[SOLVED] After updated to LMDE6 system freezes occasionally

Post by Jyrki »

Hi!

After updated my system from LMDE5 to LMDE6 system freezes occasionally about every 2 or 3 days. Before update system was very stable. I can't find specific situation when the system is freezing, except than it seems somehow to be related to the system load. However, the system does not always freeze when the load is high. Sometime I can move mouse cursor, when the system in freeze, sometimes mouse cursor is stuck.

When the system is freeze, ALT+F2 for Cinnamon restart, CTRL+ALT+backspace to restart X11, or CTRL+ALT+F1 for open console window does nothing.

Memory tests run with no errors.

Any help available?

FYI: I installed kernel version 5.10 to see, if it matters.

Installing old kernels from previous versions usually is not a good idea. That kernel was not meant to work with the current Xorg/Mesa/graphics stack.

How many minutes do you wait before you decide the system is frozen?

Is there a possibility of data transfer happening in the background at the time of these freezes?

I'm in a similar situation.

My computer has frozen twice today, for no reason I can identify. Neither time was high or any unusual usage. (One time I was just reading a website, no video or anything. The other time I was playing Widelands.)

I'm pretty new to Mint, so I don't know what information to offer that might help find the problem. But I'm think that if it happens again I'll use timeshift to roll back to something earlier to (hopefully) get the stability back.

[edit]
I'm not the OP, but I figure I'd respond to this:
How many minutes do you wait before you decide the system is frozen?

In my case, basically no time at all. The mouse and keyboard instantly became totally unresponsive. It's very clear something is wrong. I probably waited a couple of minutes of just pressing ctrl+alt+backspace and ctrl+alt+del before holding the power button to force a hard shutdown, but I'm very confident that the computer would not have recovered by itself. There was no data transfer happening, at least, I certainly wasn't doing anything that would request or require a data transfer. I suppose in the second instance there could have been an auto-save from the game or something, but certainly nothing major.

Note: when frozen, the num-lock light on my keyboard no longer would toggle. That's a standard test I use to see if my computer is *really* frozen. If numlock doesn't turn on or off anymore, then I figure nothing is going to work. It's not just a graphics problem or whatever. It's all over.

I waited at least couple of minutes every time. Last time I waited about 10 minutes. The system was clearly frozen every time. Last time REISUB didn't nothing.

I found these from syslog. There was "backintime" running at this time. There is lots of these "data out submit err -22" and " CDB: Write(16)" lines:

Update:

System freezes totally also with kernel 5.10. This time there was "Timeshift" running. Going back to latest kernel. This time there was no coredump in syslog, but only these from the time when the system froze:

I am not familiar with how "backintime" works, but even before the data out errors you mention, there is a cinnamon-subpro proces which segfaults.

Code: Select all

2023-10-11T22:33:33.579036+03:00 jyrki-ws1 kernel: [127719.509350] cinnamon-subpro[197644]: segfault at 18 ip 00000000004febe4 sp 00007ffc5bbbb5b0 error 4 in python3.11[41f000+2b3000] likely on CPU 3 (core 3, socket 0)
I am not familiar with that process. Can you go to the System Reports app and see what is listed in Crash Reports and let us know what the top 20 lines or so of the crash report(s) say. That might give us an idea of what the problem is.

Unless you have the exact same hardware, it is better to create a new topic for your issue. There can be many reasons for freezes and it gets confusing trying to help two different people in the same topic.
blind3rdeye wrote: Sat Oct 14, 2023 10:21 pmI'm pretty new to Mint, so I don't know what information to offer that might help find the problem.
Please make sure to include the information requested in section 5 of How to get help in your first post in the new topic.

There is no crash report.

 It core-dumped, but I don't know what it is to know where it would record errors if it is not in the location I advised you to check.

Do you have any Cinnamon spices or applets installed? Or did you in the past when you had LMDE 5 installed?

Edited to add: The crash reports directory is automatically cleaned on a weekly basis. I suppose it is possible in between when you posted and when you checked for reports that the reports were deleted.

I have Weather and CPU Temperature Indicator applets installed in taskbar, and Analog Chronometer desklet in desktop. These were also installed in LMDE5.

I checked crash report first time about a day after freeze, that is shown in syslog capture I posted, and there was no crash report at that time. Of course, if I was unlucky, the report was automatically wiped before I checked it. I can wait another freeze and check, if there any crash report after that.

Edit:
FYI: the system is never frozen when there is no load. Only when there is software update or backup active etc.

OK, system freezes today, this time during Youtube video. There is no crash report about this freeze. However there is crash report from earlier time, when Brave was crashed, when the system was idle:

A system freezing is not a crash so I would not expect a crash report for a freeze.

How did you "recover" from the freeze? Did the system recover on its own or did you kill power to the system? If you did the latter, run the following to see what was happening right before you stopped power to the system.

Code: Select all

journalctl -b -1 | tail -n 200
I do not use Brave so I do not know if there are any current issues with it.

System never recover from freeze by itself. I always have to press hardware reset switch to recover.

I think right command in this case is "journalctl -b -2 | tail -n 200", because command command "journalctl -b -1 | more" shows lines after freeze, which happens 17-oct-2023 13:29.

So:

Code: Select all

jyrki@jyrki-ws1 ~ $ journalctl -b -2 | tail -n 200

Jyrki wrote: Tue Oct 17, 2023 3:38 pmI think right command in this case is "journalctl -b -2 | tail -n 200", because command command "journalctl -b -1 | more" shows lines after freeze, which happens 17-oct-2023 13:29.
I don't understand this comment. The -b -1 means one boot cycle ago so it should be the one which froze and you stopped with the power button. I didn't tell you to use more; I just indicated to get the last 200 lines. Saying there are lines after the freeze makes it sound like the system did not freeze.

The -b -2 means two boot cycles ago from the current one.

I don't see any problems in the output you posted. It all looks like normal operation.

I know some people have run into issues where flatpak connections are seeming to hang up the system, but I can't tell from what you posted if that might an issue.

Yes. I started system couple of times after last freeze. That's why -2 was right parameter to use.

OK. By the way I noticed today, that also Chromium crashed several times, not just Brave.

So what next? Back to LMDE5?

I don't use Chromium either so I cannot speak to that.

You did an in-place upgrade from LMDE5 to LMDE6 correct? If so I would presume you would roll back to your snapshot/system image you took prior to upgrading.

I mention that because maybe there is something in the upgrade that is causing an issue and a fresh install of LMDE6 might work. However, because I don't really know what is causing the issue you are noticing, I can't really say if a fresh install will work better.

LMDE5 will be supported through July 1, 2024.

Yes, I did upgrade. I'll restore LMDE5 from Timeshift and run it couple of weeks to see, that there is no problem in my hardware, and then install fresh LMDE6. If it still freezes, it is time to move to Mint.

Thank you for your efforts.

How did you find out that it is hardware issue? What exactly was the issue and how did you resolve it?

When I restored LMDE5 with Timeshift, the system still froze. Previously, LMDE5 had worked without problems.

I also noticed that the system suddenly got stuck in the BIOS menu, but worked OK again when I removed the USB hub. I also reinstalled the memory modules just to be sure. Since then, the system has worked without problems.
