[Solved] Another NVIDIA Fail

Post by daphneB »

I've searched but cannot find an answer to this specific problem.

In Mint 21.3 using the driver manager, installing the Nvidia driver works just fine. Today I changed to LMDE 6 and tried installing the Nvidia driver on the command line and from the software centre but on reboot the driver is not active, although it is installed. I've reinstalled LMDE a couple of times and tried to no avail. This is a clean reinstallation and the driver install is the first thing I have done after installing the initial OS updates.

In Mint 21.3 there was a tray icon and nvidia-settings showed the correct OS version (linux-x86_64), all my monitors, etc. In LMDE there's no tray icon and nvidia-settings shows the OS as linux_unkown and there are no screens showing and far fewer available settings (i.e. no X Screen 0 dropdown or Prime Profiles) than in 21.3.

Not sure what else to post, I think that's all the system info that I saw asked for in other posts. If there's something else let me know.

Oh and I've tried adding the following to /etc/modules but no luck.

Code: Select all

nvidia
nvidia-drm
nvidia-modeset

Welcome to the forum, daphneB.

The Nvidia driver is installed and loaded. Nvidia did not "fail".

Please see Debian wiki: Nvidia Optimus for how to have Nvidia as the primary renderer on your dual-graphics laptop. Debian (LMDE 6) does not have the same tools that Ubuntu (LM 21.3) does so more manual work is necessary.

Thank you!

Took a bit of doing, and a couple of scary black screens when I restarted lightdm.service but I got it working eventually.
