Computer wouldnt shut down properly

Post by Heriberto »

For quite a while i could use suspend or just close the lid and the computer would awake. This is now not working anymore. Trying to shutdown shuts the computer down, but not entirely. Now i have to use the power button to switch the computer off.

This said, i have been thinking it might has to do with a kernel update. So i switched from Kernel 5.4.0-172 to 5.15.0-100. Same. Now what ? I could switch from my current Linux Mint Mate 20.2 to 21.3. At some point in time i have to do that anyway. But will that help without knowing what is the reason for the new behavior ? Some help here would be welcome.

Welcome to the forum, Heriberto.

If you think the issue might be a kernel update, then you should be testing an older kernel such as 5.4.0-170 or something older. The 5.15.0-100 kernel is newer than the 5.4.0-172 (which was recently replaced by -173).

If this is the correct link, it appears the latest BIOS/UEFI is version 1.58. Several of those updates appear to be CPU microcode updates. Maybe they will help.

Thank you for your information. So far, i tried to start with the oldest kernel available, which was 5.4.0-74. Same result, suspend wont wake and shutdown wont shutdown completely unless i push the power button. That said, i booted from an usb stick with mint 21.3 on it, same result. So i guess its not the kernel and updating to any kernel wont help.

I will now try to check if some hardware cant be shutdown properly because of a defect or something. A running system cannt stop working except there have been software updates (which seems i ruled out), or there is some hardware defective.
