Steam not launching Windows games

Post by ale »

Hello everyone, I'm new to the linux world. I recently bought an old (performant) laptop, HP Zbook 15 G3 with intel i7 and Nvidia quadro M1000M as a dedicated graphic.
It came with windows 11 preinstalled and since I wanted to do some gaming every once in a while I installed GTAv via steam with success, tested and it worked fine..
I then decided to try linux mint and it immediately convinced me to erase the windows partition.

Long story short I've installed steam through the official website, installed wine, winetricks, been spending 3 days on trying every tutorial available but still can't understand why steam is not launching GTAv or Fallout4 with any proton extension.
Works fine with The Long Dark, which should be native but I'm slamming my head on the keyboard because I just don't understand what's going on and how to easily fix it.

Here some informations about the sistem:

Hp is famous because it supports Linux for his server hardware.
I haven't heard of support for other hardware. If the equipment does not cause any other problems, it is already a success :D

1. Look at your report. Section " Graphics: "
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa Intel HD Graphics 530 (SKL GT2) v: 4.6 Mesa 23.0.4-0ubuntu1~22.04.1
direct render: Yes
Maybe you can switch the driver to Nvidia?
You probably have an application ( Driver Manager ) in your system that allows you to install another driver.

Otherwise, check the forum for an example topic.
viewtopic.php?t=355208
( Just be careful, please )

2. Let's check how much the game is supported.
Long story short I've installed steam through the official website, installed wine, winetricks, been spending 3 days on trying every tutorial available but still can't understand why steam is not launching GTAv or Fallout4 with any proton extension.
Your description is not precise. Because the game can run from its own installer as well as from, for example, Steam.
- from Steam web site = No support for Linux
- from https://www.protondb.com/ = It has various problems, but people are writing that it works.
The opinions there can help you, e.g. with which version of Proton it last worked, also with Intel graphic card.

Requirements except the system from Steam web site. https://store.steampowered.com/app/2715 ... ft_Auto_V/
- CPU = ok above 3.2 GHz
- RAM = ok above 8 GB RAM
- GPU = Nvidia or AMD is needed. This may be your problem because I see Intel is active.
How many vram have NVIDIA GM107GLM ? 2Gib? That should be enough in theory.

I hope this will be enough.
You can check also https://lutris.net/games/grand-theft-auto-v/
but I don't see any requirements for the game there.

Edited

I forgot to add something else.
Each program has its own support.
For example for GTA from Steam https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton ... Theft+Auto

. You're not a dummy or dumb..It just sounds like you cannonball-ed into a new pool without ensuring you could see the bottom yet :D ..aka jumped the gun alittle fast.

1. You could have acquired a 2nd ssd to put Linux Mint into ( separate drives = sane and happy lives ) and that way you could easily just boot right back into Windows if needs be ( which being a Linux beginner..chances are..you'll encounter a temp dead end. It happens). This way you could dual boot without the rabbit hole list of possible complications you could encounter having Linux and Windows on the same drive..but still easily take breaks from Linux world when needed..

2. One game working should never automatically say " Ok..That means everything else will just work ". Linux is not windows.
Long story short I've installed steam through the official website
I've heard mixed results from many who have done that via Linux method. It's usually a better bet to either install it via Software Manager or sudo apt install steam -y in terminal window.

BUT if you're going to try one of those two methods..you really should start fresh and nuke steam first. ** warning the exact command combo I'm providing will nuke all games and games data involved in steam. If you used Steam to download and install any of those games. back up that folder to a separate safe folder or partition or separate drive... first **

Code: Select all

sudo apt remove steam -y steam-launcher && sudo apt purge steam steam-launcher && rm -rf .steam* &&
cd ~/.local/share && rm -rf Steam && cd ~/ && rm .steampath && rm .steampid &&
sudo apt purge --autoremove steam

Did you ensure you opted IN to a Proton version... BEFORE..you downloaded and installed GTA V or Fallout 4?

I'm unsure about those two games, but I've noticed with Doom 2016...that it won't run correctly or 100% when I didn't enable proton first..then download and install the game. It can matter.

That part confuses me, Steam doesn't let me download/install a windows game without enabling a proton version first (the button is greyed out), or am I misunderstanding your comment?

Maybe he means launching a non-Steam game in the Steam application?
It would be weird for me too
because Steam usually blocks installation for the wrong system if Proton is not enabled.

I don't want to write a guide because I have a lot of things to do.
But as we develop the topic, I see some interesting tips.
- Proton should be active for all games or at least for the game being launched.
- You can try disabling the sandbox for a while to see if that helps. ( AppArmor , Firejail )
- I saw that the game runs on Intel and Nvidia, But it's worth checking.
If none of the games 3D want to run ( also open source game from Linux Mint repository )
you will need help from developers.
Nvidia, I'm not sure https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/c/g ... /linux/148
Intel https://docs.mesa3d.org/bugs.html
- From my own experience, I can say that games without or with Linux support do not always worked perfectly.
* they may be broken by a game update
* they may be broken by a Steam update
( In this case, reinstalling the game or deleting the settings should help, if not, you need to write. )

The best guide for Linux players I seen on reddit https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/
and I see in FAQ that they have moved the guide to https://linux-gaming.kwindu.eu/index.ph ... =Main_Page

You probably have an application ( Driver Manager ) in your system that allows you to install another driver.
Here's a screenshot of the system information in steam.. I noticed that the primary graphic card it detects it's the Intel one.. I did some research and answers were "steam does not decide which card to use, so it doesn't matter what's written there"
Left me thoughtful anyways..
Schermata del 2024-02-07 11-59-58.png
Here instead the screenshot from the driver manager, it was already installed the recommended one and the graphic card itself seems to work, since when I launched The Long Dark(supported game), I had a system info running and could see it filling the memory.. (sorry for my bad explanation)

I downloaded and tried every proton version, from the experimental to the very last (first) one and the reaction is always the same:
I click Play, steam says launching, a window appears saying 'Processing Vulkan Shaders' then 'Installing windows script' and without any error or sign it switches back to the green button Play.
Didn't try to launch games from it's executable though, because I don't know how to do it and thought only steam can run them if downloaded from it.

Yes, correct 2GB, as said on windows it worked fine..

So you installed one measly game and you immediately assumed you could right then and their leave Windows behind. ( sigh)
Nooo , not just that! I will use this notebook mainly for working purposes, but was also interested in playing some games every once in a while..
I've been sick of Windows for years, when I tried linux I immediately noticed how faster and smoother it was, so I didn't think twice, but that's kind of my problem when it comes to messing with OS.. even with custom ROMs on my phone.. I always implode things
BUT if you're going to try one of those two methods..you really should start fresh and nuke steam first. ** warning the exact command combo I'm providing will nuke all games and games data involved in steam. I might try that.. I've already deleted steam and games once so I'm only left with Fallout to test, so if I manage to get it working I'll be installing everything else..

Did you ensure you opted IN to a Proton version... BEFORE..you downloaded and installed GTA V or Fallout 4?
When I clicked "Enable steam play for all other titles" I think it automatically download proton experimental, but the game can't be downloaded (if not supported) if the option is not enabled, so yeah, kind of.

It's nice to hear that you're not afraid to test. :D

General advice
- In W... system you can create a system restore point, if a system or application update breaks something
- In Linux system users praise Timeshift app, but if the system crashes completely, it is necessary live-CD or live-USB with Timeshift.
( sometimes in live mode it is possible to install applications )
- I personally I have Timeshift, but previously I preferred to move files and reinstall the system from live-USB.

- motoryzen mentioned above about installing Steam from the repository.
I don't know which version it is in " Software Manager " but I recommend install Steam from the repository.
I used for this Synaptic package manager.
I guess there are three ways to install Steam

1. From Steam web site - additional things from the repository need to be installed manually.
2. From the system repository - the package should install all the necessary things.
Additionally, it is easier to install something for Steam if it is in the repository.
3. flatpak - This works from a sandbox, stuff from the repository usually won't work with this Steam.
You have to ask those developers if you want add something or something not working, but worked in other Steam.

What are these things?
- " architecture i386 "
- " vulkan " ( I seen error in your log from game )
- " xboxdrv "
- sometimes users want additional tools.

Example below in the blog to show how complicated it is https://sirenwatcher.com/how-to-install ... -on-linux/
( The blog is updated [sometimes] but I hope it's enough, package names on the system may also be renamed )
Also mentioned in this blog about proton-ge-custom.
I played without custom proton. Some people trust and use it because the user of this application sometimes creates his own patches.

Edited
You can also test Lutris.
Lutris sometimes allows you to run games that normally don't want to run.
But how to use it, you need to ask or look for a guide. I use it too rarely.

No idea.. I installed so many things trying to follow so many tutorials and codes.. but I don't ever get any other hint, a new error message, something that tells me what went wrong, anything!

I tired to launch steam from terminal and launching the game I get this error, maybe it could be a new hint?

Code: Select all

I think these two particular games can be a bit tricky to get to work from what I'm hearing. But don't give up yet, many people got them to work!

GTAV: Did Steam install the Rockstar launcher? It's known to be buggy even on Windows, but without it, you cannot run the game. There's a couple of comments about it here: https://www.protondb.com/app/271590
Since Lutris has been mentioned before, which is another games launcher for Linux and can also run Steam games, you could try the Standalone-1.0.36.344 version of the Rockstar launcher here: https://lutris.net/games/rockstar-games-launcher/. But from my experience, Lutris isn't as intuitive to use as Steam.

About Fallout 4, it also seems to have some issues according to https://www.protondb.com/app/377160. Some Steam installations seem to work while others don't - I've installed Steam via the Software Manager and it works fine overall, but I cannot comment on that particular game.

About Proton versions on Steam: I usually try the latest or Proton Experimental unless it's an older game and there are mentions about it running well with a particular Proton version. Most of the time it simply works but there are exceptions of course.

The ELFCLASS32 error you are getting hints to missing 32-bit support, means there are some libraries missing. A quick search pointed me to https://askubuntu.com/questions/1284045 ... -20-04-lts but I'm sure someone else can shed more light on this error.

I hope you'll get this sorted.

- If you have already tested everything, including with an active Nvidia driver (inxi report), then this may be all you could do.
I recommend playing games that already have the Steam icon.
Try test other games for example CycloHex , " Gear Up " , are free and small.
Especially since finding the cause of problems for games intended only for W... system is difficult.
You can help developers by providing a log. I provided a link to Proton on GitHub above.

- I personally do not have the possibility to test these games or how to switch hybrid graphics system.
There are many ways to switch graphic card. I have two cards, but I don't have a hybrid system for laptops
and when I tested nvidia-prime-applet , this ended with a black screen for me.
That's why I suggested caution above.

Why this might be important?
Note that support usually applies to Nvidia and AMD cards.
Intel graphics cards were weaker before. But this may change in the next few years.

- I don't have error " wrong ELF class " on Nvidia,
" the error message suggests that the library gameoverlayrenderer.so is a 32-bit library (ELFCLASS32), but the application being executed is likely a 64-bit application. "
Do you have installed? for example libgl1-mesa-dri:i386
For example in terminal I can check

Code: Select all

$ dpkg -l | grep "libgl1-mesa-dri:i386" && echo Yes || echo No
ii libgl1-mesa-dri:i386 23.0.4-0ubuntu1~22.04.1 i386 free implementation of the OpenGL API -- DRI modules
Yes

$ dpkg -l | grep "libgl1-mesa-dri:i386-lying" && echo Yes || echo No
No
