Low disk space warning when there is plenty of space - [SOLVED]

Post by techenthudiast »

Hi,

I have Linux Mint 21.2 since last week I started to receive warning about low disk space. However all partitions have plenty of space.
I do not know where to look. Please help. Here is print out of "inxi -Fxxxrz" minus repos

OP's inxi is showing plenty of space, if anything / is too big:

Code: Select all

Partition:
  ID-1: / size: 139.75 GiB used: 34.08 GiB (24.4%) fs: ext4
    dev: /dev/nvme0n1p1
  ID-2: /boot/efi size: 548.9 MiB used: 9.3 MiB (1.7%) fs: vfat
    dev: /dev/nvme0n1p2
  ID-3: /home size: 131.65 GiB used: 14.24 GiB (10.8%) fs: ext4
    dev: /dev/nvme0n1p5
What is the exact error/warning message and do you know where it is coming from?

I did not realize that too big can be an issue.

Re>

The warning shows up on the login.
Low Disk Space on
"3b92ea25-2e45-41c8-97d3-58aa8141755e"
The volume "3b92ea25-2e45-41c8-97d3-58aa8141755e" has
only 703.6 MB disk space remaining. You may free up some
space by emptying the trash.
and today warning showed 628MB left.
Here is the problematic line as I understand:

Code: Select all

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/nvme0n1p7 433G 411G 628M 100% /mnt/3b92ea25-2e45-41c8-97d3-58aa8141755e
How Size:433 - Used: 411 = 22GB translates to 628MB available?
I emptied the Trash. (I clicked on emptying the trash before in the dialog, it seems it did not do anything) so now

Code: Select all

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/nvme0n1p7 433G 407G 4.4G 99% /mnt/3b92ea25-2e45-41c8-97d3-58aa8141755e
while better the math still does not make sense to me. It seems that system reserves part of the space on the partition without showing it.
I would love to understand where 22GB disappear or reserved for

Thank you

On linux filesystems the system reserves 5% for system use. This can be changed with tune2fs, but you are better clearing files off that partition.

Thank you for your explanation.

Not sure if I need to start a new thread on this, so I will continue here due to context.

Two questions:
1. Due to big size of the partition does the system really needs 5% = 22GB? How much system actually needs

2. This "3b92ea25-2e45-41c8-97d3-58aa8141755e" is a partition on a drive that is used for storage, my system (on the same drive as this partition) has separate home and root partitions. Does the system really needs reserved space on storage partition?

Thank you

No, but that is what it does. I reduced the reserved space down to 1% on the partition on my backup drive.
