Hypnotix

Post by Windpower »

Hello
After upgrading from LM 21.2 to 21.3, Hypnotix does not work with UK channels like BBC or ITV. Used to work OK before. Some channels like STV work ok
Thank you for any help

No idea whether this is the problem (I don't use the app), but I notice from New Features that 21.3 has a new version.

I've not really bothered with Hypnotix before as I found most of the UK channels did not work (and I usually just record to my Freeview PVR).

I've just had a look again today and can still see that is the case, but what I noticed most is that there is a correlation between the structure of the channel URL that shows which ones are likely to work and which aren't. The ones that don't work have a similar structure to:

Code: Select all

http://123.123.123.123:8000/play/b123/index.m3u8
Whereas the ones that do have a more elongated structure:

Code: Select all

http://sub.domain.com:1234/something/livestream/index.m3u8
As examples, look at the URL for any of the main providers (BBC/ITV/Channel 4/Channel 5) and then look at channels like STV or Gems TV.

Whether that actually means anything or not I don't know, but it does seem to be the trend.

I also noticed that they are not https links, which I find rather surprising in this day and age.

It might be that what Hypnotix is doing is actually illegal (in the UK at least). The UK TV companies take a dim view of that sort of thing.

In the U.S., I have noticed that the UK BBC video is not obtainable in the U.S., where other UK, Australian videos are obtainable. I expect it is a zone or "rights" issue. I can't get the Scottish channels either.

I tried installing Hypnotix 4.3 onto Vanessa and it failed due to a dependency, I was unable to find the required dependency so gave up. Not really sure 4.3 would work on Vanessa anyway.

The OP would want to go the other direction, though, right? Mint 21.2 has Hypnotix 3.5.

Not that I want to get into an argument on the rights and wrongs of streaming but in the UK you pay a TV licence which covers you for watching live content, not limited to over the air transmitted TV and not limited to the UK. Basically if it is a live stream and is being shown anywhere else in the world via a standard transmission you are required to pay the licence fee. If you opt out of paying the licence fee and then stream live transmissions then you would be breaking the law.

Interesting, how did you get 4.3 installed? I am missing gir1.2-xapp (version >= 2.6.0) and could not find it. I did the install attempt by right clicking the .deb package.

Well, pooh! The package at your link is still missing the dependency. Will need to install Virginia I suppose. :) Which I plan on doing but wanted to get Hypnotix on my Vanessa first, and then install Virginia on another drive. Appreciate the help.

OK...well, that was enough to make me want to drink. Finally got Hypnotix 4.3 installed on Vanessa, it took the following packages, ignore the warnings and install each package.

Code: Select all

xapps-common_2.8.2+virginia_all.deb
libxapp1_2.8.2+virginia_amd64.deb
gir1.2-xapp-1.0_2.8.2+virginia_amd64.dev
hypnotix_4.3_all.deb
Presently watching the news, but it remains to be seen what I broke somewhere else.

edit: correct spelling

Interestingly enough, I am now watching BBC Home, but I am in the U.S. so maybe that is why. I was aware of the UK licensing scheme for the telly, but did not know how it affects the rest of the world.

No, default Free IPTV list strictly includes only free channels.

"Only free channels

If a channel is normally only available via commercial subscriptions it has nothing to do in this playlist. If on the other hand it is provided for free to everybody in a particular country, then it should be in this playlist.

- No paid channels
- Only channels which are officially provided for free (via DVB-S, DVB-T, analog, etc..)"

Yes, it's one of the many things I dislike about the BBC. The TV Licensing page lays it all out. Anyway, not going down that rabbit hole as it'll just annoy me more and there are still many people in the UK that think the licence fee is good value for money (I'm not one of them if you hadn't guessed :)).

Got it! Thanks Kory, I have edited the post and corrected the spelling. I have looked at that post at least 3 times and still missed the spelling. :)

So far, Hypnotix 4.3 is working well on Mint Vanessa. Other than some geo blocking, it connects to most of the English speaking sites in the FreeTV list. I expect it will do just as well for other languages.
