? (I don't know if it's the most commonly used distro thought but it would be great !)

Ok well that would be a problem...

Would you be ok to share with me the URL of your search results ? I've tried either blackmagic forum and Google itself but everything I found is people telling ways to install Davinci by converting the installer into another extension file (which i'm not sure will change anything...)

Maybe you've stumbled upon topics that i might not have found ?

Usually, companies are more likely to support Debian or Ubuntu and when they do those work in Linux Mint.

I ran the searches again today. I did a search on Davinci Fusion freezing and this DaVinci Resolve Crashes in Fusion Tab (2023 Fixes!), but it seems to be more Windows specific. This video is from four years ago and is an older version How To Fix Fusion Tab Not Responding, Crashed, Or Blank In Davinci Resolve so I don't know what might still apply. (That also is Windows.)

Davinci Fusion freezing, linux brought up this Davinci Resolves Fusion Titles Crash Linux - How to Fix the Error in Ubuntu. That looks like it might be helpful, although I don't know that is explains why version 17 would have worked for you.

If I search on Blackmagic Fusion freezing then I get a lot of hits from the Blackmagic forum.

Here is an older link DaVinci Resolve keep freezing, but at least one person in it mentions using version 17 which you said worked well for you.

When I searched on Blackmagic Fusion Freezing, linux I found what appears to be your system, but I'm not familiar enough with the app to be able to read the logs to help you.
