How is Linux Mint made?

Post by ShadowOfHassen »

I've been wondering how exactly is an operating like Linux Mint is made. I know you base stuff off ubuntu or debian packages, but how do you set up which packages you're going to use, build a boot iso and set up an installer? Do you use something like cubic, or is there another way?

Welcome to the Forum.

They probably have their own custom tools.
It might be this: https://github.com/linuxmint/mint-dev-tools
because it says here https://linuxmint-developer-guide.readt ... en/latest/ to install mint-dev-tools in the Setup part.

According to some blog comments here https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=4611#comment-386462 they are using a tool named live-build (which is a Debian tool available in apt repositories) inside a Docker container. In the past they used a custom fork of live-build. If you look at the commit messages in mint-dev-tools on Github, they sound similar to what's explained in Clem's comment.

Probably best to ask a developer (if you can find one) in the Linux Mint IRC channel (launch HexChat from your Menu) or the community in Linux Mint Discord server https://discord.com/invite/mint

With a dash of Balanced mentalities, a healthy dose of good focus, a side of freedom-minded core beliefs ( meaning that your privacy is 1st priority as well as respecting your right to truly own and manage what is supposed to be YOUR PC ) and an equally healthy dose of ideas to ensure incoming Windows users can most easily feel right at home with very minimal setup effort...thus ensuring better...the chance they will want to stay in the Linux world...

And icing on the cake....A dev team that ..ACTUALLY...listens to the end user with intelligent critical thought and wise considerations before just jumping on any popular idea/tech idea bandwagon.
