shortly after updating to 21.3 Virginia, I noticed my system clock was four days ahead. Not sure how that happened but it stopped me sending pop3 email from the future, until I had fixed it.

After adjusting the time and setting it to synch with servers via the Time and Date widget, I hunted here and I found this thread
viewtopic.php?p=2417811#p2417811

and used the various suggestions there with these results.

Code: Select all

*******:~$ sudo systemctl enable systemd-timesyncd
Failed to enable unit: Unit file systemd-timesyncd.service does not exist.
*******:~$ sudo systemctl start systemd-timesyncd
Failed to start systemd-timesyncd.service: Unit systemd-timesyncd.service not found.
*******:~$ sudo systemctl status systemd-timesyncd
Unit systemd-timesyncd.service could not be found.

I seem to be unable to force the synchronisation presumably because systemd-timesyncd.service is not found..

Obviously I don't know whether this is going to recur or whether it was just some temporary problem with the upgrade which is now fixed. But clearly my hardware clock is not synching with the system clock and it seems I can't force it to.

Advice appreciated. Many thanks.

Hello, revrob.

Might be Mint 21.3 introduced a timesync problem. At least I came across a 3rd thread, asking how to enable time synchronisation.
In that thread user camd nicely explains how make Linux Mint use systemd-timesyncd: viewtopic.php?p=2425730#p2425730.

HTH,
Karl

Thanks for the reply.

Yesterday the clock went into the future four days. I corrected it in the Linux Mint OS and set it to synch with internet using the clock applet.

I rebooted into setup and checked the hardware/BIOS setup and the hardware clock showed correct time and date.

I rebooted. Here is my updated system info as of now.

My clock is currently showing correct time but I suspect it will go awry once the machine suspends.

My laptop is behaving normally, it is only the desktop doing this.

the desktop dual boots with Windows 7 Pro - I booted up Windows in admin mode and the Windows system clock was correct and set to synch with internet time servers.

I'm assuming that if my CMOS battery had failed, then the clock would be resetting backwards to a much earlier date rather than forwards by four days?

thanks for the assistance.

If this is a bug in the 21.3 update, how do I go about reporting it through the proper channels please?

Hi, revrob.

Seems as if you should still check the steps given by user camd in the post, which I had linked to in my previous post, viewtopic.php?p=2425730#p2425730

and because those both seemed to be dead ends, I didn't proceed further in case I caused more problems.

If there are any suggestions as to where I go from here, I will gladly give it a go.

I HAVE done the required commands via the clock applet, but whether that is working or not I won't know until the next synch failure!

this machine has been through at least 3 version upgrades, 21.1, 21.2, 21.3 all via the update manager.

BIOS: American Megatrends v: 11.5B1 date: 10/31/2013
As a sidenote:
It seems there is a slightly newer bios version available for your computer. The versioning is a bit confusing though. The support page offers a download of version B6 dated 2014-02-13: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/FM2-A55M-E33/support
If you think the issue is solved, edit your original post and add the word solved to the title.

First check if systemd-timesyncd package is installed

Code: Select all

apt policy systemd-timesyncd
If Installed: line is empty run

Code: Select all

sudo apt install systemd-timesyncd

I'll just add that I saw a similar problem when upgrading LM Xfce from 21.2 to 21.3.

LM 21.2 was installed from scratch just a few days prior to upgrading and I must admit that I did not check if it was working correctly in LM 21.2.
Anyway, I noticed that the clock was wrong and found some NTP messages in the journal.

It turned out that package "systemd-timesyncd" was NOT installed but packages "ntp" and "ntpdate" was.
I simply uninstalled "ntp" and "ntpdate", installed "systemd-timesyncd" and made sure it was enabled/started.

I thought I would mention it in case there is a general problem when upgrading LM Xfce from 21.2 to 21.3.

It is indeed confusing. I was in contact with Zoostorm tech support on a hardware issue last year, and the BIOS is the one they recommended at that time, so I'm inclined to stick with it. I did raise the confusing version issue with them, then stuck with what they suggested. If I recall, it was a zip inside a zip inside a zip and took several emails to find the right format to present to the setup OS. before it would recognise it.
But thanks for noticing and replying. Appreciated.

The "installed" line said "none", so I have now installed it.

Terminal also offered to autoremove a lot of old stuff so I okayed that and about 3GB was freed up which is a bonus (I hope).

and

Code: Select all

$ apt policy systemd-timesyncd
gives me this result:

and

gives me

Code: Select all

System clock synchronized: yes
              NTP service: active
          RTC in local TZ: no
showing that hw and sw clocks ARE mow synched ?

PREVIOUSLY that section reported:

Code: Select all

System clock synchronized: no
              NTP service: n/a
As it now says "System clock synchronized: yes" and NTP service active, do I need to do anything else?

Thanks VERY MUCH for all the contributions. This is why I like using Linux!!!

Re: problem with system clock, just after 21.3 upgrade.

sorry to report that after a day or two on suspend, when I woke the machine just now, the sytem clock as shown in the panel, instead of showing 15:02hrs on 1st Feb 2023, it showed 11:02hrs on 4th February 2023. That's the same problem as I have experienced before and reported above.

It is set correctly to European/London time zone, and to synch with internet time servers.

I inputed the following commands and got these results:

Code: Select all

:~$ timedatectl status
Local time: Sun 2024-02-04 11:10:07 GMT
Universal time: Sun 2024-02-04 11:10:07 UTC
                 RTC time: Sun 2024-02-04 11:10:07
                Time zone: Europe/London (GMT, +0000)
System clock synchronized: yes
              NTP service: active
          RTC in local TZ: no

I then tried:

Code: Select all

:~$ sudo hwclock --systohc
[sudo] password for ***:
I then repeated the status request:

Code: Select all

:~$ timedatectl status
Failed to query server: Failed to read RTC: Invalid argument
At that point, the panel clock synch'd properly with the real time.

I then entered this command and got:

Code: Select all

~$ systemctl status systemd-timesyncd

Any comments welcome.
Did that synch occur automatically or because of input from me?
Why does the command timedatectl status no longer work?

Many thanks.

Re: problem with system clock, just after 21.3 upgrade.

Post by vimes666 »

I'm assuming that if my CMOS battery had failed, then the clock would be resetting backwards to a much earlier date rather than forwards by four days?
I would check or replace the cmos battery anyway at this point

1. It seems you are providing output of commands when the synchronization process is not finished.
2. Is your CMOS battery OK? Run cat /proc/driver/rtc | grep batt and sensors command (this one after installing sudo sensors-detect)

I woke this desktop from suspend again and once more it was was four days ahead and a few hours behind, for about five minutes, then it synchronised back to today's date and time, just as I completed the tests you advised, below.

Code: Select all

$ cat /proc/driver/rtc | grep batt
batt_status	: okay
[code]

I presume this means my CMOS battery is okay?

and

[code]
robert@robert-MS-7721:~$ cat /proc/driver/rtc | sensors
radeon-pci-0008
Adapter: PCI adapter
temp1: -3.0°C (crit = +120.0°C, hyst = +90.0°C)

k10temp-pci-00c3
Adapter: PCI adapter
temp1: +0.0°C (high = +70.0°C)
                       (crit = +70.0°C, hyst = +69.0°C)
I'm a bit doubtful about my PCI adapter running at -3.0 degrees C...! :(

So, in summary, since the upgrade to Virginia 21.3, this is a repeatable issue - after each "suspend" period, the panel clock gets four days ahead and a few hours behind, but since the various tweaks advised above, it seems to sort itself out within 5 minutes or so, without intervention on my part and the test suggests my CMOS battery is okay.

I won't mark this solved yet.

thanks for all the helpful input.

Is it always exactly the same time shift (namely 90 hours, as you said in a comment)?
You may boot from grub menu into the old kernel series for realy long period and check for the issue.

I don't understand what you say about the "old kernel series" but each time over the last few days, the clock has moved forward EXACTLY 68 hours when I wake the dekstop from suspend. Sorry I misalculated before when I suggested 90 hours, through not looking carefully enough.

I understand about booting from the grub menu, and the options available other than 21.3 Linux or Windows 7 but not exactly what options you want me to choose. Are you saying that I go back to an earlier version and use that for a few days? Please give steps to follow in the grub options.

today I woke the machine up and simply waited to see what the panel clock did, without any action on my part in either terminal or the date/time applet.

I woke the machine at 9.54hrs, the panel clock was 68 hours ahead.
an automatic duplicity backup occurred on wakeup.
It's files were dated 68 hours ahead on my external HDD backup disk - this happens each time so I now have a collection of several days duplicity backups that have created backup files 68 hours ahead of the real time.
The panel clock was and is set to synch with internet servers.
For the purposes of this post I set the system to suspend "never".
I opened Firefox browser and started this post.
The panel clock was still 68 hours ahead 30 minutes later.
an update was due but I ignored it.
after 30 minutes was up, I ran the date/time applet and synched the clock.

Is there any way to control the synch function so it runs automatically on wakeup or bootand use that as a workaround?

I'm not happy about backups and timeshift files having a forward date on them!
this did happen briefly a few months ago when I spotted a timeshift backup with a future date on it and reported it here. That didn't repeat itself so I never solved it. Now I have a repeatable error so am hoping for some solution.

Thanks for the interest.

I thought it makes sense, and it's quite simple to do, to exclude kernel regression. In the Grub menu you choose "Advanced options for Linux Mint ..." and select line for booting with with oldest kernel available. They go in pairs, do not select line which have recovery mode in it.

Re: problem with system clock, just after 21.3 upgrade.

Post by revrob »

You ae right, it was simple, I was just being dim.
Okay, done that, now running the previous kernel. I only have one previous kernel (5.15.0-91) having done an "autoremove" recently, and have booted that.
I'm about to leave the machine to suspend on its own and see what happens.

Any chance you still have ntpdate installed? If so, remove it...it's deprecated.
