Goodbye Windows, Hello Linux Mint
Hello Linux Mint Forum!
My name is Joe. I'm retired and residing in North Arkansas.
Within the upcoming weeks, I plan to install Linux Mint on my desktop device. The computer does not meet Windows 11 criteria and new equipment is not in my future plans. This presents an ideal opportunity to transition from Windows to Linux. And, Linux Mint is my top choice from the distros.
I'm confident I'll devote a considerable amount of time here on the forum when I get started. In advance I wat to say I greatly appreciate all the 'How To' tutorials provided.
A big THANK YOU to all the coders and developers at Linux Mint. Even though I'm on a fixed income, I'll make sure to donate whenever I can.
Here are the basics of my computer's hardware:
** HP ENVY: 750-530qd running Windows 10 Pro
Processor:
• Intel Core i5-7400 CPU @ 3.00GHz
Motherboard:
• Odense2-K
Installed RAM:
• 8.00 GB (2x4 GB) DDR4
System:
• 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Storage:
• C: 256 GB SATA3 TLC SSD (SanDisk SD8SB8U-256G-1006)
• D: 1 TB 7200 rpm HDD (Western Digital WD10EZEX-60WN4A0l)
Display:
• Intel HD Graphics 630
Sound:
• Realtek High Definition Audio
• Audio Codec: ALC3863-CG
• High Definition (Azalia) 5.1 channel audio support
CD-ROM:
• DVD Writer, hp PLDS DVDRW DU8AESH

Welcome to the forum. I made the switch about 3 years ago, do not be afraid. I am also retired, but I suck at it, still picking up work from time to time. Hopefully you will be better at it than I am.Unchart3dSandb0x wrote: ⤴Mon Feb 12, 2024 2:24 am Hello Linux Mint Forum!

Re: Goodbye Windows, Hello Linux Mint
A few things I found invaluable when I started out with Mint.
1) To put an folder shortcut on the desktop - Ctrl+Shift while you drag the folder over. (Unlike the right click and drag in windows)
2) To Lock your screen - Ctrl+Alt+L (same as Windows Key+L in windows)
When in the Terminal Window....
Shift+Ctrl+C - Copy
Shift+Ctrl+V - Paste
I create a folder in my home directory called 000_Applications (the 000_ is so it always gets sorted to the top) and I put any "appimage" or other self-contained applications in there so I know where they all are when I need to update them. You probably won't mess with that sort of stuff for a while but it's good to have some organization in place for that day when you do give those sort of app packages a try. [info about appimage... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AppImage]

Re: Goodbye Windows, Hello Linux Mint
Thank you!
As I type this I'm working on my backup discs.
I didn't realize how many files I have (or had) with punctuation characters in the file name. As you know, they will not ZIP or burn. But, luckily I have an old Windows app named ReNamer. It will go through and change or remove them. I also used it to replace spaces with underscores.
