<SOLVED> I cannot start terminal in LMDE 6

Post by senjoz »

Yesterday I installed LMDE 6. After installation everything was okay. I updated the operating system, made some graphic user interface customization, installed GParted, trash-cli, powerstat and htop. I de-installed asian fonts, openjdk, orka, flatpak and speech-dispatcher. Today I booted to LMDE 6 and I could not start the terminal. I only got a busy mouse cursor. Other (GUI) applications work okay. If I go to tty and check journalctl log, I get next

Code: Select all

[ 17.279377] flbu727 pipewire-pulse[739]: mod.rt: Can't find org.freedesktop.portal.Desktop. Is xdg-desktop-portal running?

If I run in tty sudo systemctl start gnome-terminal-server.service i get in journalctl log

Code: Select all

[ 1095.973461] flbu727 systemd[721]: Failed to start gnome-terminal-server.service - GNOME Terminal Server.
I reinstalled gnome-terminal and gnome-terminal-data. After rebooting, the terminal still does not start. Does anybody have an idea what is wrong? I did not make a timeshift snapshot jet, therefore I cannot restore the previous operating system state.

I suggest to create a new user account (through Users & Groups), log out and log in to the new account and try if the terminal works fine from there. If so, the problem most likely is with your .bashrc or .profile files. Copy the default .bashrc and .profile from /etc/skel/ back to your home directory and then when you log in again to your own account it should work fine. Press Ctrl+H in file manager to toggle showing hidden files like these.

Else it may be a setting you changed in the terminal preferences. Try running gnome-terminal --preferences from the run dialog (Alt+F2) and see if you made some error there. The most common cause is change on the Command tab on the Profile preferences. You shouldn't have custom command enabled here.

Thank you, xenopeek, for the suggestions! I already tried with a new user account. That did not solve the problem.

Somewhere on the Arch forum I noticed a similar problem. Mentioned was bad settings for locales. I checked settings in Languages. There was only English US. I remember that after installation I added Slovenian language and set Region and Time format to Slovenian. Now there was no Slovenian language. I reinstalled the Slovenian language and set the Region and Time format to Slovenian. After that, Terminal starts normally. Maybe when I deinstalled asian fonts something went wrong.

Thanks for the solution.

I had the same problem with Finnish language and also found out the language wasn't installed.
It would be great if the set language was checked automatically being installed correctly, I think this problem was due after an upgrade.
I know this isn't as easy to implement as is sounds (technically), but I still want to bring this suggestion to the table.

I noticed some weird effects also in other distributions when selecting the US English language for interface and Slovenian for locales.
