Internal disk to be shut down permanently

Post by matematico65 »

Hello everyone, I have this issue: I have a faulty internal disk "sdd," and every time I turn on my PC, it loads a series of messages describing attempts to access this disk. I would like to permanently turn it off because it's unusable and speed up the startup procedures. How can I do that?
Thanks in advance.

See if you can get into the BIOS to disable it; without posting the info about your hardware, your best bet is to look at the manual. The link in the pink bar above is your friend.

If it's a desktop machine it should simply be a case of disconnecting the power and SATA cables from the offending drive. You might want to check your fstab to see if that drive is referenced there; if so add a # to the beginning of that line entry in fstab (to "comment it out").

I'm assuming you've run a SMART test on the drive?

While shedyed made reasonable points ( always try to post your system details. Forum rules how to get help, step 5, 2nd dot aka bulletin point easily tells you how..so others save time-wasting guessing )

+1 for BG405's comment. as that guarantees to take the faulty drive out of the equation 100%... The system can't be bogged down by a faulty drive that isn't connected what so ever. Can't beat that.

I apologize for the missing information I have taken care of posting it.

I was hoping to be able to turn off the disk from terminal, but I am not familiar with the commands.

BG405 I have already checked the fstab file because it was suggested me by ChatGPT, but there are no references to the disk.
ChatGPT also provided other suggestions with much more complex terminal commands, but I was afraid to execute them.
Unfortunately, I am not able to find the suggested cables; I will try to look on YouTube to see if I can identify them with certainty.

shedyed I will also try to check if I can disable it from the BIOS.

For now, thank you for the suggestions.

Removing the lead which looks like this should be enough.
