Installing HP printer Colour LaserJet Pro M255

Post by beacon »

I am always cautious about buying something that may not work with Linux. Everything I read indicated that this printer would be just the job. Actually I have spent two whole days trying to get it to work. I tried everything imaginable and now discover that HP do not support LM21.3. Is there a quick solution to this, or failing that, is there a way to downgrade to LM 21.1, which apparently is supported?

Many thanks for any advice.

Has this
https://linuxmint-user-guide.readthedoc ... nters.html
been of any use to you?

I can think of no reason why the latest linux HP driver for that printer would not work with LM 21.3

Does HP specifically say they don't support LM 21.3 or just a case that their documentation team have not yet got round to updating the words?

Thank you for your quick reply. I was interested in the statement of the work you do for people my age, and perhaps I can get in touch. As to the substance, I've got no help from the manuals and have exhausted myself trying everything I can imagine doing. When I attempt to download the driver, there is a statement that 21.3 is not supported and should they try 21.1. I have twice said yes, but it simply won't work.
Regards.

so beacon; welcome to the forum

the standard for printers used to be: that one needed to download and install a printer driver;

"Driverless" appeared several years ago, and brian_p was the advocate of that on this forum; brian abruptly disappeared last Sept; a great loss to the forum

can you tell us what you have done please?

ie your computer was turned on; and you attempted to connect the printer to the computer via ...

what I am thinking beacon is that this printer should be automatically recognised by Mint ...... you shouldn't need to do anything

there seem to be 3 variants of the M255: all very similar one assumes

Thank you for additional comments. I really have tried everything. First of all, as suggested, I fully expected the printer to be recognised automatically, as others have been. I have two computers, both with LM 21.3, and the printer doesn't show up on either. Another printer (Samsung M2020) does appear. To describe all my attempts would take ages. I have gone to the manual and been told that there is no support for Linux but there is a referral to another page, which advises me to download HPLIP. I have attempted to download HPLIP, and that fails: I receive the message that it will not work with 21.3, but I might want to try with the version that works with 21.1. That attempt fails: I reach a certain point when following the instructions, then everything just disappears from the screen. I have gone to Administration-printers and used the 'add printer ' button. I get to the point where it says that the printer is installed, but it won't print a test page, as 'the printer cannot be located'. I have gone directly to localhost:631 and get the same non-working results. It is so frustrating, as I had checked in advance that the printer would be a shoo-in for Linux.

This is all very embarrassing, but I have to confess to a stupid mistake. I had had someone to help out with another problem, and the computer was left on a wired connection. So everything I tried to do with wi fi was bound to fail. I was working on following up the latest suggestions, which meant I have spent about four days on the issue, only to solve it in five minutes once the penny dropped.

I appreciate all the help that was offered and apologise for wasting your time.

Kind regards

so pushing through your embarrassment, can you tell us exactly what the issue was and what you did;

there will be other folks likely to do the same thing; and they will come here asking for help

Thank you for pointing out that I was not clear. In fact, once my wi fi was set up properly, the printer was recognised automatically, which is what I had been told to expect.

Back again, and 'solved' removed. After one success, the printer is no longer recognized, and I can't install it any other way. More suggestions will be much appreciated.

Hello beacon,
This is really odd. I am struggling to understand what could have happened between the porinter working fine one moment and then no longer working. Together, the LM community and yourself will solve this; it just may take a bit of time, we will need to be patient and work around our frustrations.
Given that the last solution involved attaching the printer to the wireless network, we may need to establish whether it is still attached to the wireless network.

Before continuing though, it may be a good idea to establish whether you can access another printing facility. In many parts of the UK local libraries can print files for you if you take them onto a USB. Some commercial outlets such as Estate Agents may do the same. And of course there are companies like printers who will provide a service for a fee; I think some may do it online and post printed output to you. I mention this purely in case you have an urgent need to print something. As long as your files are not sensitive you could even email them to a friend who could print and post them back to you.

Lets start by asking you to follow the requests made earlier by pdc_2 and post the results back from those commands and we will then take it from there. Have the printer switched on before you run the command but it really should not make a difference.

Thank you very much Billy Linux for your attempts to help, your patience and careful explanations, without making me feel an idiot.
With respect to the point about outside printers, they aren't necessary, as I do have a working Samsung printer (M2020W) which is recognised when I boot the computer. As I have noted, I am unable to install a working version of HPLIP (not functional in LM 21.3), and every time I try another approach, there is a message that no HP printers are found. Attempts to install through cups end in failure.

I shall try to list below the results of the searches suggested buy pdc_2. I have always been told to delete any identifying information, but I haven't managed very well on this occasion.

I am realy pleased that you have an alternative way of printing via your Samsung; it simply means there is a reduced pressure to solve your HP laserjet problem quickly/

Thanks for supplying the requested info. At this stage, I think the LM community might benefit from further info. I am certainly no printer expert at all but there will be others hopefully on here who will jump in with assistance.

So, if you can provide please answers to the following, I will then remain silent on the issue, but monitor. In that way, others will see you still need assistance.

Switch both printers on and please supply the output from both these commands

Code: Select all

lpstat -l -e

Code: Select all

driverless
if you could wrap your output in "code mode" by clicking on the code display </> box it would make reading the output much easier.

The first command will show something like this:

Code: Select all

lpstat -l -e
Canon_TS8000_series network none ipps://Canon%20TS8000%20series._ipps._tcp.local/
TS8000LAN permanent ipp://localhost/printers/TS8000LAN cnijbe2://Canon/?port=net&serial=00-BB-C1-21-36-EF
The second command will show something like this:-

Code: Select all

driverless
ipps://Canon%20TS8000%20series._ipps._tcp.local/
but it might well just be blank.

It would also be very good if you could take some screenshots and place them in your answer. You may need to copy your screenshots to somewhere like IMGUR and then use the insert image icon at the top of response window to paste the image in.

The first screenshot is obtained by going to Settings > Printers and look something like this:-
Image
The second screenshot is obtained by double-clicking on each of the printers (if more tan one showing in the first screenshot) and they should look something like this (if you have more than one):-

Image
Image

It would also be very useful if you could confirm your system is fully up to date.
Also, try to provide the output from

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxrz

Code: Select all

apt policy cups

Re: Installing HP printer Colour LaserJet Pro M255

Post by BillyLinux »

Many thanks for supplying the requested info.
I won't bore you with the details, but for now can I please ask you to supply some of the info again.
I have a few doubts as to whether your printers were on when you issued the commands. It is possible they were, but it is also possible the HP may not have been connected to your wifi for whatever reason.

First of all, please shutdown/switch off any desktops/laptops. Switch on both printers, wait a good few minutes. If you have any means from the printer panels to determine whether the printers are connected to the network, then you should do this. I am used to Canon printers and they have an internal thing which prints out various stuff including things like IP and MAC addresses. It is very possible later on down the road such info may become useful. You should not have to switch your router off and on, but you may do so first - but only if you are confident in switching it back on again. Give it 15 mins between off and on before doing anything else. Oh and switch off the router - do not reset the router. We do not want to reset your router settings - simply disconnect and reconnect with a power off and power on.

After the printers are on, log in to your device and issue these commands again:-

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl status cups
You will need to enter your password after issuing the command above. When it has finished it will have a count displayed but just press CTRL C to halt the command.

Code: Select all

lpinfo -m | grep -i M255

Code: Select all

lpinfo -v

Code: Select all

lpstat -l -e

Code: Select all

driverless
Let us know the results of each command. Whether your output is any different from the first time will be very telling, I hope.
Take your time - no hurry.
