(RESOLVED) patriot javelin S4 ext storage

Post by steve51 »

Hello,
Am I beating a dead dog here?
Briefly I was going to do something about backup storage, I had access to 4, 2TB 2.5" drives. I came across external drive Patriot Javelin at my local RecyclePC. I didn't know anything about this external storage and was not really familiar with what it would take to drive it. So it was take it or leave it.
Back home, I've now made the 4 adapter trays to mount the 2.5" drives into the plastic 3.5" Javelin slide in trays. The drives all connect as indicated by the flashing blue lights on the front of the unit but other than that there's no sign of my system 'seeing' the PJS.
Research shows that the Patriot Javelin S4 (PJS) was designed for MS or Apple systems @2012.
Websearch comes up with this seemingly best approach ... https://github.com/alexeicolin/javelin.
I don't understand whether this would work for me and frankly it's beyond my skill level.
Am I wasting my time with this and should look for another linux friendly external drive to mount my 4, 2 TB drives in?

thanks for comments and suggestions.

This appears to be a stand alone network storage type enclosure. USB also available. You will need the user manual on that. Try connecting it to your router with a network cable and then use your browser to point it to its ip address it gets from the router.

This is where the user guide will come in handy.

As for USB connections and such just to your computer you may have to flip some switches on it or whatever to configure it. Who knows.

Try the network cable and then log into your router and see if it gets an ip address. Then point your browser to it.

Good Luck.

Thanks coffee412 for the heads up.
I downloaded a copy of the PJS manual and it’s sort of helpful. Note there is no specific IP address listed anywhere on the unit. The user manual directed me to WebPASM which reiterated most of what was in the manual. I didn’t get the cd that was originally supplied with the unit which probably wouldn’t have helped since it was for Windows or Apple applications..
Hooked the PJS ethernet cable to my T-Mobile router/modem. Went into my internet provider T-mobile account to see find an IP address – nothing on the account page. However from my records I pulled up the Gateway ‘name plate’ info for my TM r/m. Looking on line at a T-Mobile community troubleshooting page it seems that all gateway r/ms IPs are 198.162.12.1 .
Here’s a link to that page discussion.... https://community.t-mobile.com/troubles ... sses-41548

It seems that TM has some unhappy customers regarding IP addresses....and for my issue coffee412 it would seem that the IP address approach is a no go??
Any suggestions for alternate 4 bay external hard drive cases to use for storage?

Thanks

Pretty much all that box is, is a small computer with some software and drives in it. So, You can take an inexpensive computer and load it up with some hard drives. Just put the computer on your local network and load linux on it. Then use something like SAMBA (if you need windows access to it) or NFS (for linux access only) to share out the storage and backup to it.

You can also grab an inexpensive external box that just does jobd (just a bunch of disks) and hook that up via USB or Network (depending on what it offers) and use that with mdadm to raid some or all the drives for redundancy. I have a "Probox" which has 4 bays in it for drives that I have hooked up to my computer via USB3. I used mdadm to setup a couple of mirrored raids in it for backing up. The box is pretty much just some generic box. Nothing special.

I did try some of the fancier external boxes with proprietary software (icy dock I think it was) but found out it was limited in that it would not backup dot files (.* , Like .thunderbird ect..) and promptly returned it.

Thanks coffe412,
Yes think going with a different external box would be best.
The recyclePC place is good to use but you really have to know what's what and you never know what they may have.
Cheers for the info.
