I'm using Cinnamon. I've restarted the laptop at least once, to no avail. I dual-boot Windows. I'm sure the sound works on Windows, though I can't check right now because I just sent my laptop out for repair due to RAM death and I am currently locked out of Windows due to BitLocker issues (tech hates me).
pavucontrol
shows Dummy Output only. Under Configuration there are various profiles for HDA NVidia but selecting them does nothing to fix audio.inxi -Axxx

It looks like the section titled "Sound Open Firmware" on the megathread forum link above is most relevant, but I'd like to get some input but I go down some rabbit hole... Especially as I am on LMDE, not normal Linux Mint.
Is it looking like I will need to update the kernel, or wait for a newer one? If I upgrade the kernel, is there anything I need to worry about in terms of compatibilities? It's not something I've done before; I assume it's simple-ish to do.
