Display settings keep popping up

Post by hex1A4 »

Hello.

On Linux Mint 21.1 Xfce the Display settings periodically pop up and the refresh rate keeps switching from 120Hz to 60Hz. This started happening after I installed a new video card, so I presume that that is the culprit. The video card is a Gigabyte Radeon RX 6600 Eagle 8G. How can I diagnose and fix this?

Thank you kindly.

EDIT: The video card is connected via HDMI and the driver is 'amdgpu'.

EDIT2: I noticed that this is happening when the display is going into suspend mode. When I disabled the display from being handled by the power manager this stopped happening.

Are you using the 6.5 kernel available in Update Manager? The 6600 GPU needs to be using a 6 series kernel to get the latest bug fixes/patches.

Please open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click the Copy button in the lower right and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware.

I recommend doing that. HDMI connections returning from sleep with the 6600s was a known fixed bug.

Instructions for upgrading to the 6.5 kernel:
  • Open Update Manager.
  • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
  • Make sure 6.5 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
  • Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.
It is also possible your system may benefit from amdgpu linux-firmware updates. Instructions are here so try that if the kernel alone does not fix it.

What is wharf?
System:
Kernel: 5.15.0-89-generic x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 11.4.0 Desktop: Xfce 4.16.0
tk: Gtk 3.24.23 info: xfce4-panel, wharf wm: xfwm 4.16.1 dm: LightDM 1.30.0
Distro: Linux Mint 21.1 Vera base: Ubuntu 22.04 jammy

Also, there appears to be something odd happening with your graphics display drivers. inxi is showing amdgpu as unloaded, but that is what the 6600 should be using.

Graphics:
Display: server: X.Org v: 1.21.1.4 compositor: xfwm v: 4.16.1 driver: X: loaded: ati,radeon
unloaded: amdgpu,fbdev,modesetting,vesa gpu: amdgpu display-ID: :0.0 screens: 1

That might be just an issue of how inxi is reading the X server information. X Server runs the graphics in Linux Mint. Please use this command in a terminal to upload the X Server log file to termbin:

Code: Select all

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | nc termbin.com 9999
It will return with a url address that you can post in your next reply.

I upgraded the kernel. I upgraded the firmware. amdgpu is still unloaded (according to System Reports). Wharf is a dock in AfterStep. I had another user account logged in with AfterStep. The X.org log is here.

Your onboard GPU (Kaveri) is GCN2.x which is the generation right before amdgpu became standard and it has the capability to use amdgpu. That is actually listed in the Xorg log.

Code: Select all

[ 69.894] (II) AMDGPU: Driver for AMD Radeon:
All GPUs supported by the amdgpu kernel driver
However, you have to use kernel parameters to have that GPU use amdgpu instead of radeon because technically support was considered "experimental" for Kaveri. I believe the below references the fact you have not enabled the kernel parameters for the Kaveri.

Code: Select all

[ 69.931] (EE) AMDGPU(G0): amdgpu_device_initialize failed
G0 must be your onboard GPU (which does not use amdgpu) because 0 is the 6600.

Code: Select all

[ 69.932] (--) AMDGPU(0): Chipset: "AMD Radeon RX 6600" (ChipID = 0x73ff)
However, amdgpu is showing as unloaded.

Code: Select all

[ 70.851] (II) UnloadModule: "amdgpu"
Let's enable amdgpu for the onboard and I expect that will clear that issue. You can enable amdgpu support by adding these four kernel parameters radeon.si_support=0 amdgpu.si_support=1 radeon.cik_support=0 amdgpu.cik_support=1 to grub. (Note: there is a space between the parameters.) You can use the following information How to add a kernel parameter to temporarily or permanently add the parameters. When you add them temporarily, they are added only for that current boot cycle, so if, for any reason, they seems to cause issues or do not work, all you need to do is reboot to clear them. If you need more details than that topic provides, just let us know.

Re: Display settings keep popping up

Post by hex1A4 »

Okay, so I did all that and when the Power Manager is managing the display, the display doesn't blank, then when it's supposed to suspend it blanks for a few seconds then the Display settings window popes-up. Then, when it's time to sleep the display blanks for a few seconds then a second instance of the Display settings window appears. The display stays on from then on. The refresh rate is changed from 120Hz to 60Hz.

The HDMI cable was a high-end cable which I bought together with the video card. Still, it was possible that the culprit was HDMI, so I bought a high-end Display Port 2.1 cable, but the only change was an additional entry in the refresh rate field: 144Hz. I kept it at 120Hz.

Earlier today there was a kernel update to version 6.5.0-25, so I upgraded and the same keeps happening. During the kernel update I noticed amdgpu related firmware warnings which could be significant. They were:

Code: Select all

Those would only be significant if you had the hardware which matched them and you do not so they are not significant. Missing firmware for hardware that you do not have is not a problem.

What is your current System Information and your current Xorg.log url?

hex1A4 wrote: Tue Feb 20, 2024 12:12 pmOn Linux Mint 21.1 Xfce the Display settings periodically pop up and the refresh rate keeps switching from 120Hz to 60Hz. This started happening after I installed a new video card, so I presume that that is the culprit. The video card is a Gigabyte Radeon RX 6600 Eagle 8G. How can I diagnose and fix this?
What was the prior video card?

My guess is the Display settings keeps popping up because the system thinks there has been a change (ie. a new monitor attached). At this point I have no guesses why it would think that, but that concept is the only idea I have at this time. Apparently, there is a "Show Settings" dialog box which in enabled which is why the Display settings would show.

I checked and you have the latest BIOS/UEFI (which is from 2015) so your GPU is much newer than your motherboard and I'm wondering if that may somehow be a factor in this issue.

I see the following, but unless you suspended soon after booting, they may not be related to the issue.

and when I searched on some of the terms, I found bugs related to DP ports and Xfce. Because of bug system migrations, I don't know if they are still valid. (I believe the number in brackets is time in seconds since the X Server started.)

I also found mention of Kaveri which is your onboard graphics. It is also listed as Device 1 which seems odd because I would expect you would want the dGPU to be your main GPU. Do you have any options in the BIOS/UEFI to set one GPU or the other as the primary?

After that last set of messages I posted, I see where it appears you switched to a VT and back?

There were additional repeats of the "flip queue" message and all the device removals and switches to VT.

I don't know what you did during that cycle so hard for me to correlate those messages to anything in particular related to what you are seeing (regarding the pop-ups and changes of monitor frequency).

Re: Display settings keep popping up

My previous card is onboard video. AMD Radeon R7 (Kaveri)

There is an option in BIOS to set a primary GPU, which was set automatically when I installed the video card.

I did switch VTs. I do that often. Usually, I have three user accounts logged in. One is my main account running XFCE where I do system administration, gaming, office, etc. The second is running WindowMaker where I do freebies, enter contests, do surveys, that sort of thing. The third is running AfterStep where I do web development.

Could this be an issue with the monitor? I switched the refresh rate to 144Hz and the Display settings don't pop up although the display doesn't blank, suspend or turn off. The same thing keeps happening as before but without the Display settings. The monitor doesn't blank when its supposed to. It blanks for a few seconds when it's supposed to suspend, then again when it's supposed to turn off, then it stays on. The monitor is a MSI Optix G24C.

144Hz is the listed refresh rate of the monitor. Monitors usually tend to run best at their native rates.

Your second sentence says it is blanking when it is supposed to. The problem seems to be it turns back on almost immediately. Those types of issues are often graphics driver related. The inxi information seems to indicate there is more than one DP port on your GPU. Have you tried using the other one? Sometimes the sequence of the GPU ports being powered can have odd results.

We could also check dmesg after it comes back on to see if there is anything posted which might be helpful after you try suspending.

Code: Select all

dmesg -T | tail -n 100
will give the previous 100 lines.

You suspended right after the computer turned on? I don't see a message saying the computer suspended.

Did you tell the monitor to blank? I don't see enough elapsed time for it to have blanked on its own so I'm not sure what conditions led up to this output.

Re: Display settings keep popping up

This is what I did:

I enabled display blank/suspend/off in Power Manager settings. The display was set to blank after 8 minutes of inactivity, suspend after 16, and turn off after 32 minutes. I also enabled computer suspend after 1 hour of inactivity. I then turned off the computer. Waited a few seconds and turned it back on. I now let it sit. After 8 minutes the screen blanked for a few seconds and came back on. After 32 minutes it blanked for a few seconds and came back on. After an hour the system went into suspend. After failing to come out of suspend (earlier issue I gave up on) I turned the computer completely off then back on again. After logging in to Xfce I ran dmesg and got the following output:

I don't know if it matters but there was a kernel update recently and now I have kernel version 6.5.0-26-generic x86_64.

Also, I don't know if it matters either but I'm now connected using DisplayPort. The video card's DP version is 1.4a, the monitor's is v1.2 and the cable is DP v2.1.

Finally, since switching to DP from HDMI the Display settings no longer pop up and the refresh rate stays at 144Hz.

That means it is running at v 1.2. You can't do more than the least common denominator.

The system and graphics driver are sending a signal to the monitor and the monitor is following the directions and then doing what it wants to do. Here is an open AMD bug on that issue HDMI Monitor Connected to DP Adapter wakes display from "screen off".
hex1A4 wrote: Sun Mar 24, 2024 3:47 pmI enabled display blank/suspend/off in Power Manager settings.

So you posted the normal start-up messages. What do you want us to see here?

Screen blanking is not something recorded in dmesg. All you did was post the exact same information as your first output except there is one new line at the end.

So the problem in your first post and in the title of this topic is solved, correct?
