Debian Bookworm, on which LMDE 6 is based, uses Pipewire and does not use PulseAudio. That is how it is supposed to work.

Please open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click the Copy button in the lower right and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware.

The driver showing for your system is not the one I would expect to see for that hardware.

Can you please supply the output of lsmod and enclose the results in code tags as described in this tutorial How to use code display tags on forums.linuxmint.com.

I have an idea to suggest, but I would like to see some more data first.

Is this the first time you installed a Linux Mint version on this mini-desktop?

There is some hardware that worked well on older Linux Mint versions then stopped working on the latest version which is why I asked. The sound driver your computer loaded is a bit unusual and not one I would expect to see for that hardware, but I do see in the lsmod output something more like I was expecting to see.

Code: Select all

snd_soc_sst_cht_bsw_rt5645    28672  0
snd_intel_sst_acpi     20480  1
snd_soc_rt5645        180224  1 snd_soc_sst_cht_bsw_rt5645
snd_soc_acpi           16384  3 snd_soc_acpi_intel_match,snd_intel_sst_acpi,snd_soc_sst_cht_bsw_rt5645
snd_soc_rl6231         20480  1 snd_soc_rt5645
intel_atomisp2_pm      16384  0
The snd_soc_sst_cht_bsw_rt5645 is supposed to work out of the box with PulseAudio, but I know people who ran into issues with it when using it with the 5.15 kernel on Main Edition Linux Mint. You're using an even newer kernel so that may be why just installing PulseAudio did not help.

The driver which shows in the system information intel_atomisp2_pm isn't even one which starts with snd (sound) so I'm going to have you try something to try and force a different driver to load and see if that helps your situation.

I would like you to add the following kenrel parameter snd_sof.sof_debug=1 to grub. That helped others with snd_soc_sst_cht_bsw_rt5645 to have the SOF driver load and it fixed their issues. You can use the following information How to add a kernel parameter to temporarily or permanently add the parameter. When you add it temporarily, it adds it only for that current boot cycle, so if, for any reason, it seems to cause issues or it does not work, all you need to do is reboot to clear it. If you need more details than that topic provides, just let us know.

You are the first person to try this so I don't know if it will work because Linux Mint Main Edition is still using PulseAudio as the main sound server. (It uses PipeWire too, but not as the main sound server.)

One thing to keep in mind as we investigate is sound through bluetooth devices (speakers, headphones) are handled through a different mechanism and often one can get sound through bluetooth devices even if the laptop speakers are being troublesome.

Hello, thanks for the answer. I found this solution here, but I don't know how to apply or install it. Maybe you know a way to install this - worst case scenario I'll buy a new PC to be able to install LMDE 6. This solution affects an old Ubuntu version.

LMDE is based on Debian and not Ubuntu so a solution for an old Ubuntu version using a much older kernel is not relevant to your situation. That solution is not even relevant for Linux Mint based on Ubuntu because it is so old and out of date.

I have a section in the Sound Tips specifically for this type of hardware running Ubuntu-based Linux Mint which is why I had an idea of what to look for. Did you try the solution I suggested?

The base versions of Debian and Ubuntu change over time which is why it is important to find up-to-date information.

Well that didn't work. :| That wasn't what I expected either.

Remove the kernel parameter and update grub again and then the next time you boot, run

Code: Select all

journalctl -k | grep -Ei "ALSA|HDA|sof[-]|HDMI|snd[_-]|sound|hda.codec|hda.intel"
I just now noticed we hadn't run that yet. Let's see what information we get. Maybe it will give some clues the other information has not given us.

Have you tried LMDE 5 to see if you get sound? It is supported until July 1, 2024. It uses both an older kernel and PulseAudio. (I mention that because it appears you prefer LMDE over Ubuntu-based Linux Mint.)

I went to post my response and your post had disappeared. Here is my feedback on it.

I went searching for some other BESSTAR Z83-F on the forum, but apparently they do not all have the same hardware inside. One I found was using the
driver: bytcr-rt5651 whereas your error message indicates rt5645.

I did find another using intel_atomisp2_pm (what your original output shows), but that was a Microsoft Surface laptop.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of different variations available for audio hardware.
aut1 wrote:I have installed linuxmint-21.2-cinnamon-64bit.
It shows no driver for the audio unit. :|

Was sound working on this computer when you had Windows installed?

I see some snd_sof here. Maybe the kernel parameter will work with LM21.2.

Code: Select all

Is the output for

Code: Select all

journalctl -k | grep -Ei "ALSA|HDA|sof[-]|HDMI|snd[_-]|sound|hda.codec|hda.intel"
any different for LM21.2?

As a back-up option used by many people, do you have an available usb slot? Usb sound cards are not expensive and many people have posted on the forum that they work quite well. That could be an option. Make sure to get one which says it works on Linux-based distros.

dear smg - thank you very much for your work and your efforts. I'm currently testing older versions of Mint because the programming of Audio HDMI for this hardware is apparently no longer available in newer versions. I'm going to buy a new mini pc. It will be an AMD. Until then it will be running with an old version. I will post the version that works. Many greetings from Austria.

This is showing the SOF (sound open firmware) drivers sof-audio-acpi-intel-byt. I thought all distros were going to be using them so I'm surprised they didn't show in your LMDE 6 output. I also don't know why they didn't load and show in the inxi output for either version.

You could try the kernel parameters below to see if that helps. Try one and if it doesn't work then try the other. (Do not use both simultaneously.)
snd_sof.sof_debug=1
or
snd_intel_dspcfg.dsp_driver=2

We didn't try the second one on LMDE 6, but that might work because I see the module for it in both the LMDE 6 and LM 21.2 outputs.

Re: LMDE 6 Sound Dummy Output

You could try the kernel parameters below to see if that helps. Try one and if it doesn't work then try the other. (Do not use both simultaneously.)

Code: Select all

snd_sof.sof_debug=1
or
snd_intel_dspcfg.dsp_driver=2
We didn't try the second one on LMDE 6, but that might work because I see the module for it in both the LMDE 6 and LM 21.2 outputs.
I have now installed LMD6 again until the new PC arrives. I have tried the second parameter in grub. Maybe we can still identify the error.

Code: Select all

inxi -Axxx

Code: Select all

Audio:
  Device-1: Intel Atom/Celeron/Pentium Processor x5-E8000/J3xxx/N3xxx Series
    Imaging Unit driver: intel_atomisp2_pm v: kernel bus-ID: 00:03.0
    chip-ID: 8086:22b8 class-ID: 0480
  API: ALSA v: k6.1.0-13-amd64 status: kernel-api
  Server-1: PipeWire v: 0.3.65 status: active with: 1: pipewire-pulse
    status: active 2: wireplumber status: active 3: pipewire-alsa type: plugin

Code: Select all

journalctl -k | grep -Ei "ALSA|HDA|sof[-]|HDMI|snd[_-]|sound|hda.codec|hda.intel"

Code: Select all

That looks to be the same output as when there is no parameter so maybe that was the default the system was trying to use anyhow. There are several possibilities which can be used and the default is to be Auto and let the system select. By using the kernel parameter, that forces one specific option.

I do not have any other ideas. (However, a usb sound card is very inexpensive alternative option.)
