Horrible screen tearing in any game on Cinnamon 21.3 X11

I'm a fairly new Mint user that's been using Mint more often as my primary OS for games and applications, and one constant issue I've been struggling with is absolutely horrible screen tearing in essentially any game or application I use. At first I thought it was just a select few games, but as I installed and played more games I realized that every game I've tried to play has this awful screen tearing, as well as some non-game applications like VLC or YouTube videos in Firefox, although it seems considerably less severe in those video players than when playing a game.

I've tried essentially every solution I could find online. Enabling V-Sync or a frame limiter from the in-game settings doesn't do anything at all, and enabling the NVIDIA compositor pipeline in the X Server settings makes the screen tearing slightly better but causes games to stutter and lag massively to an almost unplayable state. This is the case for native Linux games as well as those running through Steam Play's compatibility layers, as well as non-Steam games.

I've also tried swapping kernels and video drivers, nothing seems to make a difference at all. Some things I've seen online seem to point this out as a common issue with X11-based desktop environments, but I'm a big fan of Cinnamon and am really hoping to solve this issue without having to swap to a different desktop environment.

Hi
Maybe this is a monitor problem? try connecting GPU to monitor with a different type of cable (for example DisplayPort instead of HDMI) and see if anything changes...

No DisplayPort available on this monitor, but the DVI does the same thing.

Vsync is a feature that tries to ensure your monitor is in sync with your GPU and displays every frame your GPU renders. Every monitor has a maximum amount of times per second it can put a new image (or frame) up, which is known as its refresh rate and measured in Hertz (Hz). A monitor with a 60Hz display can show up to 60 frames per second, for example; a 144Hz monitor can display up to 144 fps, etc. If you play a game that runs at 100 fps on a 60Hz monitor, you might experience screen tearing.

I've tried the compositor settings and the VBlank settings (VBlank was already on), the compositor helps slightly but causes games to stutter and lag massively when enabled, and I've already tried swapping between various drivers.

The monitor is 60hz and I have it set to 60hz, although I have tried some other refresh rates to see if they helped at all.

The SMG question have a higher priority due to his extensive graphics experience, so please first test the computer hardware together with him / her. Because some changes to the entire layout may affect the result of commands in the terminal.

[ My suggestion for later ]
I have read solved threads on this topic on this forum.

When you finish looking and don't find the cause, I wanted to suggest some things.
1. Make a video to show how yours looks like screen tearing.
2. Try use any monitoring tool to check consumption of system resources.

3. The driver does not report any errors, warnings are typical (I have them too).
You can check other system logs, but be warned that the number of messages is large.

4. You can check different configurations to see if the problem reappears or disappears.
- Check with Nvidia, but with each monitor separately.
- Check with Intel graphic card.
Here I must warn you. - This might be my bad idea.
I once noticed that changing the graphics card in an Ubuntu-based distribution turns on the error logging program.
The problem is that the system startup stops and I haven't found a way to turn it off this app. So I simply reinstalled the entire system.

5. Maybe it has nothing to do with it,
but you can check RAM and hard drive prophylactically.
Especially RAM damage may cause image distortions. Unfortunately, they do not have to be visible immediately on every system.
- I suggest test with Memtest86 and Memtest86+
Because once when I tested only one of them showed me errors. ( You can run for example from UBCD from live-USB )
- For hard drive I suggest only check log.
GSmartControl app --> " LOG " tab
should be something like
ATA Error Count: 0 (Note: The number of entries may be limited to the newest ones)
6. You can check if your system use SWAP when you have screen tearing.
This may slow down your system sometimes.

7. As a last resort, you can ask the Nvidia developer,
but I suspect they will recommend using newer hardware.

I may also suggest
- Compare your Cinnamon with other Desktop environment
- Compare your X11 with Wayland
- People call a window program that it is a composer.
I don't know what exactly they mean
but some program to measure the delay would be useful.
You can try talking with more advanced developers who design X11 and Wayland, for example.

I don't know what kernels you tested.
I may suggest trying kernel modifications or build it yourself for tests on a light graphical environment.
However, this requires a little more free time and experience because it may cause various problems with the system.
So you test at your own risk.
I mean for example "Low Latency kernel" , XanMod Kernel .

Sorry for the slow reply, been a bit busy!

The only display being used for games/videos is the LG IPS display on the NVIDIA GPU connected via HDMI. The Gateway and Acer displays are connected to the Intel graphics via DVI and VGA but aren't being used for games at all.. The Samsung display is also connected to the NVIDIA GPU via HDMI-DVI but isn't being used for anything at all in Mint, it's just there because it's used for a multimon setup in my Windows install.

I'm obviously not physically there and you are, but the data you posted isn't showing the 1920x1080 as being internally connected to the Nvidia GPU. Maybe there is a BIOS/UEFI setting which might be affecting this output?

(I ran the EDID from HDMI-1-2 through an EDID decoder to get the monitor year of manufacturer.)

I'm unsure why that output is showing that result, but the LG 1080p is 100% connected to the NVIDIA GPU (I can trace the HDMI cable). The X Server settings application also show both it and the Samsung as being connected to the 1060, while the two 1280x1024 displays connected to the Intel graphics appear as PRIME displays that it can't configure. I'll dig around in the UEFI but given both Windows and the X Server settings in Mint show it as being connected to the NVIDIA GPU I'm unsure why Xrandr would be showing it as something different.

I'm also going to try disabling the Intel graphics via the UEFI. It's only really set up in this way because I wanted to offload some of the display tasks on the 1280x1024 monitors onto the Intel graphics in Windows, but I really don't need to keep it like this.

Are you referencing the Nvidia X Server settings app? Can you provide a screenshot of what you are seeing? If the screenshot is small enough, you can attach it to a post using the Attachments tab below the reply box. Otherwise you can use an image-sharing site and share the link with us.

Screen-tearing (especially "horrible" tearing) is more common with Intel GPUs. Screen tearing does happen with Nvidia as well, but I don't recall others describing it as "horrible".

Nowadays there are a lot of different variations in how the motherboards are wired with respect to onboard and discrete GPUs so I don't have any specific suggestions for what to try. It might take a process of elimination and checking inxi -Gxxxz with different combinations of monitors attached (or only one attached) to understand specifically what is happening.

Here's a shot of what I'm seeing in the NVIDIA X Server settings app. I'll give disabling the Intel graphics via the UEFI a shot and see if not having the Intel graphics enabled makes any difference, then see what I can figure out with inxi like you mentioned if it doesn't seem to make a difference. I have a feeling that the combination of the onboard Intel and the dedicated Nvidia GPU is what's causing the issue.

After disabling the onboard Intel graphics from the UEFI settings, I don't even have a wink of screen tearing in any application. Seems to me there's something X11 doesn't like in the combination of the Intel and NVIDIA GPUs. I'll see if I can't dig out enough adapters to connect the two 1280x1024 displays directly to the 1060 and see if it's still tearing-free.

Did the xrandr --verbose output change?
What is the output of inxi -Gxxxz?
Just wondering if there is a way to diagnose the issue using the data.

In a dual-GPU system (such as a laptop with Optimus), I'm pretty sure in the Nvidia X Server settings show both GPUs and the screens for both (but it's been a while since I've seen one so I could be wrong). Your image does not show that. What happens with some of these desktops with dual GPUs is sometimes they act similar to an Optimus-style laptop, but other times they do not. It's my understanding that it depends on how the motherboard is designed as to how it shows up in Linux-based distros.
