Linux Mint 21.3 Repeated lockups after upgrade from 21.2

Post by yjo-jo »

Hi I had an initial post because I had a similarity to another user, but of course my hardware would not be a match (as was pointed out to me). So the result might seem similar but don't know if it is the same problem.

Based on that, I tried to gather information in a similar manner to that post, which I will add below. I have been using for a long time, but 100% since 2020. Since the recent update (21.3) I have a hard crash about every 2 days. I always leave my computer running (and always have... it does stuff for me when I'm not at home!). I mostly notice these lockups when I come back to it, in the evening or first thing in the morning. I am describing a lockup as the screen remaining black when I return to it... I do not have my computer sleep, but I do have my monitor sleep, so generally when I return, I tap the keyboard and the monitor comes to life. In these lockup cases, the screen does not. The capslock key performs no function (capslock light stays off). The motherboard has a visible diagnostic code, but according to that code, there is no error... it is the same code listed as when it is running fine. I have tried to ping the machine from a different one on my network, and there is no ping response. That's my definition of lockup in this scenario.

Even when the computer is running, I notice that the mouse regularly stutters across my screen. Then later, the mouse will be normal. I've tried to catch active processes with the System Monitor while the mouse is stuttering, but the highest ranking process is generally Cinnamon, but many things are jumping around of course.

I only have one display.

As mentioned, I tried to review other similar troubles, so here is some of the output I have captured.

My xsession-errors only seemed to have data from my "startup after the lockup" (now, before posting). So let's start with my xsession-errors.old Today is "Mar 14", and this log is all from "Mar 13" based on higher up in the file.

Doesn't look great, maybe I can get rid of that end-of-life thing, unless that is generally expected to show up. Also, I notice that "screensaver has left the bus". I don't know what that means, but maybe screensaver is a problem?

I scrubbed a few things with xxxx. There is stuff about Mate in there, but I have not used LM with Mate since 2021... then I reverted to Cinnamon ever since... do I need to purge all/any thing from Mate? My understanding was they could sort of both be present and toggle when you want, but I never use Mate anymore, so maybe I should wipe it out.

Thanks for any ideas you might have. If you are curious about the post were I got started, it is this one:

yjo-jo wrote: Thu Mar 14, 2024 9:11 pm Since the recent update (21.3) I have a hard crash about every 2 days.
Have you tried using the 6.5 kernel available in Update Manager?

From where did you obtain the Nvidia-550 driver you have installed?

That is a normal message.

Please post your complete system information. You only posted the first few sections.

Hi SMG, thank you for your help. I think we met in that other post.

If I look at Update Manager, I don't see any kernel updates available. Is there anything I have to do to get those to show up? I could provide a list of what it shows if it helps. Or I'm comfortable with apt if we have to go around Update Manager.

In that other post, I think you told the person to get the latest Nvidia driver, so before I made this post, I had tried to do that to. I went to the Nvidia site and got their "run" package, and ran it. I had prev. made a TimeShift so I was ready for failure, but it seemed as if there were no problems. To be clear, I had the problem (and found that other post) prior to the latest Nvidia, so I was hoping that was the issue for me and that is how I got the 550 version.

Can you refresh me on the complete system info? I think I got this from the command you had given the other user... it is the inxi -SMCGxxxz command. Would different flags get more details that you need? Thank you again!!

Instructions for upgrading to the 6.5 kernel:
  • Open Update Manager.
  • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
  • Make sure 6.5 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
  • Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

We do not recommend using the driver from the Nvidia website. We recommend using the driver in Driver Manager.

The Nvidia-550 driver is a beta driver. I suggest you run the Nvidia uninstall script to remove the driver you installed from the website. You will cause problems on your system if you try mixing different methods of installing Nvidia drivers. The driver methods do not work with each other and you can end up with two different drivers on your system which causes problems.

It's the same information listed in How to get help (the section in pink right above your topic title). I have copied it below:

Open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click the Copy button in the lower right and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware.

OK, thank you. I totally misunderstood from the other post... so I have uninstalled the Nvidia driver and I went to the Driver Manager. I had the options of 525, 535, and 545, however it told me that 535 was "recommended"... so I went with that one. I can go up to the 545 if you think that would be better.

I upgraded my kernel to 6.5. Thanks for pointing me to that... in never really browsed around in Update Manager and usually just take what it lists, so that was a new thing for me, thanks!

Here is the result of my system report AFTER the mods I just described above.

No other suggestions at this time.

If it does lock up, give it some time to see if it is just a resource freeze which eventually resolves itself. If you are "unfreezing" it by restarting it, then please run

Code: Select all

journalctl -b -1 | tail -n 100
after you restart the computer. That lists the last 100 lines of the previous boot cycle.

Well, that was quicker than I expected.. although it is sort of fitting the 48 hour pattern. According to the journalctl... the last thing that happened is at 18:20... I was grilling dinner so I didn't know it. When I came back, it was in lockup mode. It was 18:50 (6:50p) at that time. So I went to do something else, but then I needed to get stuff done on my computer so at 19:20 (half hour later) I checked... it was still in the same state... monitor remain black... capslock does not toggle the light... numlock does not toggle the light... I did a hard reset and then ran the journalctl command... I have some substitutes ("MyComputer", "MyUsername", "MyBashfile"). The big repeater in there are the 2 bash files that I run, but I've been running them for at least two years, so I don't know that they would all-of-a-sudden break my computer at the same time that I did the 21.3 upgrade. I don't see anything else that is jumping out. Maybe you can see something?

Are those bash files doing any type of network file access? Something which might be done every 48 hours (which seems to be when you notice the problem happening)? I ask that because of what the person in this post discovered.

My guess would be it is something related to your bash files.

I could certainly try disabling them.
. . .
// Note: update 3/20/24 - I edited this because it describes the scripts which have no impact on the issue nor help in the troubleshooting effort.
// Summary -- scripts do stuff every 5 minutes and are kicked off by a cron job.
// The scripts could trigger events for the cloud service... and from there, I hypothesized...

... Maybe their driver is out of sync with the latest update?

In the meantime, I will disable those scripts and see if the problem continues. Thanks for the new ideas!

Do they do any type of maintenance every 48 hours? Or anything that might happen differently on that (or similar) schedule? Maybe a re-login is necessary?

I don't use cloud services so I cannot offer any specific suggestions.

Not that I am aware of. I know *any* change in the directory triggers the service... in my scenario, any time I put a file in a folder-of-the-service from my phone, my computer is alerted... any time I put one in from my computer, my phone is alerted. But my lockup doesn't seem to coincide with any of those events. For now, the scripts are disabled, so it should be easy to see if the lockup continues. I saw that there were 6.5 kernel updates, so I updated and rebooted/re-logins... so now I will wait and report back in a while.

I'm back! You probably were expecting me.

I did the journalctl again. Here you'll see that my bash scripts have not been running. But I don't see anything else that is suspicious other than it seems something ran itself as sudo under my behalf... I wasn't home at the time, so that was curious to me... I didn't know that was a thing.

Also interesting... last time the failure occurred (at least according to the timestamps on journalctl) at 18:20-ish... this time at 18:00... so it's not an exact 48 hours, but it seems to be in that ballpark.

I don't really want to, but I'm starting to think I need to back up all my stuff, wipe the drive and do a fresh install... it has the feeling of one of these things is happening:
1) There is something wrong with this version 21.3, or at least, there is something with it conflicting with something on my system that never occurred before. If this is the case then a fresh-install would still result in the current lockups that I am seeing.
2) There is some carry-over (as I did an "upgrade" from 21.2) from 21.2 that isn't working properly with 21.3. I fresh install in this case should result in things running good again (unless #1 above is true).
3) Perhaps wiping the drive and doing a fresh install of 21.2 is my happiest result. Or, now that I check, it appears my timeshift still has my last 21.2, so maybe just a capture of my existing files and a rollback to 21.2 is a fast and safe plan.

What are your thoughts or ideas, SMG?

But I don't see anything else that is suspicious other than it seems something ran itself as sudo under my behalf... I wasn't home at the time, so that was curious to me... I didn't know that was a thing.
Timeshift (to check and see if it should do a snapshot) and Update Manager (to check for updates) are two apps which come to mind that might do that. From the log you posted, it appears it was Timeshift.
yjo-jo wrote: Mon Mar 18, 2024 8:49 pmAlso interesting... last time the failure occurred (at least according to the timestamps on journalctl) at 18:20-ish... this time at 18:00... so it's not an exact 48 hours, but it seems to be in that ballpark.
That is quite curious at how close the timing is.
yjo-jo wrote: Mon Mar 18, 2024 8:49 pmI don't really want to, but I'm starting to think I need to back up all my stuff, wipe the drive and do a fresh install... it has the feeling of one of these things is happening:

If it was working before the upgrade from LM21.2 to LM21.3 and you have a snapshot prior to your upgrade, I'd roll back to that snapshot as the first option. Then if that does not work, we'll know something else is happening (maybe a subsequent package update of some type that applies to all versions of LM21) may be the issue.

Once again, thank you for your tips and suggestions. Something you said made me think I should have had a #4 to my previous list:
4) Maybe there is a hardware failure that just happened to start going bad at the same time as my 21.3 upgrade. I'd think the timing here is pretty unusual, but you never know. If this is the case, then a rollback (#3) would show the problem still happening.

I think I will do #3, but probably not today... maybe by this weekend and then I can report on if the problem is gone or not.

Thanks again!

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, or missed something, but if everything was working in 21.2, why did you feel the need to upgrade to 21.3?

Both 21.2 and 21.3 are supported for the same amount of time. Both versions will go end of life at the exact same time. Upgrades complicate things which don't need complications.

If you have a timeshift, shift back to what worked and ignore the update to 21.3. If stuff is working, there is absolutely zero reason to update. The only way I would use 21.3 is if I was doing a clean install on a new system, and even then I'd think about it long and hard because 21.2 is working perfectly on my systems, now, and I trust it. I haven't upgraded from 20.2 to 21 on 2 of my machines, and won't until 20 goes EOL, either. If it works--don't fix it......

This 'upgrade' thing seems to me to be a thing for refugees from Windows. If a system is supported, and all the hardware is working, upgrading to the latest and greatest just doesn't make any sense at all. But that's me......

Unhelpful, I know, but Rant over.......

Any time you deal in absolutes, you're setting yourself up for failure. Also, you know nothing of me or what I do. I'm a software developer and I like to have my hands on the latest things... so there's a reason to update. Yes, I understand the risks. But I like to understand and see the latest things that are being worked on by people in my field.
Unhelpful, I know.......
At least you weren't entirely wrong.

Well? Did a roll-back fix it? Or did you reinstall, and if so, did that fix it? If the latter, did you clean-install 21.3?

Unfortunately, I didn't make it that far yet.... I think I need a block of uninterrupted time, and don't know if I'll see that until the weekend. On a sidenote, it has locked up once since the last lockup (above), so it makes me want to get it done soon.

I wanted to just do the roll-back idea, but as I mentioned I use Timeshift, so I lose all items that I've changed since the 21.2. I was just going to use "find" and grab a list of what's changed, pull it to the side, rollback, and then take the sideline items and put back in place... but "find" tells me 44,000 items have changed since my 21.2 snapshot   Of course, I didn't directly make all those changes, but there are enough "changed" items, that I don't know what ones are important and which ones aren't.

Decisions decisions!!!

Just to update, I'm rolled back to my 2/28 LM 21.2. So now let's see if I'm back in 2 days with any new lockup reports. If I am, then I think it is starting to look like a hardware problem, although, very odd that the timing would be that it started happening right after my 21.3 install. I guess I'll find out. If not, then I have inconclusive evidence of what the conflict was within my setup and 21.3... and I'm not likely to go back!
