No sound on internal speakers

Post by davidrolli »

Hi
I have sound issues an my new Lenovo Thinkbook 16p Gen4.
Problem:
This Notebook has four speakers, two hightoners and two bass speakers. There is some sound on the highspeakers, but I think, that there should be a better quality on them. The bass speakers provide no sound at all.

I searched the web, but couldn't find any good solution. I went through all the specific websites like ubuntu, ALSA and "Tips for Troubleshooting Sound Issues Rev. 1" etc.
Here some information:

Install pavucontrol, launch it and experiment a bit with its sliders.

Just for the sake of troubleshooting: download the iso of the daily build of the upcoming Ubuntu 24.04, create a bootable USB stick with it, boot from it and test.

I did try your request. Unfortunately without change to the problem. When I open the alsamixer, I have the master volume control on the left side. Then headphones and after that the speaker and the bass speaker. Speaker and bass speaker have a square with two zeros, but no bar over the square, where I can control the volume. All the other ones have a bar where I can set the volume.
This problem seems to lay deeper (e.g. the sound chip does not communicate with the amplifier or something like this...).

Try this:

Code: Select all

sudo fwupdmgr reinstall
In the "Choose a device:" dialogue, select Intel Management Engine (probably the second entry).

Reboot and test.

Based on:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1460834 ... in-sound-s

Be prepared for the following chain of events (errors etc.):

Thank you Pjotr! I did try the command sudo fwupdmgr reinstall and received following result:

Choose a device:
0. Cancel
1. e4e4798b680250783bc98f42d1fda6239ad8de3c (Unifying Receiver)
2. 35bafe4560056ef10478b809d2e97c060d1506a9 (Unifying Receiver)

I think these devices are the receivers for the wireless mouse and keyboard.

I've checked following links:

I do not understand enough of the many commands with their results in the terminal. Any other idea?

It looks like there may be something wrong with the automatic sound chipset detection of the driver. Apparently, upstream (kernel.org) has already done some work to try to fix that (the drivers are in the kernel).

Yet I can't recommend installing a vanilla Mainline kernel from upstream. Too many downsides to that. I advise to wait for the redeeming kernel update that contains a (backported?) fix. And keep making sure that the BIOS of your laptop is up to date (which it is now). Can't make any more of it, sorry....

Hopefully a sound expert will jump in, who might know some things you might still try. But my bag of tricks is empty. :(
