FTL not launching (Steam)

Post by sibarus »

I need some help with a game that won't start.

I recently installed Linux Mint (21.3 Cinnamon), along with Steam and a few games, all of which have native Linux versions. One of them (FTL) refuses to start. When I try to launch it from my Steam Library, 'last played' changes to 'LAUNCHING launching executable' for a fraction of a second before reverting back. It looks like the game attempts to launch then immediately fails.

I have cleared Steam's download cache and verified the game files. I installed Steam through the Software Manager and via a download from Steam's homepage, both with the same result. I've included my system info and the contents of FTL.log.

I'm new to Linux and I'm a bit lost. Any help would be appreciated!

Hey, Sibarus and welcome to Mint forums
I'm happy to see a newcomer posting their system info in their first post. It is a rare sight :D
That makes extremely easy to spot the causes at least for the most basic of problems.

You have installed "mainline" kernel (6.7.6-060706-generic x86_64) from cappelikan ppa.
It is an unofficial kernel and presumably unsupported by the proprietary nvidia driver as well.
So you are limited to open-source nouveau driver which is seriously lacking in proper 3D rendering capabilities.

Install a bleeding edge kernel only with bleeding edge hardware. Your hardware is more than 10-year old.
Revert to official Ubuntu kernels, remove cappelikan ppa and install nvidia driver from Driver Manager.

I have switched back to the kernel I was previously using, removed 6.7.6 and updated the Nvidia driver. Sadly the problem hasn't been resolved. Thanks for your suggestion though!

- FTL ? https://store.steampowered.com/app/2126 ... han_Light/
and updated the Nvidia driver
Which ? I seen open and colsed driver Nvidia. Which version? I seen more.

General support for Steam Games with Steam icon.
Open Steam --> Help (from menu above) --> Steam Support --> Choose game and report the problem.
SteamAPI_Init() failed.
Is this after launching the game manually without Steam?
The game does not work in both cases and is the same log?

You can use strace command to debug ( you need instal to usel )
( But run game without Steam )
Example: https://github.com/tele1/LinuxTutorial/ ... ce-command

You can check from Lutris app https://lutris.net/games/ftl-faster-than-light/
