It's ridiculous that you're forced to make a snapshot.
It should be a users choice, not dictated by the developers

No one is "forced to make a snapshot". There is an option in the menu to continue without making a snapshot, but hopefully, you are making some type of system/disk backup before continuing.

The How to upgrade to LMDE 6 blog post states in the Notes section, "Although not recommended, you can skip the snapshot requirement by disabling it in the preferences."

Personally, I would like to say thanks for this option (force to make snapshot). If it wasn't for the requirement (or it wouldn't look like it), I wouldn't have taken a snapshot of the system. Since the update went wrong BUT I made a snapshot, as required, I could easily return to the previous 5th version.
