Cinnamon Crash! Mint Running in Fallback mode

Post by mudassir »

Hi, I got warning about "Cinnamon Crash" upon starting my machine this morning. Disabling Desklets and Applets could not help... and it goes to fallback mode. If I remember correctly, I did not attempt any sort of update or installation but Photoshop 7 using Wine. Below is System Information and .xession-errors log. Hope to find some quick fix. Thank you.

I think using Metacity as your windows manager could be a problem.

You should probably restore an older Timeshift snapshot to see if that will fix this.

Thank you for your input. I tried that... it does not work :(

But did restoring a timeshiift snapshot change the WM back to muffin? Because I also think that's a problem. Changing window managers is rarely a good idea, esp. with CInnamon.

Funny, many 'gurus' here recommend keeping the number of timeshift snapshots low but then if you do that and you do have a problem you very well may not have one that predates the probem.

If I remember correctly, I did not attempt any sort of update or installation but Photoshop 7 using Wine.
Create a new user and log in as them and see if it works.

For those mistakenly believing the OP changed their windows manager to Metacity, Metacity is the fall-back windows manager when Cinnamon crashes. It is not something the OP selected.

How old was your Timeshift snapshot? Was it from before when you tried installing Photoshop 7 using Wine?
What other changes have you made recently?
Have you been having problems with your VGA monitor? There are multiple references to its EDID not being found.
What KDE apps do you have installed?

Hoser Rob wrote: Thu Mar 07, 2024 11:12 am But did restoring a timeshiift snapshot change the WM back to muffin? Because I also think that's a problem. Changing window managers is rarely a good idea, esp. with CInnamon.
SMG is right... I did not changed window manager it happened after crash.
Hoser Rob wrote: Funny, many 'gurus' here recommend keeping the number of timeshift snapshots low but then if you do that and you do have a problem you very well may not have one that predates the probem.
That's the problem I've been facing :(

Thanks for your input SMG... but I had to do a fresh installation last night :(

Oh, I forget to mention... I installed hplip-3.23.12 for HP 1510 Printer / Scanner.. and a few image viewers in attempt to quick-view gimp xcf files (though none of the image viewer could do that)... but the machine worked well for two days after that.

The Timeshift snapshot was order than those changes.. but it failed to restore machine to last state.. hope to find something better to restore machine in case of emergency and avoid re-installing O/S with a lot of other apps and.. re-configure everything.

Timeshift will restore it back to like it was, providing you used a copy old enough to have all of the needed information.

I follow Tony's suggestions and Defaults, some think it is total overkill,
for me, it is a lifesaver, because I have had to back up a full month once when I realized my OS had been buggered up way to long for a causal restore from 'yesterday'

Yes, there is only a display port on this machine and my monitors have either hdmi or VGA port.. display is connected via VGA to DP adapter which is not recognized by LM. xrandr is what I find helpful in this case.

But I've a much bigger problem with this machine, which I believe is the cause of frequent crashes.. It does not shutdown properly and stuck to restart: Power down... I posted detail in this thread It would be really helpful if I can find some solution of this problem.

I had to port my work on this machine in emergency after my mother board of my desktop failed.. I usually don't need a high configuration machine but this one is really too old. And I am stuck with it for my running projects... maybe for two more months.

The EDID passes from the monitor through the cable to the computer. If the EDID is corrupted at the source or there is corruptions in the cables, then LM will not get it. This is not a matter of LM not "recognizing it". It is a matter of the EDID not making it to LM. That is likely either a problem with the monitor itself or the cables.

You are running from an external drive. It's really up to your hardware as to how to shutdown.

Did you check the ACPI settings in your BIOS/UEFI as the last post in that topic suggested?

No, I am running from internal SSD.
Yes, I checked ACPI setting it does not help... same result whether enabled or disabled.

From the other topic:
mudassir wrote: Fri Dec 22, 2023 8:23 amMint installation disk is 500 GB 3.5" rotating sata HDD connected to PC via USB casing.
Your inxi information for sdb also indicates it is an external storage.

I don't see in that topic where it says you re-installed and put the install on an internal SSD.

Yes, that's right.. it was an older installation. Now, LM runs from internal SSD but the problem remains same.

You did a fresh install and the problem of Cinnamon crashing is still happening?
