Session Freeze when gaming.

Post by georgek »

I am having issues when gaming as my entire session completely freezes. Let me explain.
I have a fresh install of linux mint 21.2 cinnamon edition that does not have any weird configurations (just the proprietary NVIDIA driver). I am experiencing constant freezes when playing hoi4 but have also experienced one when using firefox. What I have noticed until now is that the issue is reproduced always when playing the game 100% of the time. The firefox one was never experienced again and was of minor severity as it didn't freeze the session entirely just the browser. On the other hand the game related ones completely made the system unresponsive. While the screen was completely frozen the only thing still responsive was the mouse and the sound coming from the spotify client in the background. I was unable though to alt-tab, ctrl-alt-del or try any other combination successfully and had to force shutdown the system via the power button.

As for the system specs:

The only changes I have made to the system is the change to the 6.5 kernel and the install and enforcement of pipewire and wireplumber. I know for a fact that I have zero hardware issues (Pop 22.4 and win10 work flawlessly) and that the issue doesn't exist in wayland (have been using wayland on pop for a while now and also tried the experimental 21.3 beta) so it is probably x11 related. The problem persists on a clean install of mint 21.3 beta on the default session. The game also works flawlessly on every other install (mentioned or not) besides mint. Is there a way to find out the root cause. Do I need to submit specific logs and if so where to find them? I have not tested if the problem persists with the Lts kernel because:

1. I'm 99% sure it has nothing to do with the kernel version.
2. I need the newer kernel for better proton compatibility and features.

Ow and the game hoi4 is native I do not run it under proton just a quick disclaimer.
I have been using linux for almost a decade now and have never encountered this problem before which is why I came to seek support.
Thanks in advance!

I am also experiencing such freezes but on irregular intervals while playing Deep Rock Galactic via Steam. The system freezes completely, Alt-Tab, Alt+Crtl+Backspace and Alt+Crtl+F1/F2 does nothing, but I can still talk to my friend in the Signal call. The logs haven't given me any clue. I've experienced it on Victoria and Virginia.

I also have this issue, and like the other two people replying here, have an nvidia gpu. I've spent some time researching this, and it seems like this is a long-standing issue that some (but not all) nvidia gpu users have had with multiple different. x11 linux distros for years. i've found a lot of suggested solutions, and tried most of them, but none of them have worked.

Interesting... What solutions did you try? I saw a post in a forum mentioning usb-autosuspend and how it could be the problem so I disabled it, but no luck the problem persists. I also thought that it could be somewhat related to oppengl and nvidia on xorg, since hoi4 only supports opengl and no vulcan. NVIDIA's drivers still are not up to par with windows so it is just speculation but it could be opengl related.

i hadn't tried that. here are some things i have tried though

- running games fullscreen, windowed, and borderless
- different refresh rates
- vsync on and off in game
- force composition pipeline in nvidia settings on and off
- disable compositing for full screen windows in nvidia settings on and off
- gsync on and off in nvidia settings
- gsync on and off on my monitor itself
- nvidia drivers - 525 and 535 from the Mint update manager, plus the experimental 545 drivers from PPA, always purging existing nvidia drivers before installing new ones
- linux kernels - mint's default 5.15, as well as the supported 6.5 kernel
- a grub config edit to ensure nvidia drivers load
- probably a few more things I'm forgetting.

I've mostly been playing Ace Combat 7 through proton (which is platinum in protondb, but I've also gotten this crash on the native linux version of hollow knight. i found that when it happens, i need to leave the computer running for a bit to troubleshoot properly. it doesn't recover, but if i just hit the power button right away, the most recent results from journalctl -b -0 -r will be from before the crash. if it wait though, i'll see this error right around when the crash happens

Code: Select all

kernel: NVRM: Xid (PCI:0000:01:00): 69, pid=18791, name=hollow_knight.x, Class Error: ChId 0041, Class 0000c797, Offset 00001418, Data 00000800, ErrorCode 0000000c
kernel: NVRM: GPU at PCI:0000:01:00: GPU-f6bd60c2-6d53-4945-c39e-4c00ce9a862b
XID error 69 is very broad. it can apparently be either a hardware issue, or a driver issue. this card has worked just fine for years on windows, so i don't think it's a hardware problem. However, all of that did remind me that when i was setting it up on Windows ages ago, i did a very minor automatic overclock on it with the manufacturer's software. I've booted back into windows to get that software again and undo that overclock to see if it helps.

That's quite the list, thanks for sharing your experience. I have tried a couple of those things myself due to other games not working properly, but the game I've mentioned was the only one that froze the system completely (and that isn't even very demanding). Once even when I was tabbed out of the game to look something up in Firefox. I find it very irritating that there is no other way but a hard reset to fix it. I was wondering if I should let it run longer but from hearing what you're saying, that won't help much either. Quite disheartening.

i don't have hard data on this, but high frame rates seem to make the crash happen more quickly. Ace Combat 7 will usually run for at least 30 minutes, and sometimes over an hour, when i limit it to 60 FPS. When i wanted to test if native linux games were also impacted, i left Hollow Knight uncapped. it ran at over 800 FPS, and crashed before i got out of the tutorial area. i tested it again after a reboot to se if i got the same XID error, and it crashed within a few minutes just like the first time, and journalctl showed XID error 69 again.

Great suggestion, thank you.

Since my freezes only happy occasionally, this might take a while to test.

Oh, when you get the crash, make sure you note down the time on a piece of paper or something. that way, when you check journalctl after rebooting, you'll be able to chec kfi the journal goes up to the time of the crash.

if you're able to recover from it without rebooting, you can check if you have a similar XID crash by running journalctl -b -0 -r in the terminal. if you can't recover, wait like 15 minutes, reboot, and run journalctl -b -1 -r

combining all of the following seems to be working okay.

- going back into windows and setting the GPU clock speeds back to stock with msi afterburner
- going into UEFI and turning off XMP
- disabled sync to vblank and allow flipping in nvidia settings
- selecting force full composition pipeline for both monitors in nvidia settings
- playing everything in borderless windowed mode

because of x11, i'm locked to 60 fps with no gsync since i have AGDQ on my 60fps side monitor. will have to go back and see if high refresh rates are stable with the second monitor off, but gsync will still be off the table because i have to play everything borderless. i'm leaving a lot of performance on the table, but that's fine for now, especially since i can boot back into windows if i need more.

It is unfortunate that the solution is not ideal. I'll probably wait and hope it gets patched in some newer NVIDIA driver or xorg (quite unlikely). I'll still hope for NVIDIA at least. Should this thread be marked as closed?

Out of curiosity, is the computer a laptop connected to an external monitor? If so, the 6.5 kernel is responsible.

Mine at least is a desktop, and i had the same issues on both 5.15.0-91 and 6.5.0-14. I'm still on 6.5 since i read it has better support for my Alder Lake Intel CPU than 5.15.

2 of 3 people posted system specs with desktops, only 1 was a laptop. Also my post shows I'm not using the 6.5 kernel.

Well it's up to you, but I wouldn't say the issue is solved. Maybe someone else can shed some light or make some recommendations?

Ok it didn't cross my mind that it could be different on a desktop. You are right.

Btw I really doubt it has anything to do with the kernel version. I tried some versions of 5.15 (5.15.82-5.15.0.91LTS etc), 6.2 and 6.5. I did not try custom kernels as I had a terrible experience in the past (they messed with my system after a few updates).

I was hopeful the tinkering would have resolved this issue, but today I was hosting a game and sent everyone to the limbo cause my system was freezing again, leaving me no other option than a hard reset. So frustrating.

Errors:

Was the game in question Deep Rock Galactic that you mentioned before?

Yes, it's the only game I've had that issue with.
