No Sound - Dummy Output Device

Post by pantag »

New installation of the current version of Mint and I get no sound, just a Dummy Output device.
Reading some other posts, the first task is to provide some info to help troubleshoot:

Welcome to the forum, pantag.

Did you have sound when booting to a live session of Linux Mint before you installed?
It's a bit odd your inxi output is showing software rendering mode (llmvmpipe).

Graphics:
Device-1: Intel HD Graphics 530 vendor: ASUSTeK driver: i915 v: kernel
bus-ID: 00:02.0
Display: x11 server: X.Org v: 1.21.1.4 driver: X: loaded: modesetting

OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 15.0.7 256 bits)
v: 4.5 Mesa 23.2.1-1ubuntu3.1~22.04.2 direct render: Yes

You didn't select software rendering mode from the drop-down when you booted did you?

I am not sure. I love Mint so much that I installed it right away. Just to note that this is a headless server with nothing attached to it. I am accessing it via RDP from a Macbook. And no, no software rendering mode, which i think you can select from the login screen. I have it set to the standard Cinnamon entry.

That is why it is coming up with software rendering.

I don't know if RDP affects sound capabilities, but I've helped multiple other people who have seen software rendering when RDPing in rather than accessing the computer locally.

Ok. But RDPing into it, should have nothing to do with the Dummy Device showing, right? It should still show a sound device, regardless. Yeah?

Glad to hear! Any ideas on how to address this issue?

The data you posted for seasons is showing a sound card (ALC1220) with all files appearing to be properly loaded.

Do you have a way to access the computer locally? I'm not familiar enough with RDP (which version are you using?) to know if it might be a factor in this issue.

I had the same problem on my HP laptop and solved it by switching to a newer kernel.

Yep, it is in the basement. Let me grab my portable monitor and go check. The portable monitor however, has an HDMI port and I know that this DOES work and sound plays just fine from the portable LCD little speakers. My understanding is that the motherboard embedded sound card device should show up, too.

To which version? The latest? I think it is 6.5 now? Any other issues with any other devices from the new kernel?

Solution found!
So, the outcome of the story is that if you RDPing to a headless machine, the sound card will not appear. When i plug in a monitor to the machine, the sound card shows up just fine and plays sound OK. Is this expected behavior? Maybe...since I am connecting via Windows Remote Desktop. But at least, I would expect it to show the device instead of showing Dummy Output. If someone things this outcome is not right, let me know.

I did a quick search and it seems there might be a setting in the RDP software to enable remote sound? Try the local resources tab (might be in the Advanced Settings) to the Remote audio settings?

I did check the RDP settings for my machine and I had already enabled the "Pass Sound to this PC" option, meaning play/pass any Linux Mint sounds to the Macbook.
